- Time is against me so I have to get another coat of paint in the bilge before the Vetus goes back in later this week. I also scrape the bottom of the boat

Love THe New Series and i am in middle off watching all Your Videos I am On Episode 178 Keep up the Great Work Many thanks again
I have got to hand it to you, James. You don’t shirk the hard work. I know you receive a great deal of satisfaction from the results. Your goal is to provide a larger space for your family, and that keeps you going. The kids must be so excited to get on board.
Hi James having spend 14 years a a paint inspector I've learnt 1 thing you can spend a fortune on top paints,,,,,but preparation and priming are the most important thing, well done great job
What a shiny gleaming new engine bay , you certainly are tackling this new boat restoration all guns blazing I'd imagine when this boat restoration is completed you'll have to change your channel name to the narrow boats that James built 😂😂
The transformation of the engine bay is amazing and a credit to your hard work and determination to move forward with this project mate. The amount of work you have already done is showing us what you can achieve with determination. We are watching a caterpillar slowly transforming in to a beautiful butterfly, something that you & your family can be happy in and proud of. Well done mate, onwards and upwards :) stay safe.
Just watching you scrape the bottom of the boat made my back start hurting. I hope you will be able to stand in the morning.
I really do wish you would give it a rest! I’m absolutely knackered and I’m just watching your Stirling efforts. You’re clearly a man with drive and stamina and watching you crack on every day is immense. Sadly I have nothing to add with regards advice or suggestions as I am incredibly inept but I really do wish you well as you’re doing a fantastic job and you must be very proud😀
Wow. Just wow, James. Fantastic job.
Hi James, I'm an old git that hasn't got a narrowboat yet, so when I do I'll do the base plate like yourself, but only if the scouts still do a bob a job week, I'm sure that they'd love hitting the boat with hammers and it'll save my rheumatism, bad and especially my bl/.'@y knees.
At a shilling each that'll only be four bob!?!
Keep up your BRILL vids coming.
You are, without a doubt, a real trooper! The amount of work that you accomplish daily is mind boggling. Wish you had a crew to help you. The engine bay looks great. Was going to ask about the Weed Hatch, but you beat me to it 😃. Great work James! 😊🤗 Kathy
Excellent end result but rather surprised that the engine mounts and the weed hatch frame never got any red oxide.
Well, James, it's very satisfying watching the fast forwarded/time lapse of each of these tasks. However, I can only imagine how fatiguing it is actually do each job. Good on you. I feel proud of you, as if I had any reason to do so. Do get some rest, eat well and stay hydrated. Leigh
Glad you like the time lapse - bilge and under the boat isn’t exactly ideal for videos
Loving this, many thanks James. Take care.
The bilge is so bright, I gotta wear shades. 😎
Said no one, ever.
Nice work, James.
Cheers bud - I’m pretty happy with it - nice to see hard work pay off
James you must be buzzing each job you complete on the boat. Your Family must be so proud of you and the children will be delighted for the extra space. Great work done so far. 😃
James, you are great letting us be part. !!😊
Thanks and thanks for watching and being part of it
I know it's just undercoat, but the red primer really did look spiffy James! The grey is clean and bright though--and it will look very smart with the yellow engine.
Yeah I reckon the yellow will look against it. A nice bright floor will show things up easily if I drop them whilst I’m doing v frequent filter changes 😂
Oh that really did look like the worst job, scraping the bottom of the barrel (boat). The bilge looks much better, it is unrecognisable from the water trap it was before. Very well done so far. Best wishes Christine x
What a ghastly job - your arms must be wrecked! I can only imagine that using a power tool to finish it off will be even worse! More dust, heavier, and even less convenient to hold. Worth it in the end though when it’s all blacked and looking great. You’re doing brilliantly James.
@@mishkawp8200yeah I’m not looking forward to tomorrows jobs
By the way, Dusty's voice is mesmerizing. I'd listen to him read the phone book. Leigh
ya dont muck about do ya lad..
do well.. enjoying the process 👍
I can`t believe how much you have done already James. Can`t imagine its very nice working underneath it like that, but think of the muscles you`re gonna have. Keep it up bud.
You must be exhausted James! Brilliant job . Well done. Keep up the excellent work, it will definitely be worth it in the long run.
Keep safe and well. 😊
Amazing progress in such a short time, that engine bay looks as good as new 😊👍
I’m happy with how it’s looking now - another coat or two and it’s done
keep going james your working so hard at this but you know it will be worth it in the end
Great job James, it’s great watching you transform the boat.. you seem to have more confidence now, having done sloe patrol keep up good work. 😊
Great work in the engine bay, keep trudging along on the hull there and good luck with the engine reinstall. ;-)
Great job James, lot of graft there...well done mate..👍👍
Thanks Kevin - for everything 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
There’s nothing like a good bottom scraping ! What a task you have ahead of you ! If any one can do it you can ! Enjoy your coffee James . X ps don’t exhaust yourself x regards mandy jayne coleman !
