They wanted us to believe they're dumb, right? It's like giving a reggae artist a pop award. How can you give an "amapiano" artist an Afrobeat award? The thing is that, they decided from the onset, for reasons best known to them, to give Tyla an award, no matter the genre, and Africans would not figure out. That was Burna Boy's award right there! They knew what they were doing - it was deliberate.

what I love about Tyla speech is the 'African music can be pop music too' That is the most powerful part of her speech b/c a lot of African artists don't have to change their sound, language or conform to blow. Some ppl wanted Asake to sing in English some even were saying Ayra Starr won't blow in the US if she doesn't tone down her afro sound b/c she can't break into the market. The point is BE YOURSELF!!!!

let's be real these mainstream awards shows cannot create a category for all of African genres. if we really need to make a change we should invest in our own local awards and create a structure like an African award where we all invest in. This will highlight out local genres. we need to lead by example and show the world how its one.

People just need to be educated about the genres of music in Africa. I just think people choose to ignore things, Afro Beat/Beats is Nigerian period no question about that, and the Godfather of it is Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

Even in Nigeria afrobeats isn't the only genre, it'd not what defines the entirety of our music. We still have highlife music. Just like Amapiano isn't the only Southafrican sound in SA. It's very disappointing that we things as simple as this have to be explained. Maybe the artist have to take their stand on it, by prompting them ahead of time and clearly showing their disappointment when categorized wrongfully or not even refusing the accolades that come with the misinformation, were that big! It's so annoying. The artist RN dont even bother so much about it. How long are we going to have to explain this for? It's not okay.

Just like Hip-hop music is the face of American music so Afrobeat is the face of Nigerian Music.
Those other genres of music you are talking about lack the ability to break the ceiling
Afrobeat is the major genre which allows Nigerian music to sail all over the world's continents, so let's hold it tight.
Besides Afrobeat is just Pop music fused with all other genres of music we have in Nigeria sooo!!🤷🏽‍♂️

@@justForMenu Afrobeats, as brilliant as it is, is not all there is to African pop music. That’s just reality. Clearly there’s an issue. Be solution minded. Tyla was awarded for a reason.
