My nominees: - Avatar - Coraline - District 9 - An Education - The Hurt Locker - A Serious Man - Star Trek - Up - Up in the Air - The White Ribbon Winner: Star Trek
I was really upset to see The Hurt Locker win that night just because I enjoyed Avatar so much, but after these past few years watching the films that were nominated that year, I have to agree with the choice for sure. Kathryn and the crew deserved the win just by the fact that they revolutionized the war genre. And sure, Avatar did have a cool look to it, but that's basically all it had to offer. Thank you Kathryn for directing this great film.
Yes! Kathryn Bigelow and "The Hurt Locker". Kathryn is an example for us, Directors, Producers and even Actresses on how to be a powerful and intelligent and capable Female Director, no matter what. I am fierce as well! XX
The Hurt Locker (2009): Oscars Best Original Screenplay (winner) Best Sound Editing (winner) Best Sound Mixing (winner) Best Cinematography (nominee) Best Original Score (nominee) Best Film Editing (winner) Best Actor (nominee) Best Director (winner) Best Picture (winner)
Although some are calling The Hurt Locker overrated and have criticized things like a couple accuracy issues, I think that if you go forward 20 years, this film will be remembered as a classic war movie
I would've voted for Up. It was brilliant beyond measure and just emotionally satisfying. That being said, it's extremely hard for an animated film to win best picture and I don't know how any aniimated films could possibly win it if Up and Toy Story 3 didn't win it. I would however, completely disagree with anyone who thinks Avatar should've won. The plot was highly predictable and the acting was sub-par. It shouldn't be noted for anything other than the CGI usage. On the other hand, The Hurt Locker was brilliantly directed with great camera shots with a brilliant plot and acting. It was nowhere near what anyone would call a generic war film with soldiers screaming "Go Go GO GO!", rather it did a brilliant job of portraying life in Iraq. All in all, I'd say Up>Hurt Locker=Up in the air>District 9>Avatar>Inglorious Basterds
Every film nominated for best picture usually deserves to be there. I see absolutely no shame for it not winning. Especially as you said only 3 animated films ever got the nomination in the Oscars entire 90+ year history. (Beauty and the Beast, Up, and Toy Story 3.)
Two people on that stage suffered horrible tragedies in the past year, Jeremy mangled by snow plow, Alex manslaughter of cinematographer, she dead her hubby widowed and son motherless.
This film still holds its power 7 years later. It is (along with Bigelow's other 21st century film, "Zero Dark 30") one of the great films of this still young century.
So glad that The Hurt Locker did. The only thing that shocks me is that Avatar was even considered a frontrunner. I though worthy contenders to The Hurt Locker were Up in the air, District 9, Precious, and Inglourious Basterds. That's just my opinion though. I still think the Academy made the right decision this year. Great acting, suspenseful, emotional. Not just a bunch of special effects
No one who observed the critics awards that year really expected Avatar to win this or the Director Oscar. The Hurt Locker almost swept the Critics Awards, the only real threat could have been Up in the Air. Avatar has good effects, that's it. In the end Avatar is a much worse Dances with Wolves.
An absolutely BEAUTIFUL movie which i watched using BOXXY SOFTWARE and I just want to say that this one really GOT MY HEART, exactly what a movie should do!
The difference between Tom and Al Pacino doing it is Tom actually knew what he was doing and just went straight for the point. Al Pacino read that envelope and announced the winner like a senile old man.
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the movie magic that Up brought to the big screen, the only animated movie (besides Beauty and the Beast) to be nominated for Best Motion Picture, and it's because it brought all the elements that make a movie great.

For everyone complaining or otherwise being confused about Tom Hanks not listing the nominees, this ceremony is part of a recent format change during which the nominees are actually listed and highlighted in installments throughout the entire ceremony. This is necessary because of the increased number of best picture nominees; in the traditional presentation of best picture, back when there were only like 6 best picture nominees, nominee announcements were accompanied by short clips of those films---which would be long af today with 10+ nominees. By highlighting the nominees here and there throughout the ceremony, you can just skip to the announcement of the winner at the end.
Kathryn deserved best director, but best picture really should've gone to Avatar or Inglorious Bastards. What James did with Avatar was revolutionary. but really love seeing the cast so happy up there

11 years later, Nomadland becomes the 2nd Best Picture winner to be directed by a woman!!!
And now a 3rd.
@@juicygossipworld4024 Actually Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog lost Best Picture to CODA
Oh sorry, I thought we were talking about female director wins.

Top 5 movies of 2009:
1: The Hurt Locker (Great movie, very realistic, definitely deserved the Oscar)
2: District 9 (wow definitely deserved second place in my list)
3: Inglorious Bastards (Okay this crazy Tarantino Idea is amazing, and the performances by the actors are amazing, Waltz, Pitt, that hot theater owner. They're amazing.)
4: A Serious Man (Funny... at a loss for words)
5: Avatar (Well... not Cameron's best but still good)
She`s hardly standing with those two oscars in her hands, but when Steve was there to help her she`s like: "NO! They are both mine!" :D
I love Inglorious Basterds, watched Avatar like 4 times in the cinema when it came out but I felt deeply touched that hurt locker won and I'm not even an american. There is no happy end like in all other movies, there is only life and death and the reality that this movie is based on.
Little known fact, District 9 was a nominee
I wish imagine if Tom Hanks reading all the best picture nominations for 2009 at the 2010 Oscars.

