  • I paint the forward bilge using TotalBoat TotalBilge epoxy-based protective bilge paint. And a few manatees stop by the boat in the marina. Progress continues on my Hunter 54 Moxie!

    I had one of the greatest teachers/ soccer coach, Mr. R. He loved moxie. Fist time I've seen a bottle in almost 40 years.

      Cool! Difficult to find here in Florida, so I buy it whenever I come across it.

      Thanks for watching! Refitting a boat like this is like eating an elephant. The only way to do it is one bite at a time.

      That bilge paint looks great even now - several weeks after the final coat. Too bad all my (soon-to-be-beautiful) bilge areas will be covered by flooring soon.

    Its coming along, slowly but surely......what's going on with your other boat in purgatory?

    • @SailingMoxie
      @SailingMoxie  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I sold that boat a little over a year ago. I'm putting a video together now about the fact that I got rid of it and some of the lesson I learned from that experience. Should be the next video I put out. It was a really cool boat, but I just couldn't deal with it in Hawaii while I was working overseas.

    Oh man you found some Moxie cola! Good job! I guess its distribution isn't that good in Florida.The bilge looks tons better, but is there cracking in the glassed in cabinetry above the floor? I didn't get a good look, but there seems to be a large crack?

    • @SailingMoxie
      @SailingMoxie  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was at an ice cream shop with my family a few weeks ago and saw the Moxie in the fridge. I took home six bottles! Yes, where the glassed in cabinetry comes down to the floor, it has separated in a few places. The hull even deeper is perfectly fine, but I'll grind out some of that cracking fiberglass and seal everything back up. It looks to only be at the very bottom - hopefully not too deep. I'll discover just how bad it is as I start digging in.

      @@SailingMoxie Hunter sailboats are sometimes looked down on for extreme hull flex. That cracked area may be the result of some kind of hull flex. That location may need a stringer to prevent hull flex. A friend of mine had a 37 with the same problem. The stringer solved it after it kept coming back multiple times.

    • @SailingMoxie
      @SailingMoxie  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Allyn. Good advice. I'll dig in and see if a small stringer can solve the problem in that area, as opposed to just filling it in with fiberglass and epoxy.

      @@SailingMoxie It may not need one, you can try just the fix first, but it seems to be a pretty large area without a great deal of support. I wouldn't create a lot of extra work if you don't need to do so. It can be just something that happens over twenty years. I would work harder on the finding more Moxie cola.

    • @SailingMoxie
      @SailingMoxie  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I may get a professional on board to check that area and a few other areas of the boat and give me a recommendation on how to proceed with some of my work. Not the person who would actually perform the work. I'll just pay someone locally for their recommendations so I get unbiased professional advice.

    What is the headroom I can't seem to find any info on Hunter about this...

    • @SailingMoxie
      @SailingMoxie  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The max headroom I’ve measured in the saloon area from sole to highest point inside is 6’2”. I’m about 6’3” so I can just barely stand straight up there. Everywhere else I have to slouch or bend over and constantly bump my head. In redoing the flooring right now I’m trying to drop the sole about 3/4” to reduce slouching and bumping my head. The forward berth area is much much shorter. Hope that helps!

    Moxie soda !! That is a Maine (state) brand. Where did you get it down in Fla.?

    • @SailingMoxie
      @SailingMoxie  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to be able to buy it at any of the local Publix grocery stores around me, but they stopped carrying it a few months ago. Now I've found it at several local ice cream shops in or around Tampa. I buy a few bottles anytime I can find it. I wish it were more widely available down here!

    2:26 - there seems to me a significant crack in the upper right half of the video - is that delamination of a structural member?

    • @SailingMoxie
      @SailingMoxie  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the inside of a storage area in the V-berth with the front panel ripped off. The delamination is only along the bottom edge as it meets the frame of the boat. It is not a structural part of the hull. That's deeper underneath. I'm going to start digging/grinding into that bottom edge to see if the damage goes deep. I think it's only at the very bottom edge. I'll then rebuild that area up where it meets the frame as needed. I don't think it's major delamination, but rather the weak edge has flexed and broken away over the last 37 years.

    120 grit is fine for a bilge !

    • @SailingMoxie
      @SailingMoxie  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I learned very quickly that I didn't need to use 220 grit sandpaper. I ended up using mostly 60 and 120 by hand on that bare woven fiberglass before the first coat and then 120 on the orbital sander for the flat surfaces. While prepping for the second coat I used the Scotch-Brite pad and 120/220 by hand just to scuff it up. I'll save that 220 for much more detailed work. Thanks for watching the videos!
