    The fellow that did this twice, Sakai... Once I saw that he was a member of Unit 731, I totally could see why he did this twice... a penance. I hope he has found his peace.

      Unfortunately, this information was likely inaccurate. Sakai was famously a poor student with only incomplete trade school education (he failed to get into junior high and later in life when considering finishing his education found his report card was so negative he gave up), he wouldn't have been in Unit 731. Sakai was a low-ranking naval officer during the war, apparently he was considered fairly incompetent there too.
      He did work in a factory *before* enlisting that was part of the biological weapons supply chain, which is perhaps how the broadcasters got the idea.

    Mr. Sakai was not joining in Unit 731, this is incorrect information!!
    He was in preparatory army.
    Hence it is not a reason why he became monk.

    Hindu yogis and Chinese buddhists have walked thousands of miles exposing themselves to wild animals like tigers, leopards, and poisonous snakes. Can you imagine walking on foot from China to India via Tibet and back? If you are seeking enlightenment, you can't be afraid of pain or death.

    It's really unforgivable that they broadcasted such a vicious lie, Sakai was in the unit 731. He was a naval student pilot during the WW2. He was DEFINITELY NOT in the unit 731. There were two main reasons why he entered the priesthood, the death of his friends during war and the suicide of his wife. The disgusting story in this vid about the unit 731 is clearly malicious concotion.

    Looked at another way, it is to force you to think positively - if you listen to what Genshin says, "you must not allow yourself to think "what if"" you must think positively. Sakai says the same thing "Live every day positively" the death thing is to remind them that the Kaihogyo is all about commitment, and that you cannot back out of it.

    A doctor saves physical lives, a monk is a living example of living by a strict set of rules and exploring clearing your mind. Its a job someone needs to do and they just do it.
    Capitalist world tries to judge everything about the 'value' in terms of a physical act or technological feat, ancient cultures were more about how you lived than that.

  • @imtv
    @imtv 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    For me a Catholic pilgrim, I can see lots of sense into going to places by foot to pray and show devotion but I see no reason to suicide, I mean if you failed in something it doesn't mean that you will fail in others things...better than commit suicide will be put your self under a vote of service of those in need like help and asylum or an orphanage for free....serving others in need can be very enlightened you will save your life and someone else's too

    • @mindrolling24
      @mindrolling24 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      imtv I agree- I think this is more of a cultural Japanese thing rather than a Buddhist thing!

    • @Welther47
      @Welther47 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +imtv That is just such a modern way of thinking. Devotion to yourself and what you do is far more important when what you believe in.

    • @imtv
      @imtv 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Welther47 Why did you said that? " Devotion to yourself and what you do is far more important when what you believe in" when you serve others you are not putting yourself in front of your Christian beliefs, you are actually exercising your beliefs...what do you think?

    • @Welther47
      @Welther47 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      imtv Devotion is the important word here. Christian, Muslim, Buddhist or none = no difference. But as long as you are devoted to yourself you will make whatever you do into something special. There is no point in "serving" others if you are not devoted to the cause. If you don't devote yourself.
      I guess the modern proverb would be "live everyday like it's you last/to the fullest".
      It means being devoted to your self and what you do. Not so much either or not you should like the ones you are serving.
      I point is elusive, but try to understand... if you care to.

    • @imtv
      @imtv 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure Welther47... I think
      I got what you've just said...but putting this way people can easly fall into a nihilistic life don't you think?

There are times in life where you put it all on the line there is no going back. It may not require a knife but something else. A person who quits a good comfy job and follow a dream, sacrificing to raise a kid, quitting drugs to improve your life whatever, because you sacrifice so much that life becomes precious

  • @Fickle-Pixel
    @Fickle-Pixel 10 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    After watching this, I don't see that these monks are getting 'enlightened'. It just seems like a different way of life but just as difficult. Just in a different way. They didn't seem happy to me. But there is no way to truly know from just one 20 min video how someone truly is.

    • @walterwhite7554
      @walterwhite7554 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree. It is merely a different way. While personally I value the basic teachings of Buddhism, these side religious rituals are not better than Christian or Muslims rituals. I see the point behind it to forcibly have the mind and body endure hardship and seek inner strength to persevere, but that can be done by living an ordinary complicated life, mindfully and whole-heartedly. The part of happiness they seek here is inner awareness for a more fulfilling life, and ignores the other necessities for happiness for this one challenge.
      On checking into this I discovered the mountain is not that high, that there is a road for cars to the top and tourists go there regularly in buses. Possibly the "dangers" were slightly exaggerated for the purposes of the video. The interesting section for me was having someone live without food, water or sleep for 9 days, which to me teaches nothing, but might induce mental delusions similar to indian sweat log experiences or drug experiences. Just a different path, but not one that rings true for me to follow.

