  • Who wants to use regular paint in their boat bilge? I want something hard and durable for my bilge. This episode I discuss five tips for applying Total Boat Epoxy Bilge Paint, and I give my overall impression of this interesting product.
Welcome to my boat building channel! This is my trawler restoration of an Albin 27 pocket trawler. Every couple of weeks I post a boat building or boat repair video to document various boat projects, sailboat restorations, or boat repairs.

Thank you for the shout-out. I’m not a boat restorer but did vintage European motorcycles for a long time so I understand your passion and total dedication to the project. Your efforts sparked my interest to share a mini-Albin 27 to keep the motivation flowing.

My experience using this product is mixed: I love what it promises to be and the final outcome looks awesome, but it's the most deadly paint I'll ever encounter and it's not real user friendly for the average dummy like me. Just getting it to look right in the end was challenging. I tried sanding my first coat after 24 hours and it was still tacky. I eventually did 3 coats waiting 7 days between each to sand and reapply. Each application left a texture behind from whatever brush I used, and the shit gets so sticky after 20 minutes it'll start pulling nap and hairs out of your tools. I was hoping for a glossy finish without any brush strokes or texture, but thinning it did nothing. I eventually settled on spraying and the texture came out similar to bedliner, not bad actually but not what I was planning/hoping. And DO NOT spray! That was a mistake, that stuff is like silver paint - goes everywhere and you'll poke a hole in the ozone real quick.

Ryan I appreciate your comments. I also feel this product is not all its promised to be, and I find it challenging for the novice user for many of the reasons you stated. Welcome aboard! Be sure to subscribe. Please help spread the word about MotorCity Boat Werks

About time you posted another video Devildog lol. Hey, on your bilgecoat issues, I use Interlux epoxy prime coat, because I get a discount at Worst Marine. But EVERY 2 part paint will have very strong voc's. The epoxy polymide paint I used on Hueys and Cobras at Pendleton was so bad, we couldn't paint larger areas with anyone in the hangar. And those spots that krinkled up on you, were they possibly low spots in the glass, maybe excess paint got pooled up in them which took longer to fully dry? My boat was a greasy disaster, so after pressure washing, then grinding the glass down, i faired it smooth with polyester fairing compound, then 2 coats of epoxy prime coat, then another 2 coats of regular 1 part bilge coat. Another great video though!

Thanks Danny -it was not a low spot, or a run, or any extra material. That’s what’s so weird about it. Only had this issue with the gray not the white, but the white did sit and dry weeks longer. Clearly it’s an issue with full drying time. Seems like a common complaint in the internet for this product. Keep going my friend! And send me some pics of your project when you get a chance. Stay Motivated!

I have found all Totalboat paints need to be put on extremely thin. I usually let the bilge paint sit a week between coats.

Right. This was part of the instructions I applied it, no runs no pooling, not to thick. Seems like a finicky inconsistent product.

I am wondering what engine you have in the Albin? Is it a Lehman Peugeot perhaps?

Welcome Aboard Ken😀 The original engine in my boat was the Nissan Ld28 which has been removed and is long gone. The new engine will be a Beta Marine 😎

@@motorcityboatwerks Glad to find your channel. Thanks for the reply. A heard that the Albin had the Lehmans in them. I have one in my sailboat and finding parts are like looking for hens teeth. So I was hoping you might have one as well. Enjoying your real world approach to a professional refit.

These old engines and the lack of parts availability is what necessitates a repower. 😁 I wish I had a solution for you
