Afrobeat began in Ghana in the early 1920s. During that time, Ghanaian musicians incorporated foreign influences like the foxtrot and calypso with Ghanaian rhythms like osibisaba (Fante). Highlife was associated with the local African aristocracy during the colonial period and was played by numerous bands including the Jazz Kings, Cape Coast Sugar Babies, and Accra Orchestra along the country's coast. Nigeria later joined the Afrobeat wave in the late 60s led by Fela Kuti who experimented with different contemporary music of the time. Upon arriving in Nigeria, Kuti also changed the name of his group to Africa '70. The new sound hailed from a club that he established called the Afrika Shrine. The band maintained a five-year residency at the Afrika Shrine from 1970 to 1975 while afrobeat thrived among Nigerian youth.

@@thedaybreakwithantoniochebib stop this rubbish!, afrobeat is NOT a ghanaian creation it only has high life influences (that's it) just like it has (jazz, soul, juju,) influences (but you don't see Americans trying to claim). you ghanaians are truly shameless trying to claim something just because it has some high life influence. fela kuti was the one that created and gave it the name in Lagos Nigeria by fusing different sounds together (jazz, high life, soul, juju ect). @@keishajohnson5823 okay if by your standard everything I said was false, am going to go by what you explained in your comments, you knew Afrobeat involves High Life right, the documentary could have easily stated it, it's that simple, TH-cam is a very big platform so we have to make sure that the facts are right. And to your point about Americans not complaining with their influences in Afrobeats genre, is simple they don't do Afrobeat music as the way Ghana or any other African country would do that's point 1 . Point 2 their influences is a small part of the genre compared to Ghanaian Highlife or Nigerian heavy beat or Fuji or what ever influences, I don't know if you watched the hole documentary it sounded like the genre was created with no influences. Even Hip pop has elements of some sort of influences. Just take time to analyze what I just said . To be honest I really love the documentary because it's promoting African music , but to be honest it's lacking some elements. And I hope they see this comment to be corrected in their next creation of another doc.

Bro some Nigeria’s have tried to separate Afrobeats for some reason. Just remember Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Ivory Coast etc... are soo connected and were once under one rule even. So it’s rare to find 1 thing that belongs to one west African country. Eg. The jollof argument.
I don’t know why Nigeria’s are separating us now we are getting a breakthrough. African’s have struggled together.

I am Ghanaian and seeing a couple comments saying Ghana deserves credit. To be fair Ghanaian we don't promote ourselves well and hard enough yet if another country does something that has some of our influence we want to get credit for it. It's good to be credited but people will also credit you only if they want to. Lets tell our story and stop leeching off other people. shout out to Nigeria for always going hard on promoting themselves.

The success of Nigeria's Afrobeat rests on the legacy left by Fela Kuti. Modern Afrobeat may not sound exactly like Fela Kuti, but both sound came from the same philosophy. Fela Kuti was a fierce Afrocentric, who believed that Africans should develop and project their own art and culture. So, he created his signature rhythm, which he called 'Afrobeat.' And he sang only in Nigerian pidgin, mixing in his native Yoruba language. Fela Kuti became a folk Hero because of his Afrocentric and Nationalist views. Eventually, the new generation learned Fela Kuti's cultural pride. They also improved his unique and catchy rhythm, and called it Afrobeats. Fela Kuti's philosophy that is pushing Afrobeat is very well expressed in a song that Fela played with a Ghanaian singer. The title of the song is 'Upside Down'.

Yes Fela went to Ghana but he also went to America and the UK, do you see those countries claiming to have made afrobeats also? Rock, metal, punk etc. sound the same to many. But sophisticated listeners will point out the nuance and innovation in each. For those saying Afrobeats is "African/West African", you actually do our arts a disservice. There are many unique sounds (cadence, breaks etc) from West Africa. Afrobeats is one such sound that originated in Nigeria and popularized mainly by Nigerian artists.

