  • Which arrow vanes are right for you? With so many options of arrow vanes on the market, it's hard to know which shape, style and configuration will be best for your bow setup. In this session of the School of Nock, John Dudley will give you an in-depth lesson on arrow vanes to help you narrow down which vane setup will be optimal for your bow setup.

    The max vane in a 4-fletch at about 3 degrees right offset is what I have been shooting the last several years. Best results I have obtained so far. I was using the FOB for several years, but got tired of them being so easily snagged and getting stripped from my arrow - whether in flight and hitting a leaf or two, or in my quiver and walking through the woods! The last straw is when I lost some FOBs going through brush while walking to a hunt spot in the upper peninsula of Michigan the first morning of a bow hunt. I had spares, but it was still annoying. Been going with the max vane 4-fletch ever since. Very satisfied for now.

    • @sheyanderson4371

      Never tried the FOB, but if you liked the concept, I recommend trying Zinger fletches. I still use traditional vanes every now and then for fun and practice arrows, but I always go back to Zingers.

    I actually tried that process and so called “tested” about 6 or 8 different vanes and configurations. One vane, Heat vanes, absolutely did not work for me but I cannot tell you why. Also tried 4 fletch but could not see a difference between 3 or 4. So I guess the reality is “ I’m just not a good enough archer” to be able to discern the minute differences between these products. I have 2 bows, different poundages etc, and I run different vanes for each because I can, and I can also pick my own color combination etc etc. also, I can pretty much hit what I’m aiming at from zero to a 100 yds with a decent group. But the reality is, I could probably do the same with off the shelf vanes.

    • @YoureSoVane
      @YoureSoVane 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      3 v 4 fletch really depends on the vane itself, your arrow stability (difference between center of gravity and center of pressure), and how much the arrow kicks in flight.
      More vane material pushes center of pressure back. Either with bigger vanes or with more vanes, it's the same.

    • @ChilleDxFighteR
      @ChilleDxFighteR 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends for me on what I’m doing or 3 or 4 for hunting it 100% depends on head I’m shooting for flight, but for target with glue in tips I shoot 4 fletch to be more forgiving it gives me slightly smaller groups but I tested this over a full 3D season in practice and didn’t shoot 4 until the last tournament of the year of the ASA’s until I had a ton of info backing up the 4

    I went with a 3 fletch with no wrap to decrease overall weight for TAC to increase speed and range, and to add a little more FOC. I also went with 2 degree helical for less drag at longer distances. Not sure if it makes much difference but it's fun to experiment.

    Great video man. Thanks for the info. Ive shot 3, 4, and 6 fletch. Straight and helical. When it comes to steering a single bevel fixed blade broad head i think im back to 3 fletch helical. When i shot 4 helical i got parachuting at distance. I also want to keep a higher FOC which is why im dropping back to 3 instead of decreasing the helical on 4. When you come off target and go to your hunting arrows do you have more weight up front or just the 100gn head? I figure since you are a big target guy you probably stick to 100.

    Thanks for another awesome video! When tuning my bow i noticed it likes to throw a bare shaft counter clockwise, but my arrows are fletched to spin clockwise so at some point the spin direction is reversed when i shoot. Should this be a consideration when fletching arrows or stringing your bow? What you said about the direction you screw a broad head in makes sense. Thanks! -Luke

  • @tonyviers-de9qi
    @tonyviers-de9qi ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m starting to think that for the most part …. It really doesn’t matter at all. I believe you can take 2 different vanes. One 2”( small ) for target. One bigger for steering a broadhead. They are all the same as far as functionality and virtually no human can shoot better than any of yhem steer. Pick what you like the looks of and go with it because if it shoots good for you….. there is no other vane that will shoot better than what you already have

    I'm new to archery and haven't been able to get a concise answer on this: do wavey vanes affect accuracy?

    • @bryancullen7172
      @bryancullen7172 ปีที่แล้ว

      Non-expert reply: Yes, but how much depends on many variables including all the things mentioned in the video. Air flowing over a wavy surface acts differently than on a smooth surface and this would necessarily cause a change in stability and rotation, but I don’t know how much of a change this would cause for consistency between the arrows in your quiver. Try shooting/testing an old arrow with the worn/wavy vanes followed by a set of same vanes but in new condition and see what kind of results you get- 30+ yards should show any major differences. Good luck.

      You must have failed high school physics. Even bullets slow down the moment they leave a barrel. And gravity also acts on anything moving through the air. How did you test for velocity at 60 yards? And, the faster an object moves, the faster it slows down.
