- A film by Eilona Ariel & Ayelet Menahemi
This is the story of an ancient meditation technique named Vipassana, which shows people how to take control of their lives and channel them toward their own good.It is the story of a strong woman named Kiran Bedi, the former Inspector General of Prisons in New Delhi, who strove to transform the notorious Tihar Prison and turn it into an oasis of peace. But most of all it is the story of prison inmates who underwent profound change, and who realized that incarceration is not the end but possibly a fresh start toward an improved and more positive life.
Winner of the Golden Spire Award at the 1998 San Francisco International Film Festival

Amazing film. Should be shown in schools as well as prisons. As the film states in the beginning "We are all prisoners, undergoing a life sentence, imprisoned by our own minds, we are all seeking parole, being hostages of our anger, fear, desire, etc.".....This film is deeply moving and can be life changing.
Agree
... unless we train our mind :)
Best lines ever read on internet.
The time spent and wasted on internet per say got a meaning today
(ˌ)pər-ˈsē : by, of, or in itself or oneself or themselves : as such : intrinsically. per se.
Maybe the slave system, The Matrix, we are in, made us like that!!!!
I do think so!!! Gouvernments create war, disaster, hunger...
This is really touching. I shed tears when the prisoners are able to look within and transform themselves. Many of us are no different from them as we are prisoners of our sufferings too.
Awesome , I wish it was in our prison system here in Australia . I have recently completed a 10 day & then a 3day course and in a few weeks doing another 10day course and I would say my life has completely changed for the better in so many ways . Thank you Vipassana....you have given me a new life .....
Hey Stephen, how are you brother?. I met you only 2 days ago at the Pomona centre, and here you are….awesome. I will friend request you on FB. Metta
Stephen Bobin You do www.prison.dhamma.org or call (02) 6685 6198 for NSW, QLD & VIC or (08) 9388 9151 for SA & WA
Stephen Bobin Great !!!
You have done great, one course and another, if it isn't in Australia it should be started.
It has been six years since you posted your comment - out of curiosity; are you still feeling the impact of Vipassana and/or still practicing? Stay blessed Dhamma brother.
My first Vipassana course in 1972 changed my life. I'm sure I'd have been dead many years ago without it, instead of leading a more harmonious and productive life which has included since 1973 giving voluntary service to help others gain the benefits of the technique, while also being an economic policy adviser to Australian Prime Ministers and state Premiers, as well as raising a family. In respect of prisons, my direct experience is only one night on remand in Brixton, but I know that repeat offenders have entrenched anti-social habit patterns, harmful for them and harmful for society; as we all do, to a lesser extent. Vipassana is the only thing I know which can change these habit patterns. And the film is excellent.
Thank you for your beautiful words. :) I am going to take my first course next month and your experience inspires and encourages me
thank you for sharing your experience sir
update: I am a vipassana meditator today and huge changes are happening in me and in my life.
It is a truly amazing technique of improving one's life and express one's potential.
It could definitely lead to a better world.
Be happy everyone :)
Great news, be happy!
Maybe, perhaps when you were young, you had the Rose Apple Tree experience Buddha described. It happened to me a few times and became a touchstone in my practice.
I did my Vipassana in 2013 in Hyderabad. My wife and I did it together while living separately in the Ashram premise. It was a ver wonderful experience. You will live as if you are alone. Very tough, but very very fruitful. It changed my life.
Vipassana is deceivingly revolutionary. It should be taught in more places.
You have that right, they don't even believe in rehabilitation here in Texas.
Yes it should! It should be a fundamental practice that's culturally integrated. It helps us calibrate our attention to the totality of our fundamental reality
@@raquelcastellano7075 America prisons in general don't believe in rehabilitation but just lock them up and throw the key
A beautiful film, I saw it at the end of 10 day Vipasanna course and I could not hold my tears. Such a powerful message and feelings in the video. A jailer hugging the prisoner and giving them touch of humanity and saying it's ok come out of your misery now we are all one. Never seen so much love and compassion between jailer and prisoner. Am so lucky to have done this course and experience
Sadhu, Sadhu, Sadhu. Beautiful movie, so emotional ending to see many people become released.
I completed two 10 days Vipassana meditation course that change..My Life...And way of thinking...Now feel peace of mind... Everyone should do ...This course.....
Thank you people for making this amazing documentary film.
A nice way to spread the message........
The highest blessing they received staying inside the prison, which many do not receive staying outside the prison!
So moving....Kudos to Kiran Bedi!!!. You are an extraordinary woman. And kudos to all the prisoners, wardens and everybody involved in the project. This documentary inspired me to enroll in a 10 day course. Thank you again.
I have completed a course as well over New Years 18/19 in Triebel, Germany. It was the best and most valuable experience of my life, though also one of the hardest. I would and am recommending it to everyone!
The movie in itself is like meditation, the music the way people are saying things, the sound of breath everything gets me into meditation, thank you for making it and leaving such a gem for the world to enjoy it.
"You are the percentage." This is a course that should be mandatory all over N. America, specifically. Thanks for making this available here on TH-cam. Awesome!
should be mandatory for the world.
Amen, Super Truthful!
It wouldn't work if it was mandatory, that's missing the point of it. It should be facilitated, incentives given and people will want to take it
Kiran bedi , you are a wonderful women ❤
An eye-opening documentary...was in tears !
ek number documentary(i cried cried cried)loved the film

