Young Okinawans please take back your country and revive your cultural ways ! I am an American who grew up on Okinawa in the 60's and I love Okinawa more than anywhere on earth I have been, and I have traveled extensively. Not a day has gone by that I haven't thought of Okinawa and how beautiful is that island, the people, and the way of life. Its not too late to appreciate and restore this unique place. I love you, Okinawa, and miss you.....

It's beautiful there. If you are stressed, go on a long walk on a tropical beach. If that can't relax you, nothing can. I LOVE IT THERE AND MISS IT SO MUCH. The older generation saw war and famine...they know the importance of life.

You can eat sweet potato leaves too, they're like a starchy spinach. If you live in a climate where they can grow, sweet potatoes are a good thing to grow.

The oldest Japanese person on record is 116 year old Tane Ikai who died back in 1995. I find Japanese culture quite fascinating and their longevity is just amazing. Also Kama Chinen 114, Hide Ohira 114, Yone Minagawa 114, Ura Koyama 114, Tase Matsunaga 114, Yukichi Chuganji 114, Mitoyo Kawate 114.

I always saw these older people out and about, working and fishing, and drinking when I was stationed in Okinawa, but I never gave much thought to their health and lifestyle. This was a very interesting story. I think anyone thinking of living a healthier life should watch it.

Thanks for sharing the video. I'm originally from Shuri, Okinawa. After watching this video I'm really proud of myself as an Okinawan. I've been living in a foreign country at the moment, but someday I'll go back to my hometown. Although we have a lot of difficulties between American people and Okinawan people, I personally think it's not that bad things. At the end of Wold War two, my maternal grandmother, my mom and uncle were saved by American soldiers. There are some good episodes, too.

what I like is they physically work even at their old age. In the Philippines those who retired will mostly have a life seating to "enjoy" their benefits and then they suddenly have sickness, usually cardiovascular illness. If they will not die immediately, they become bedridden or paralyze and a burden to the family. These Okinawan old folks will just die naturally of old age and they seem not a burden to their family because they are still strong and can move freely. What is bad is when they are already very much doddering that they needed constant assistance. Those old men and women practicing Okinawan Ti or Karate are very amusing, they must be very fit and healthy. How I wish the Philippines have that culture

I just came back from my trip to Okinawa, and I just fell in love with their culture and way of life. In the south part of the island, it's all cities and American influence. But up north is more country side, and I love their food, not only healthy, but it tastes so good. I would love to live there, seems like the kinda of place I like to grow old, but still have a great quality of life. Also, I just love the ocean there.

Do people from Northern Ireland consider themselves British or Irish? Do Sicilians consider themselves Italians, Texans consider themselves Americans, or Scottish consider themselves British? IDK, some of them might and others might not, but I would imagine they all have a special pride in the land they were born and raised in, especially Okinawans.

There are many kinds of the fast food in Okinawa. they have much fast food that is not like American fast food but Okinawa or Japanese traditional fast food that is, I think, healthier than American frozen fast food shops. I think the problem in young people is not in the reason of American fast food but they eat food too much or they eat American fast food chronically.

I would put it down to 3 factors. Lots of physical activity. Diet rich in vegetables and seafood, and thirdly, the old are esteemed. In the US the old are held in contempt. It's very strange to me, having grown up in Hawaii. As an example, I was in a Fry's electronics and and old Chinese guy barged in front of me. I chewed him out, "We wait in line in this country" etc. but it turns out, he'd been allowed by the cashier to go get something and come back, and it was his turn to chew me out. He did so, jabbing me with a very hard finger. And I just took it, hell he could have thrown punched and I'd just have covered up, it would never occur to me in a million years to hit an older person, I'd lie down on the floor first.

I think the point of this video was to show how the quality of life is so much better in Okinawa. Benchmarks include lower stress, higher levels of health, longer lifespans, deeper connectedness with others. I don't know how to define quality of life beyond that. Things like better medical care dont mean as much if you've never had the need to go to a hospital. Having better tech does not compare to nature or a sense of peace. I would definitely eat both burgers and the stew.

So what if we have McDonalds? That's American culture, in Europe, just because we have them too doesn't mean it's part of our culture! Concerts have been around in Europe for centuries. And as for computers and the internet, they're both British inventions, are you trying to say they're American!? Look up Tim Berners-Lee, and Colossus, you obviously need an education.
Anyway, how is a computer western culture? It's a global service!

R&B, and hip hop are recognised as American culture in the UK, we don't think it's native. Whereas rock was a joint UK/America thing, you started it with Elvis, we perfected it with the Beatles, same as dance, Europe perfected it.
Christmas started in England, it was the Pagan new year, and then the Romans made up Christ's birthday on the day to try and get us to convert (and it worked). Notice the 25th of December is not written in the bible ;-).

I don't understand. The Okinawans near the US base expressed their own desire to eat in the fast food restaurants. If they did not what to eat there they could simply eat elsewhere and the restaurant would lose business. It looks like the youth are accepting the American culture. I do not think it is any mystery to them ,or anyone, that greasy American fast food is far less healthy than traditional Okinawan foods.

Actually fast food is pretty much completely an American franchise. I can't name a single European fast food place. Most our present culture comes from Europe, not America, but American culture is the most harmful (Fast food, gangs, appearance obsession, et cetera).
Western culture in my view means sports (origin - Europe), western architecture (origin - Europe), western music (namely rock - British/American origin), and all the stuff that happened during the renaissance.

But unfortunately, those claims have not been proved accurate, whereas those of Okinawa have (Caucasus birth records are extremely unreliable or lacking, much of it is hearsay, whereas in Okinawa the records are meticulous). There are other places with good records, such as Sardinia and elsewhere.

@Rao665 By part, I mean they are now fucking part of people. The basque would surely identify as spanish.
Okinawans are genetically same as japanese. As for Basque genetics, there at least part similar. The difference between cantonese and mandarin can be compared to french and spanish. The original people of guangdong belong to Namyue ( nam - viet A.K.A vietnam). Cantonese means Yue chinese, not han chinese. They are now assimilated due to intermarriages, but still retained the name.

shame health is being traded for globalization's culture of hedonism & death. my uncle works at the university hospital in okinawa and confirmed more people are suffering from "lifestyle" diseases (aka, western modernization). particularly, extreme individualism that contrasts from the okinawan medicine of community sharing (yuimaaru). colonization continues through commercial culture like a cancer, from the community to self-absorption and alienation.USA culture is represented by its militarism
