  • WCNC Charlotte is putting a face to the affordable housing crisis.
Rachel Mills, her husband, and their three kids are living in a van this holiday season after getting evicted and not having anywhere else to go.
Despite Mills having a job, they aren’t able to make rent due to the rising costs and have been met with silence.
The Mills' "home" is now a red van in a Kings Mountain parking lot. They've been living in their vehicle since September.
“Everybody’s in everybody’s space," Mills said. “I feel like a failure, I’ve never let my kids down like this."
These days, Mills feels a sense of hopelessness. She says the homeless shelters are full and she's made several calls to housing resources which have gone unanswered.

Also, have you forgotten, its not the "Illegals" that are taking from You, Look in the mirror. Its your own "Kind" that takes from you. The greatest lie "Race". LOl.

I think he does. They need to both be working. Also the eviction means that nobody else will rent to them. Even with the money in hand a LL won’t take the risk they will have to go through eviction. An eviction stays on your record for seven years in North Carolina. Evictions are taking about 100 days there right now which means they probably owe a lot of back rent

When you live in your van, having a couple of very large popup tents can provide extra sleeping and living space. Additionally, if you have a storage unit, you can rotate the items you need each week. Knowing where the local food pantries are, having some Obama phones, some camping popup showers and camp toilets can make things more livable. It's a skill to make your van or RV into a relatively comfortable space, with the addition of tents. No one should feel like a failure. The economy is doing this to people, and you are in good company with many thousands, probably over a million in your same boat. Organize the van, and that will help, and get the other items mentioned if you can. Tents are not that expensive, and charities might help you with that.

And who is behind those jobs in the cities, counties and state. Are you in a blue state or red state. That might be the answer of what is going on. Republicans are mad and want to follow Trump's orders of making it hard for the Democrat to live even. I was a Realtor and can see a lot more politically involved. It should not cost this much. DeSantis a Republican Governor in Florida just chased away a lot of migrants working in the farms and construction sites. The Republicans are very angry at him. They can't get the food to the stores they produce, and construction has halted. Any new apartment being built are not taking Section 8 recipients and priced a 1 bed 1 bath 700 sf apartment at $2500. That is a house mortgage. I have a friend who got a home after the complex wanted him to move into a rehabbed apartment for the price of $2000. So he elected to purchase a home for less than the former rent he was paying. He bought a $319K home. He was a Vet and used a VA loan to secure the home. That landlord wasn't expecting his decision to leave entirely. Everyone has a choice. But when you get caught in the middle what do you do. Either you get a smaller mortgage payment or move into something you cannot financially afford. Not all renters are that lucky to find a good home to live in without money down. And if your FICO isn't good then you cannot find another rent or have enough down payment money for a home. They can also toss tenants out of their rent if the FICO isn't sufficient. I have paid rent all of my life. I am debt free. I am a US Army veteran that went thru things and a former Realtor to understand it isn't all about the local city government either. This is coming from a much larger source trying to control the world.

I understand a landlords side in the issue but if they don’t do something about the rising prices on all of us no one will be able to rent from you and your downward spiral becomes worse like everyone else’s. We will all arrive at the same destination just in different time frames. I am sorry to hear landlords are struggling as well as add in inflation and people have no choice but to continue to raise the prices for goods, services, and housing. More businesses will close as people don’t have the money to spend on anything but necessities and that will increase unemployment and the ability to pay rent. Those leading our country should be ashamed of themselves. They don’t care because it doesn’t affect them as they continue to become richer at the demise of our country and people.😢 The blame is solely on the policy and lawmakers in our country and through out the world!

I don’t understand how the United States can raise prices on rental apts/houses in such a way, knowingly that the employments available ARE geared to low paying wages that doesn’t balance housing, food and basic needs. For many, there are those having to hold down 2 jobs to make an income that can barely make both paychecks cover housing, food, basic needs AND utilities. Extremely hard for single person, much harder for families. It seems more like a deliberate attempt of pricing out people out of their homes and calling them “houseless” when the government itself doesn’t calculate a REAL expense, many expense details ARE deliberately left out whenever anyone has to be forced to seek out public assistance, be that cash, food or both. Add to that medical and out of pocket expenses. The number DO NOT ADD UP, it is a falsified analysis of budget. To top it off, the expense of laundry and non-food items. It accumulates as monthly expenses. Where does the need of rising costs goes, if the resources of products are mainly in the USA, or did the government compromise such resources as they did with food crops AND farm animals for meat products. There aren’t enough high paying jobs a regular person can get because NO single company can pay-out such wages without going bankrupt. This country really needs someone with enough intelligence to calculate REAL expenses and not provide FAKE numbers to the government. This is why you have a massive amount of homeless people (that are not junkies) out in the streets in every State. That is embarrassing! 🧐🥸😇

@@sean2015Do you know how much money welfare gives a pregnant woman per month less then 500 dollars a month and you can’t receive that until you are six months pregnant. Nobody can survive on that. And if you work a minimum wage you make to much to qualify for any of the programs you mentioned. The help is not sufficient enough or available for everyone. The help that is available is minimal to nothing. The cost of living has skyrocketed out of control for most Americans and is not sustainable. And although I agree that drugs are a major factor more and more working folks who don’t do drugs are being forced out into the streets because it is just not affordable in our country anymore. Many people are retiring in other countries because the cost of living is to high here. And those are not lies they are facts.

Where are the families of these two parents? Can't they help out or is there some reason they won't? If they were illegally moved from their home, go get a "free" lawyer to address the issue. There is always more to the story than a short clip. I hope they find housing soon and I do agree housing and rentals are through the roof! It's totally ridiculous. Show everyone in the family so someone might help. People don't know people and are afraid to get involved. This is a dangerous time to get involved with people you don't know. All I can say is during the day, while the children are at school, get a job cleaning or painting. Or sleep during the day and work at night while the other parent is watching the children. You have to do everything you can to get out of the situation. I feel bad for everyone who is homeless "unless" they brought it on themselves.
