      Mr. Fowler definitely has to much fun charading the struggles of a yankee hunt. It was 20 degrees leaving the stand today and the other day I had anatomical retraction in my lower half after setting up a tree stand in the forty degree rain. Keep laughing Mr. Fowler and remember to slap on your SPF 30 before you next pursue Ms. Piggy.

    Been watching your vids since the THP podcast. Last year I shot a super light weight arrow with a expandable, hit one in the stomach and still didn’t get a pass through. Adopted your arrow set up and it sure worked! G5 Montec 100g with 150g inserts on a 30 in arrow, about 515 or 530 grains I don’t remember. Plus a really good arrow flight and we were able to get it done! Last night shot a 8 pt at 40 yds with my bow shooting 60 lbs at 28 in and it entered in the last few ribs, broke a rib, continued through liver and heart, exited the chest cavity, and then continued to score and almost crack his offside shoulder before he cracked the arrow in half. He made it another 30 yds and piled up, never saw that much trauma on a deer shoulder with a bow. I actually thought he had been hit with a car or already shot or something when I pulled the fur down. Then I realized it was my arrow doing that! Thanks so much for the help of figuring out this setup it seems like it’s pretty good😂 Great vids and again thank you!

    Although I have had reasonable success with other setups I have become a convert to the heavy arrow high front-of- center heavy broadhead concept. Thank you Mr. Ranch Fairy!

      I was shooting my test kit in my barn. 250 spine, 200 grain point, 100 grain insert. Goes through my bag target, through the metal siding of my barn and sticks into my garden box on the back side of my barn. I was like “GOD DAMN!” Those 600+ grain arrows are like a locomotive.

    HEY RF, I am a believer. Built the new arrows; ended up at ~ 510 grains tw, 150 grain Cutthroat; just under 19 FOC. Shot an 11 Point whitetail last Friday: was fortunate with the shot so I didn't need Plan B. He ran less than 40 yards, stopped, did a couple of circles and left a blood trail a colorblind man could follow. Thanks for the videos!

  • @mossyhornhunter7022
    @mossyhornhunter7022 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    I switched over to adult arrows 🏹 this year with a 2 blade 175 grain VPA up front hand sharpened . Yesterday I shot a buck at 33 yards from the ground and passed completely through and the deer really didn't know what happened and barely ran anywhere. I shot a piebald doe a week ago and same thing, she literally didn't make it 15 yards.

    • @Skelstoolbox
      @Skelstoolbox 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I get his system and it sounds great. High FOC and increased weight with a solid cut on contact broadhead, but my issue is 99% of the shooting I do is at targets or 3D. And I shoot a 400 grain as well as some 380 grain arrows without any issue.
      Couldn't be more accurate and fly like darts. I guess I just like shooting fast and flatter trajectories. I don't think I could be happy with only shooting 140 fps with such heavy loads as Ranch Fairy does. I still get buckets of penetration at my bow club targets (10 inches) and have to pull them out with two hands. I can't imagine more.. He wrote me and claimed I'd be even more accurate with heavier arrows, but that slow of speeds? I might as well shoot my recurve then..

    • @RohannvanRensburg
      @RohannvanRensburg 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There is a case to be made for blood trails with larger game but my theory is the same -- heavy 2 blade arrow, try and get a pass through. The deer doesn't freak out because something is stuck in it and it doesn't hurt that much. I had a buck jump on me (terrible timing, was going after a doe) with my longbow and I got a pass through but missed the lungs. He ran downhill, and came back not 2 minutes later to go after the doe again. Quickly lost consciousness, bedded down, and died. It's like it didn't even care that it was shot.

    • @mossyhornhunter7022
      @mossyhornhunter7022 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RohannvanRensburg so far that's been my experience, they really don't realize what happened because it's so sharp . It doesn't create any shock so they run a couple yards and stop to look around, then fall over.

    • @Skelstoolbox
      @Skelstoolbox 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@RohannvanRensburg Often they don't know what has just happened. I hear an arrow wound feels like a bee sting if it passes right thru. I shot a sitka blacktail (our deer species on the west coast) and my 400 grain totally passed thru, smashing thru shoulder blade an all.. I heard the snap. The deer went back to eating because it didn't know what had happened. Didn't even run 10 yrds..

