Steadycam vs Gimbal - What is the BEST dslr stabilizer? - REAL world review

  • In this video I test I put a Glidecam vs Gimbal vs in camera stabilization and find out which one really does give the best results. These are REAL world tests of me tuning as fast as I can across a desert. Maybe I should have tried a normal walk too, this may have been a fairer test between these DSLR stabilizers. Lean what the best image stabilizers in 2017. The glidecam and gimbal are types of steadicam (although this is a brand too) but traditionally a steady cam is a weighted stem for balance and a gimbal is a motorized system.

    G7x Camera - amzn.to/2GRdcSw
    In this image stabilization videos I test the Glidecam HD 2000 and the DJI Ronin M. As a base line I use a Canon G7x with its in camera stabilization.
    In this 3 axis gimbal review I found that the DJI Ronin M review gave the best and smoothest results. Although none of these DSLR stabilizer types deliver Z-axis image stabilization the DJI Ronin was able to deliver almost perfect results.
    A gimbal stabilizer uses brushes motors and batteries to stabilize an image. A Glidecam is a weighted stabilizer that uses the center of gravity to stabilize and in camera stabilization does all the work digitally. Watching this should show you what gimbal to buy 2017.
    I used wide angle lenses in all instances as this should enhance any 'wobble' towards the end of the frames. I have only reviewed these 3 image stabilizers so please leave a comment letting me know what you think us the best dslr stabilizer 2017.

    I see where you’re going with this and I think it has value. As many have pointed out, a balance-based stabiliser, like a steadicam, takes practice. For example, you need to hold the post at the gimbal, not down the post. Of course, there are valid ways to use them however you see fit.
    I’ve got a steadicam and with an arm and vest it’s a remarkable tool that takes practice to learn. That said, the shots you’re doing here aren’t well suited to steadicam at all. A pro operator would refuse to do them because they’re simply too dangerous.
    Would love to see you try a full Steadicam at some point. The courses are expensive but you might really enjoy learning how to balance and operate - and the new electronic gimbal steadicam is remarkable.

  • @pasmado75
    @pasmado75 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    the Steadicam is a gimbal
    Steadicam, Glidecam, etc. == counterweighed gimbal
    Movi, Ronin, Crane, etc. = motorized gimbal

    Happy to see that you finally realized that the Glidecam requires 2-handed operation - so we can discount the "wind blew it around" problem.

    I own a glidecam. It does take some practice ( a lot )... but I love the end result for real estate photography. It gives that 'flying through the room' sensation. Love your channel. Thanks for all the valuable info... especially the lightroom tutorials. You are my professor. :-)

    Thanks for this. I'm definitely on the fence about which way I should go on a small budget. I thought some of your insight of the cons towards the end of the video were just as valuable as the testing you did.

    But with a Glidecam you can get better results by practicing a lot with it.
    A Ronin can be used by everyone and immediately but it will be dead if you ever fall with it...
    Personally I will always prefer a Glidecam, just because it can't run out of power, it's very very hard to break and it will last for years.. It's a tool you can always rely on!
    With that, you can get the up and down axis stabilized by using a vest and spring arm! :D

      many people believe you can get good resutls with a 3 axis stabiliser without any training but his is wrong,with a training i get better results than using a glidecam, without training i cannot get good footage with any kind of stabiliser, power never was a problem since i am using 3 axis gimbals, but i understand , before i ever used electronic gimbals i had exactly your thoughts

  • @flareside4798
    @flareside4798 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Next time out, straighten the goose neck on the Canon and grip the assembly loosely between the thumb and forefinger just below the base of the camera. You'll get much better results and have much more control. You'll also find that you can use the lower fingers on the hand to create a nice vertical tilt when needed so you don't have settle for feet and nothing more at the top of the frame, you can actually follow the runner up the hill and keep them full frame.
    Once you've done this and have figured out why it works so well you'll come to the realization that your high dollar steady cam can easily be replaced with a $15 monopod. While you are probably doubting me on this point take a step back and think about how you are using your steady cam. In order to make it usable you have to defeat the gimbal and if you're just going to defeat the gimbal, why do you even need one? Most of your shots were two handed which did little more than turn a high dollar stabilizer into a two-fisted monopod. Pick up one of the 67" monopods off Amazon, mount the larger camera to it, and grip lightly around the monopod just below the camera at the top of the foam rubber grip. Depending on the weight of the camera you may need to extend the monopod a slight bit but if it balances fully collapsed, leave it that way. Once you work out just how to grip it and how to keep proper tension in your arm you'll wonder why you ever paid big bucks for a steady cam. And while you'll lose that quick front to back spin feature, you'll gain tilt control which in the grander scheme of things you may find far more useful.

    A good review, I own a Steadicam with the arm and vest. I've also used the 3 axis gimbal and I got bored in 10 minutes. They are ideal for quick fun shots but for me im not in control of the camera, the electronics are, which is why I cant stand using them. I also cant see any potential creative shots. In this case the electronics will never go beyond the steadicam. For your next test, go in a non windy location.

  • @Jacob_Roberts
    @Jacob_Roberts 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is an excellent comparison, especially for a beginner.