    • @obeefenn
      @obeefenn 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do agree to a certain extent on everyones comments but perhaps if we may look at it from another perspective...though the mountain is not that high and there is a road I think everyone would agree that it is certainly still quite a feat and when we look at the culture of these monks their beliefs regarding the seriousness of this is certainly much different from western culture. If they were unable to complete this type of task or enlightenment seeking journey then they would shockingly commit suicide immediately. They truly believe they gain spiritual insight through hardships and removing themselves from the carnal ways of this world. But I must agree with ***** on the fact that we gain insight and enlightenment and refinement in our everday live just living as we do. And I agree with Beach Bum on the fact that it seems just as difficult and they don't seem to reflect happiness. And perhaps we would need to experience it to truly understand and know if one truly becomes enlightened by or through this method or way of life. One thing I do believe though is that they must believe that it does bring them to enlightenment considering they are so willing to take their own lives rather than accepting defeat. Pretty interesting though...haha thank you for posting dear.

    • @walterwhite7554
      @walterwhite7554 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Obee Fenn Being so indoctrinated that they are willing to commit suicide is not Enlightenment in my view but submission to indoctrination with no useful purpose. It's little different than Muslims blowing themselves up for the sake of their misguided beliefs.
      the basic Buddhist teaching of the 8 Fold path and the Noble Truths are the basics of pointing a person to Enlightenment and these side rituals of certain sects of Buddhism is not he main path, but just a different path they invented.
      Enlightenment is not removing oneself from the reality of feelings and natural biological urges, but acknowledging the reality of them as part of being a normal human being, and through self-discipline and respect for oneself and others choosing a path of behavior that is moral and loving.
      Martyrdom happens in many religions with the victims all having sincere heartfelt beliefs that their particular god must be the real one, and science now understands that is merely neurotheology caused by the mighty "power of belief" working in vulnerable human subconscious minds. But religions do have some wisdom to teach mixed in with their stories. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. peace

  • @rweerakkody4565

    The path to Enlightenment, as the Buddha taught, is not a physical activity but a mental one.
    Enlightenment is simply uprooting the causes of suffering, ie. raga dvesha moha. The method to removing raga dvesha moha is bhavana (shallowly translated as 'meditation'). Whenever raga, dvesha, or moha arises in the mind, you have to apply their antidote:
    Raga --> Asubhanussati + Marananussati
    Dvesha --> Mettanussati + Marananussati
    Moha --> Marananussati
    Marananussati = Tilakkhana (Anicca Dukkha and Anatta)
    These valuable Pali/Magadhi words are unfortunately gravely mistranslated, thus leading to an incorrect understanding of the Dhamma (Buddha's teaching).

    The story from 13:35 to 14:00 is a big lie.
    The priest Yuusai Sakai was born in 1926.
    Therefore, he was 19 years old at the end of WW2 (1945), and the fact was a kamikaze pilot in the Navy flight school students.
    He was too young to belong to the 731 units of medical specialties.

    For awakening you need to see what is in front of you and hear what is around you. There is no effort and no suffering nessesary to acomplish that. Self torture, inflicting pain, sleep deprovation, hunger, honorable suicide come from bad karma. There are so many methods to aply, koan or sikantaza, mantra, prostrations, zazen, study of buddha's teachings, guru-yoga, tong-len, Chod etc. All these methods are only to awake mindful awareness within you. Identical to Lord Buddha's. Make yourself tea.

    I'm sorry these marathon monks happen, but these monks are lost. what is the point is to being monks. to delute but not delute, but these monks are learning to be some one, but there are no some one, because one every one are leaving this world, and what you are practice to be some one. are so wrong, your mind are created every thing, the point is you want to be some one and that is they key of your self, your circle of life. I think you are lost, but nothing else but a different live of living

      I am sorry but if you can walk 17 hours a day wearing only straw sandals like those monks, you would be able to do the marathon.

      The featured monk was one of the slowest to undertake the pilgrimage. Others do run including his teacher who did it twice. He was shown in one clip to be actually running. It is likely that many of these monks will both run and walk over the course of the seven year training.

    "Is that better than a doctor´s work..."
    Who are you to judge the value of this monk's life? As long as one has found inner peace and meaning, that's all it matters - regardless of whether or not he/she is saving a life or devoting oneself to spirituality. I also found your comments to be confusing - First you compare the monks to the Tarahumara Indians, but now you say the marathon is "useless." You seem too focused on competition and practicality to understand its meaning.