MJC - I’m spending tomorrow grinding a bottom
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt I believe I’ve seen you do that before !? Lol remember you need protection x
You are doing a great job James, looking forward to seeing the engine bay with the lister back in it and running
Vetus ❤
Great admiration for your tenacity and hard work James. Chris in Devon.
Wonderful to see such progress. The engine bay looks really smart, you have to feel good about that. Everything you do is in keeping with your desire to respect the quality of the boat . This well done effort will end up looking great next to Serafina. Can't wait to seeyou take this to london. Keep upthe great work and take care of youself. Brian
Hey Brian
Thanks mate - I’m hoping she’ll look pretty good after the blacking too
Engine bay looks great obviously time is pretty tight so good luck
Thought about your head again. However it usually only take one time to remember objects. Maybe to late but could you find a flat cart you could lay on while under the boat.
Not too late at all. I’ve got lots to do under that boat and now it’s raining for next however long it’s a good time
Thanks 👍
👍
James, Have you ever considered scraping the rust with a multi tool blade laying flat on the surface of the hull. Maybe even a used blade with fine teeth. (Just a thought) James, Great job your doing !!! Bruce, from the land of single digit humidity
I might use it on some bits to take off the chipped blacking
You're doing a fine job mate, well done. So it looks as if you'll be fitting the interior out on the water, hmm.
Yeah it does appear that way - only really dawned on me yesterday
These vlogs are great 👍 I have to ask though .. why aren’t you changing the engine mounts?
Surly this would the time to do it and in that case remove the old ones for ease of painting
Good to see the supporters list growing, Auto mechanics here lie on their backs on a flat wooden pallet on wheels that rolls easily in all directions. No such thing in the boatyard apparently.
There is a big board under the boat which may help
Am I the only one who thinks red oxide is a good colour? I'd be perfectly happy to have a boat that colour.
Will you finish this renovation or will be the same as Sloe Patrol and never quite be finished
Im booked in a dry dock for blacking later this year but when the water is pumped out the boat sits on supports which give about 12 inches clearance making base plate blacking impossible
That’s similar to what I had with sloe patrol. Well annoying - hopefully you can carry out some inspection
UK terminology question - what's the difference between a tip and a skip? (Pretty sure it's just a "dumpster" in the US)
A skip, like the one James has, is basically a large bin where you throw rubbish (US - garbage). A tip is a council run facility where all the rubbish/garbage is taken for recycling or disposal.
@@richardpos1 Ah, ok. A dumpster and a dump, lol.
👍👌❤️🇨🇦
2 words - needle gun
Pans underneath the engine and drive shaft?
Yeah I’m looking for the right sized one now
Why red lead and not zinc oxide?
It was zinc oxide - just coloured red
That determined look ah ah ah
sand blast it m8 easy
With all your gained knowledge, I wonder if you could start a new career buying and flipping project boats :)
Flipping boats - mmmm it would be fun
Excellent progress, engine bay looking great. Looking forward to seeing it all come together !
Me too - can’t wait to see the vetus back in
Hi James, are you planning to paint the outside of the boat at some point?
Yeah but not yet
My boat is 54ft and I was able to paint one side of my boat in 10 minutes with a mirror finish 😮 If you are at Crick on the Saturday I will look out for you and fill you in on how to do it 👍
@@BOATSANDCARS wow ok I’d like to understand how that’s possible without a large dip tank
Trust me it will blow you away! I wish I could post pics on here so you can see the quality of the finish on my boat
@@BOATSANDCARS mate please email me

I’ll also be delighted to meet you at crick
90% of narrowboats have un blacked baseplate, no point in doing it really, soon as you are back in the water most of your blacking will be scraped off by the bottom of the cut. 11:26
The advice these days is to 100% black the underneath if possible. When sloe patrol came out the water a year ago most of the blacking on the baseplate was in good shape. There is a massive point in doing it
Maybe it's an old boater thing,
My baseplate is unblacked and when it came out of the water last year , apart from some wildlife growing on it, it was pretty much rust free.
No harm in doing it but will be interesting to see how much is still on when it comes out again.
Don't forget, Sloe patrol has a v shaped base plate, so won't scrape the bottom as much.
@@rickykent4543 yeah the vegetation growth hides a lot - sloe patrol has bushes growing from her at the moment it seems. I think so cuts are quite shallow and therefore you’re right - some will be scraped off. The GU is quite deep in most parts if people use the locks correctly so I haven’t scraped the bottom much. It’s all about access I guess - if the bottom can be done then it should I reckon
But as I write - I’m 20% of the way through the bow and I’m wishing it over already !!!
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt you can be the test subject, we can look in a couple of years time and see how much is still on, it's not a job I ever want to do but might have a go if enough stays on to give worthwhile protection.
Keep going bud, the other 80% will fly by.
for GOD's sake watch your head this time James .
No head injury today - woo hoo