Renner's performance was simmering, cocky and fire powering
'If i'm gonna die, i wanna die comfortable'
scary line considering what he was about to do.
This film is going to get bigger with time. The most iconic film of the 00's.
Period.
2010 people were weird bro...
@@Borganov20 LMFAO, the exact opposite happened, nobody remembers The Hurt Locker and Inglorious Basterds is probably talked more about now than before
Tony Mack and Jeremy are so young
"1943. The world was at war". The world is still at war. Coincidentally that seems to be Hurt Locker's sad message.
The best film of the year. Well deserved.
I like Inglourious Basterds more but okay I am very glad The Hurt Locker won. Great Best Picture win
Love you Bigelow! 💜💜💜
I love the Hurt Locker, and it deserved to win, but really enough of the Avatar hate. It was revolutionary and a great threater experience. And most of The Hurt Locker haters haven't even seen the movie.
My nominees:
- Avatar
- Coraline
- District 9
- An Education
- The Hurt Locker
- A Serious Man
- Star Trek
- Up
- Up in the Air
- The White Ribbon
Winner: Star Trek
I was really upset to see The Hurt Locker win that night just because I enjoyed Avatar so much, but after these past few years watching the films that were nominated that year, I have to agree with the choice for sure. Kathryn and the crew deserved the win just by the fact that they revolutionized the war genre. And sure, Avatar did have a cool look to it, but that's basically all it had to offer. Thank you Kathryn for directing this great film.
UP is my personal choice
Yes! Kathryn Bigelow and "The Hurt Locker". Kathryn is an example for us, Directors, Producers and even Actresses on how to be a powerful and intelligent and capable Female Director, no matter what. I am fierce as well! XX
The Hurt Locker (2009): Oscars
Best Original Screenplay (winner)
Best Sound Editing (winner)
Best Sound Mixing (winner)
Best Cinematography (nominee)
Best Original Score (nominee)
Best Film Editing (winner)
Best Actor (nominee)
Best Director (winner)
Best Picture (winner)
Although some are calling The Hurt Locker overrated and have criticized things like a couple accuracy issues, I think that if you go forward 20 years, this film will be remembered as a classic war movie
Inglorious Basterds > Avatar > Hurt Locker
In terms of intensity!!!
Inglorious Basterds > Hurt Locker > Up >>> Sharknado >>> Disaster Movie > Avatar

District 9 was awesome. And I am still waiting for the sequel.
not only that, but the artistic view and imagery and touching story in general. It was so good people went to go see it more than once!
Exactly, very unoriginal with some flashy new CGI, and people say with conviction it should have won....
An absolutely BEAUTIFUL movie which i watched using BOXXY SOFTWARE and I just want to say that this one really GOT MY HEART, exactly what a movie should do!
the Hurt Locker is the greatest picture of the past decade...
simply amazing!!!
“my name is tom hanks. 1943 is a year. casablanca is a movie. the winner is the hurt locker.”
Wow, you're so original...
So, Al Pacino wasn´t the fisrt to go straight to the winner
The difference between Tom and Al Pacino doing it is Tom actually knew what he was doing and just went straight for the point. Al Pacino read that envelope and announced the winner like a senile old man.
That time when Hawkeye, Falcon, The Wasp and Voldemort won 6 Oscars
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the movie magic that Up brought to the big screen, the only animated movie (besides Beauty and the Beast) to be nominated for Best Motion Picture, and it's because it brought all the elements that make a movie great.
idk418 If I would be able to go back in time I would change the following Oscar years winners

Kathryn Bigalow is a hottie...
She was 58 during that time. No kidding
What was most likely to win? Avatar.
What won, and DESERVED to win? The Hurt Locker.
What's MY personal favourite? Inglourious Basterds.
“Hi, I’m Tom Hanks. Casablanca won in 1943. The Winner in the Hurt Locker. Goodbye.”
What James did with Avatar was revolutionary. but really love seeing the cast so happy up there
The nominees for Best Movie are:
AVATAR: James Cameron & Jon Landau
THE HURT LOCKER: Kathryn Bigelow, Mark Boal, Nicolas Chartier & Greg Shapiro
THE BLIND SIDE: Gil Netter, Andrew A. Kosove & Broderick Johnson
DISTRICT 9: Peter Jackson & Carolynne Cunningham
AN EDUCATION: Finola Dwyer & Amanada Posey
INGLORIOUS BASTERDS: Lawrence Bender
PRESIOUS: BASED ON THE NOVEL 'PUSH' BY SAPPHIRE: Lee Daniels, Sarah Siegel-Magness & Gary Magness
A SERIOUS MAN: Joel Cohen & Ethan Cohen
UP: Jonas Rivera
UP IN THE AIR: DANIEL DUBIEKI, IVAN REITMAN & JASON REITMAN
And the Oscar goes to
THE HURT LOCKER: Kathryn Bigelow, Mark Boal, Nicolas Chartier & Greg Shapiro
Up should've won 😢
The Hurt Locker was the right choice for me bro. It is one of the greatest movies ever made and I am glad it won.
It's not just about the CGI that makes Avatar a good movie. It's the furturistic plot, the story, and visual effects that makes it a good moviemovie.
Tom Hanks didn't mention the other nominees
*THE PEOPLE WHO ALREADY EDITED AN INTRO FOR BEST PICTURE NOMINEES BE LIKE*
I can't imagine being Tarantino or Pixar that night
All the praise to Tarantino is justified. He is the only one who could play with history and deliver and entertaining picture.
When is her new film coming out? She's a really great director.
Her last film that she directed was 2017’s “Detroit” & I don’t think she’s done much since
Inglourious Basterds was awesome, and should have won Best Director as well as Best Picture. You can make a case that The Hurt Locker was independent as well as well acted, but the ensemble cast and originality behind Inglourious Basterds was far superior.