Yes, they may be different but Afrobeats was derived from Afrobeat. Afrobeats is faster, more rhythmic and less political but it is just a modernized form of the rhythm jazz fusion which Fela pioneered and popularized.

The street hawkers though are bottom feeders in this entire insipid artistic chain and are not the ones with multi million dollar organisations bastardizing the creative gene pool by offering false promises. No musician that signs on the dotted line in this day and age owns any of their music. Or at least very rarely as a huge percentage of what is made by the artist doesn't filter through to the artist for years. Just watch the TLC documentaries to see this. Michael. George and prince could tell you that before they passed and they were at the top of their game so what does that tell you about these giant corporations. Your right. No one has to sign up but the lure of big money for a lot of artists unfamiliar with the music industry game is overwhelming. It is only when they start realising that there are more sacrifices that they have to make than first realized that they start to wake up. The music industry in Nigeria is largely untapped by the west hence the mass infiltration now to exploit and make money out of this new resource for them. Love my Afrobeats! The reason why Afrobeats is so popular now is because most Africans/Nigerians outside the country are recognizing the importance of staying true to their identity. There is so much fun in having such a rich culture, and I can't wait for summer to come around so all my oyinbo people can hear my afrobeats. Something about this docu confuses me though; I understand that piracy is a huge problem in Nigeria but it's a huge problem everywhere for all artists. Most artists outside Nigeria make a significant amount of their money from merchandise sales and concerts too so I don't understand what Universal is trying to do. As long as the internet exists; piracy will always be an issue. You're saying it like it's such a bad thing for artists to do concerts outside the country. That's seriously where they should focus on because it gives them so much exposure and there's a lot of money to be made. I'd rather do one concert in yankee than sit and wait for Nigerians to buy my music oh. What's it now? $1= 350 Naira. Abeg!!

The first things you said are such true. 10000%

Respect to Nigeria for their influence brought on Afrobeats. But saying Afrobeats belongs to Nigeria is like saying pigin english belongs to Nigeria, while Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia all speak pigin. Because Afrobeats is simply a mixture of African and urban music and culture.

Right so by ur analogy if Nigerians start speaking twi then it doesn't belong to Ghanaians anymore?

@@aghoghoonokpe5681 + Wow. That's all I got to say. Do Ghanaians even have pidgin English apart from the one they borrowed from Nigeria?

Lol funny thing is I've actually heard someone once say that Nigeria is the only one speaking pigin (when even the IRISH) speak it. Some Nigerians are on another level of arrogance

    • @tbg6070
      @tbg6070 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

False equivalence: Twi is a language that can be SPECIFICALLY pointed to a region within Ghana with particular dialectal patterns; while pigin is merely broken English adapted to each localities. Even Irish people speak pigin, did they borrow that too from Nigeria?@@aghoghoonokpe5681

"Afrobeats" as a contemporary genre is a NIGERIAN-ORIGINATED sound. Sure, West Africans share similar music instruments, vocal style so some patterns will always be recognizable. I mean, everybody raps, and rap may be rooted in African vocal rhythms, but it is a distinct African-American genre.
I love my Ghanaians... but una like to claim too much, jor! Carve out a niche and Nigeria is more than happy to celebrate you our cousins as well :)

They should be promoting their native highlife music but instead they're promoting shitty dancehall(no shade to Jamaica that is the best at it) via Shatta whatshisname. 😂

"While afrobeats takes on influences from afrobeat, it is a diverse fusion of various different genres such as British house music, hiplife, hip hop, dancehall, soca, Jùjú music, highlife, R&B, Ndombolo, Naija beats, Azonto, and Palm-wine music". The majority of afrobeats songs I've heard sounds like the beat of dancehall and soca that are Afro-Caribbean. I want to hear more african rhyhtms with pop/RnB/hip hop could someone may reply me examples of that? Pleaseeee