Amazing👌thank you very much Goenka because really, Vipassana change the world. Every person in the universe...do a Vipassana and feel the change. Thanks Thanks Thanks Dhamma
I love this. This film is so good! Thank you Kiran Bedi for treating the inmates as human beings just like us. Thank you for giving them a chance to enter the door of peace for themselves and others. You genuinely care for the prisoners to reform themselves in an effective way. May all prisoners in the world find happiness❤️
A month ago I did one month in state 1 prison. I practiced meditating for a year prior to that. When I got to jail first I was locked down in a cell 23 hours and 50 minutes, only let out 10 minutes a day. Mentally it was tough from being free and running and doing what ever I want to, to being locked in a cell, surrounded by so much negative energy and being controlled and freedom completely gone. My only way out was to meditate, I did it multiple times a day which only thing that brought me peace. The power of imagination is extremely powerful. If you use it wisely it can work in your favour, but if you dont put it to good use it will eat you alive. It taught me to be self conscious and always be thankful for the little things. This universe we live in is amazing, perspective is vital in today's world. Love and peace to all, meditate daily. Remember we grow under pressure only, just the way a diamond is made.
Being locked for the entire day for a month is mentally torturing.
I can only imagine the trauma you would have went through.
I watched it after watching Kiran bedi on Ted.
I m thankful to her.
Thankful to meditation.
N really really surprised after seeing a lot of different comments from different countries...
This is really amazing.
That police woman is an amazing lady 😢 well done!

The meditation technique is incredible itself and how it’s changing the prisoners lives.

A must see to understand the true power of "seeing clearly through!
I love the story of the Afghan looking gentelman:
He seeked a religion of tolerance, it had bugged him to find a belief system of inclusion and he found it in vipassana.
Beautiful documentary, and very relevant of insights into the human psyche. Thank you.
Vipassana changed my life for good. More compassionate and more peaceful towards every being I encounter now.
Sadhu, sadhu, sadhu.
Thank you for making this available. It reinforces my own first experience with Vipassana that I have just finished 2 days ago. I have much to look forward to and will attend many more 10 day (or longer) courses. :-)

Namo Buddha .. Sadu..Sadu..Sadu..
Best solution for mental health problems..🇱🇰🇱🇰
Luvanon, if you really feel like going, just go. The benefits will outweigh this minor inconvenience (of giving up coffee). It depends on what your motivation is for wanting to do the course. If you have the time, just go. I also gave generously based on my experience with other courses and how much more i benefited from this course than anything I had done. Plus I liked the non-commercial and sincere approach.
AMAZING! May this Vipassana Programme spread throughout the World!
Just finished my 10 day course of Vipassana mediation
I feel so fortunate to have such wonderful time
Beautiful does the life become from such a God sent course! I can attest to the fruits of wisdom these men gain for I have sat 3 courses in the past and have seen the transformation in the souls of men before my very eyes! by the way It would be a blessing if someone could add spanish subtitles or post a spanish subtitled version so my family could see this deeply inspirational and humbling film!
coming here from Youval Noah Harari explanations of Vipassana. This is amazing i love this woman
Great video 👌🏼
I have done one of these courses, not in prison but my mind certainly felt like it was at the time, it was the hardest but most rewarding thing i have ever done in my life, seeing this video has reminded me to do it again, and keep the practise going on at home, because it is so easy to fall back into old habits ( which I have done 🤦🏼♂️) but I will try again.
I certainly advise you to do it if you haven’t already, I went to the one in Hereford UK.
No distractions, i.e. no phone, no pen & paper, no radio, no books, no TV, no talking etc… far from easy, and not everyone who started the course actually finished it, you need to do exactly as you are told by your teacher and follow what Goenka says on the videos, have no expectations, just try your best to remain in the moment.
Such beautiful film! We are all prisoners of this world and we should see it!
The way to open the conscience, la voie pour permettre d'ouvrir la conscience.
Un chemin à suivre pour aider l'évolution humaine. Bravo pour ce magnifique reportage

looking into yourself has the power of release, liberation and total freedom irrespective one's religion, nationality, color .... if you look deep you will find early Rishis of India, Buddha, Jesus of Nazareth all said to look into yourself...but we looked outside .. those brothers inside the prison are more liberated than us on the outside!

I sense Thankfulness inside my body after watching this
"May all beings be happy,be paceful,be liberated"
Meditation can truly change a person.
🙏🙏🙏
I cried many times while watching this video
This was such a good film, I always thought prisons in India were bad and this cleared up any misconceptions and worries I have about prisons. I could really use Vipassana Meditation to also deal with my reactions and how my habits are affecting society as a whole as well!
I'm watching this for maybe the 6th time right now. What an amazing movie
Beautiful, inspiring, moving, and hopeful.
I wish the world could see this and understand how we can "be the change we want to see" Gandhi.
Thank you to everyone involved in the making of this, along with Kiran Bedi's strength and courage for making this incredible work happen!
Absolutely amazing! Thank you uploader.
Very metaforic film. Sometimes we all experience a prison-like life but Vipassana can help us to find freedom.
Excellent program. On February 08, 2011 NPR reported about the partnership between the Buddhist organization and the Alabama state prison system, USA, where the inmates who were/are serving life sentence in prison choose to attend the course in the Vippasana meditation. That case showed that majority of inmates, participants in that program, transformed their lives for a better cause. This program exemplifies the same.
Matur nuwun filmnya luar biasa. Barokallah
excellent editing . marvels capturing of emotions and beautiful narration really am moved.