  • @filmmassa
    @filmmassa 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great comparison, I thought your testing methodology was pretty good actually. You chose a good variety of shots that are chalengeing to any system and soothing particularly for each. Also very good that you included a “baseline”
    My only bit of criticism, if you can call it that, is the vast difference in budget level between the the systems. It is interesting to see how a low priced glidecam fairs against the ronin, but the ronin is not really a budget gimbal and as a really rather professional piece of equipment you would expect it might have the edge. I would have liked to have seen an actual steadicam branded system with arm and vest. It’s been a long time since I’ve used a glidecam, but the older systems had a big gap in performance, not to mention the issues with panning would most likely be better addressed with the arm and vest as the weight is carried in you hips, leaving your arms to focus on framing your composition and making movements. Also a closer match of price vs pertformance in two very different systems would be great to see in a future video.
    Thanks for the test, very informative.

    Very interesting video! It might not be very scientific as you said, but the way you tried to replicate the same scene three times with different stabilizers under windy conditions gave some really appreciable results. Thank you for this video!
    I think the glidecam would be an amazing piece of equipment to start with when entering the world of camera stabilization.

    • @clearlyed
      @clearlyed  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yea not very scientific but then again I have no idea why you would want a scientific test. these are stabilizers to be used on actual shoots. Real world testing is the only relevant way of doing this in my opinion. I think you are right about the glidecam image stabilizer. It takes a little training but in the long run this will just make you a far better camera operator. Great thoughts. thanks.

    Thanks for the great review and terrific overheads of seeing you do your stuff. It looks pretty obvious here that the Ronin was way superior. I'd very much like to see your assessment of the Zhiyun Crane V2 which, although originally targeted towards mirrorless cameras, now with upgraded software, can handle heavier DSLRs like the Canon 5D Mark iv. At $650, it's a mainstream price and, in some YT videos appears quite good as a 3-axis gimbal. I'd like to see your take on it. Maybe it's as good as good as the Ronin, but at a way lower price. Size-wise, there's less bulk to it too. Thanks. Great channel and terrific reporting. 👍

    • @clearlyed
      @clearlyed  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I will indeed add the Zhiyun Crane V2 to my next review of camera stabilizers. I am definitely interested to see the results from a smaller one handed stabilizer. Thanks for the thoughts and i look forward to getting my hands on one of these.

    • @Halunlimited
      @Halunlimited 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great. And it would be especially relevant for me if it was paired with a full size DSLR like a canon 5D rather than a mirrorless camera, especially since some of the mirrorless cameras already have enhanced image stabilization built into the camera body. Thanks again. Hal

    I've got a steadycam that I use that produces some dope content!! You just have to know what to expect when you're getting one. They're IS a learning curve, but with a little bit of practice you can certainly get great footage comparable, or in some cases *better than a gimble. Still would definitely recommend it though...I've got a budget one from Neewer and have produced some nice footage with it

  • @gusbisbal9803

    The way to describe the stabilisation is to say it has 3 axis of rotation it does not do 3 axis of translation. ie it doesn't move inside the axis it moves around the axis.

    Great video! Although not scientific, as you said, it covers some real shooting situations I haven't seen in other comparisons. Definitely helped a lot. I'll have to agree that the chopper sfx was distracting me from the actual content, but of course it's just a minor thing.

  • @DamoDrives
    @DamoDrives 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    It seems obvious the Ronin is going to offer the best results but it is really expensive and not something a lot of people can afford and as an amateur videographer I use a budget glidecam, put a wide range lens (10-18mm) then use the warp stabilisation tool within adobe premier.

    Hi Zed. Great little video, for the next one it might be worth trying to find any of your contacts or getting someone who is experienced with Glidecam to test it against an experienced Ronin operator, and then see the difference with all due respect, as you say yourself, you haven't used the glidecam much which automatically leads the video to show better Ronin footage. you should maybe also check out the Ziyhun Crane which is quite popular at the moment I believe.
    But i liked the video.

      Thats a great idea. i will definitely take a look at getting a number of different stabilizers for lots of different prices and really do a comparison and test. Happy you enjoyed this video though.

    so... yes in the real world, if you were running in rugged terrain and moving the glidecam would suck, but on normal flat even terrain, it probably works just as well.

    Steadycam's are impractical but if you can learn how to use it correctly which 90%of the time I can't the results are amazing. The gilmbals are good but they don't give the smooth energy motion Behind them like the steady cam and look sometimes robotic

      You are completely correct and I think I said it that it takes some practice. I wish I could have practiced more with the glidecam as I think you can get mazing results from it. The wind was the challenge though. thanks for you thoughts.

      @LordArioh 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, takes a lot of practice to make a shot perfect, but not that hard to make it smooth, in 5-10 tries you'll get one for sure. Kick in camera or lens IS, then in post smooth it out just a tiny bit with warp stabilizer, and there you go. If you slow down the motion a bit, it's gonna be buttery smooth. Ronin is for serious production for what it's worth, and for me it looks more like robot POV.

    Could you review some cheaper stabilisers? Like the roxant pro one on eBay/Amazon (or anything similar!) this would be very helpful for beginner photographers/videographers like me.
    Also wanted to say how inspiring you are and how amazing your videos are. You really have helped me in photography and editing! I even watch your photoshop videos too even though I don't use photoshop 😂 keep up the amazing work as you'll go really far, and thank you!

    Keep in mind there are huge price differences between these solutions. Glidecam will be the cheapest good quality option and the Ronin of course is more than double the cost but clearly is quite impressive albeit awkward to use. Don't think the Glidecam 2000 is even available. I guess next time I am in a desert I know which one to use.