    You got it Troy 😎
    After setting up most of both Ed and my Arrows fir his study here in Aus (Pest discovered he had a very willing slave and could just teach/instruct lol) 4 Fletch just took out all the hassle.
    We had mulriple points, broadheads and, shafts from POC to Purple Heart set for bows from 35lb to 100lbs and of course there were the Aluminums, Carbons, Alaskan range, and some weird experiments Ed set up because "someone' would ask "But Ed, what if....?" (**NEVER ask the Doc a question if you're not prepared to travel down that side trail 😂😂),
    How many arrows? Well, I've still 25 doz made for my bows and I sent Ed's over to him with rest of his gear when he couldn't return😪.
    Rounding off: I found 4 fletch meant
    1. Could use ANY broardhead on any shaft.
    2. Didn't have to look at the arrow when I'm following up so I can keep eyes on my pig or buffalo (I'm not into pain - I'm a GIRL)
    3. Gave me more confidence in the arrow flight. All I had to do was aim, nock and release😎
    4. They also drive people bananas when you use the hunting Arras (with Points of course) in a Comp because you ran our of time to make your pretty, lightweight arras😇)
    *shoot just fine - even when they're so slow you can run beside them😂
    I only have trad bows now but at the time I shot these plus my Compound and a few Crossbows. I've misplaced my notebooks on my personal setups bur Ed has all that in his study anyway, but same arrows were set to shoot off all the bows regardless if it were myself, Ed or Friends who just wanted to help 👍

    I've used four vanes over the years several times and I honestly believe they will stabilize flight and it seems to help in a slightly longer flatter trajectory? With my home tests I got hits at 30 yards consistently 2-3" higher hen using identical arrows except 3 and 4 vane. IMO it's not worth the trouble for shots under thirty. Especially at 15-18 yards like Troy likes. Don't even need vanes at that distance.

    Actually some of my arrows have those but I discovered a new hobby when making arrows. I enjoy cutting my own feathers in various shapes🙄
    "Officially" my reason given to Ed was to see if they made more or less sound. Truth - it's FUN.
    If I could play around cutting Vanes I'd totally do that too😎

    Come on Troy. Form and shot control ARE SUPER important. Just jerking back on the string and hammering that that trigger isn’t conducive in checking arrow flight. Going to all the effort to flight tune each arrow is also very important. These two things go hand in hand for a finished great result.

    • @RanchFairy
      @RanchFairy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agree - it is both! But if the arrows aren’t consistent - the whole set.
      Every
      Single
      One
      Then you’ll never be able to “out form” the random launching sticks. I’m hardly a great form guy! But when I tune my arrows to all be very consistent - it makes me amazing!

    Sorry to hijack, because I really appreciate the info, but there is a way to completely waterproof feathers that us trad "off the shelf" guys have uzed for a while.
    Black Magic Tire Wet Shine. Spray it on until soaked, let the feathers dry in the sun, do this twice. I can swish feathers in a bucket of water after this treatment and it beads off.

    Then make the hoodies with out the string. The alteration will have a negative effect on the process causing it to be less profitable. Then you can charge more money for your products and more gas money in the can.

    This is just something that I had run through my head if it’s nock tuned it shouldn’t made if it’s up or down cause the nock is where it needs to be for that arrow to fly the best right? So with that being said I could see why 4 fletch would work the best. I’m I not right?

    • @jhuntley575
      @jhuntley575 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not really, some bows like the sr6 like the spine indexed at 12oclock position where the red works like shoots best at a 6 o clock. Really the best way to determine this is to have your bow tuned of course then shoot bare shafts through paper. Start nock indexing( nock tuning)a 1/4 turn at a time until you find that perfect bullet hole. Mark the arrow at that point and fletch them up. Done. Then throw your inserts in with a broadhead. Put them on a spinner and spin them. Start turning your inserts spin them again. When the best position is found mark it then glue it. Then go watch them fly like a dart I believe the ol saying is. Side note when I'm bare shaft tuning through paper in the basement I use a bag target with loosely packed rags.This allows me to not have to glue the inserts in at that point so that I can do it last and line blades and fletch up it I feel like it.

    Troy,I was wondering if a four fletch arrow might self correct some what better in a crosswind.

    • @RanchFairy
      @RanchFairy  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's actually an aerodynamic property of the shaft in flight, assisted by fletch, not steered by fletch (though the message boards will say different with no actual knowledge, just anecdotal "works for me and I never miss...." folks.
      The answer is ...... maybe. but if the arrows aren't consistent, proper spine and tuned, then, well, maybe. But it would be better to follow that process to get them consistent.
      In a crosswind, higher FOC actually helps keep the point on the shot line more consistently than lower FOC. That is a known fact in the aerospace world. Archery....they just don't worry about the guys shooting rockets and rail guns at Mach 5.
      "doesn't apply" apparently

    I shoot the 300 spine gold tip velocity Valkyrie arrow with a 300 grain insert and a 200 grain vpa single bevel broad head when shooting at 20 yards and 30 yards my arrows hit 8 inch groups but at 40-50 yards I shoot 4-5 inch groups what would cause this????

    • @RanchFairy
      @RanchFairy  ปีที่แล้ว

      WOW!!!
      Did you bare shaft or nock tune the arrows?
      Also
      If you're over 60# and 28" draw, it's likely spine, you might need a 250. That's an adult arrow mass up front (300+200).
