I caught part of a local talk show the other morning and they were talking about this commercial. They kept going on and on about how vulgar and inappropriate it was....and then praised a company that uses “I shipped my pants” in their ad campaign for being funny and clever. Are you kidding me?

I don’t see what’s wrong with the Jack in The Box ad. It’s hilarious, meta, and in good fun.
It honestly feels like another case of something getting twisted around to entice outrage.
Its like people are addicted to being outraged every day, so they need something new to bitch about. Now, is that the best type of humor, maybe not, but it definitely made most people (with open mind) smile at the very least.

I stopped paying attention to the Oscars many years ago, when it became obvious to me that movies were winning awards for reasons other than excellence.
A lot of the time it seems like they get nominated for best picture based solely on the "I don't understand it, so it must be really good" principle.

I would definitely prefer that, though I'm at least liking the fact that big budget action, superheroes and massive series films will finally get some chances at the oscars other than more artistic more serious films. That's kinda how far low I've gone in my expectations for the oscars, this gives them a chance at least because I know they would never bother giving them nominations for best picture at this point (which is what I would prefer)

Personally I think it'd be an insult to UFC fighters to let untrained toddlers like Logan Paul compete. These fighters have worked years and years and years, blood sweat and tears, to get the chance to fight in the UFC and to turn their passion into a career. It is a professional sports competition after all. We wouldn't let an amateur compete in F1, so why let them in the octagon? Let's not forget the physical risks these guys take either. These fighters have conditioned their bodies for the damage that will be done to them. That's no joke. Paul could end up permanently disabled.

The funny thing is, they probably knew the outrage it would cause even while being self aware. Jokes on all the outlets covering it though, because all it's doing is making the ad campaign have a farther reach. I mean, this video alone will make jack in the box reach a million+ people that it might not have seen the ad otherwise.

It does raise an interesting point however. UFC is a place where we see two people who are highly trained in martial arts compete. Will the UFC sell out and start hosting fights with relatively untrained people, just because it will make the UFC more money.
So basically the Oscars are cutting out the categories that don't include the celebrities. Considering the shit they've pulled with the VFX category in the past with Life of Pi, there's no doubt in my mind that's what's happening. This is what baffles me about the Oscars. We have these overpaid tools who spent maybe 6 weeks on a movie and get paid untold millions of dollars, and the VFX artists, editors, sound designers, etc. who spend months/years on a project on a working salary. Who deserves more recognition? Yeah the millionaires. Gotta let them tell us how our politics are wrong.

Never saw the Jack commercial until now, when it got to where the 2 women were in the commercial I was like uh oh. But no, nothing but middle school humor happened. I think it's just barely possible that Academy Award viewership is dropping because people are realizing that it's no longer really about skill in film-making (if it ever was) and is more a political circle-jerk, where people and movies with the right connections and opinions get elevated to the top, and everyone else gets mocked. And that's not even to mention just how pervasive and obnoxious political rants have become in these things. People don't like politics in their sports. They don't like it in their awards shows, either.

For the UFC it's generally a bad thing. It's the premier league with the best fighters in the world. At least that's what it is supposed to be. MMA, in general, has a long, strange history of mixing in these weird spectacle fights. Jose Canseco in DREAM a few years back. Ken Shamrock, Kimbo Slice, Dada 5000 and Royce Gracie in Bellator (some in their 50s). Butterbean, Bob Sapp and Giant Silva in PRIDE. Yumiko Hotta (almost 50 yr old former pro wrestler at the time) against a huge fighter named Gabi Garcia in Rizin. The UFC has always marketed themselves as above that sort of thing. The times they've deviated from that - Tank Abbott in the 2000's, Kimbo Slice (RIP, but didn't belong in UFC), CM Punk, etc - these all hurt that credibility of being a world class league with the best athletes in the world. My opinion here is not absolute and many MMA fans actually like the spectacle side of it. But not me (Jason). I'll stick with my sport over the carnivals. Reality in high-level competition is much more fascinating than trying to manufacture a novel, empty version of that.
MMA On Point totally see where you're coming from, but I also like the idea of putting someone in the octagon to really show how skilled these fighters really are. To the untrained eye technical fights can sometimes go over their heads, but when they see a non fight get push around and played with, it really helps grab their attention like "damn, this guy isn't even a "big name" fighter and he cam do THAT?" It really just makes the champs look like even bigger pros to the masses

Long time fan but first time commenter. I do apologise for the long comment and I don't know if you will see this comment but I live in Bali. Those three earthquakes were big. According to BMKG (the official Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics) stated that the first earthquake was 6.4, the second (and largest of the three) was 7.0 and the one on Thursday was 6.2; with hundred of strong aftershocks in between. The 7.0M on Sunday, 5th Aug, was the biggest,strongest and the longest I've ever experienced. It was absolutely terrifying and I can't even imagine how it must have been for Lombok and the Gili Islands. Up to 70%-80% of buildings have collapsed, there is no power or water. Not enough has been done so far by the government to get supplies and medical aide sorted over there. There are a number of drop off points to donate food and water in Bali and are run by organisations, such as Project Karma. There are a few fundraisers and Pos Indonesia has waived fees for supply packages to Lombok which have been great.
Unfortunately, It's been rather cool too (for us south east asians at least) and there have been unseasonal downpours which has made it even more difficult... The Indonesian government has even waived visa requirements for any medical professions to help on the ground in Lombok, as they don't have enough to cover everyone right now. It's been so bloody rough. If anyone reads this and wants to donate, please do! Thank you so much Phil for mentioning it on the PDS and adding donation links. There all would be greatly appreciated!

I couldn't agree more with you! Unfortunately, a lot of media outlets, majority of which are from AU, have reported that the earthquakes were in Bali and not Lombok which has lessened the urgency of the situation because there's not proper media coverage about it. Additionally, it's been a struggle to get anything from the government whether it be supplies or any type of information about damages or death toll. I have received most of my information from charity organisations, facebook groups for Bali communities and people who are on the ground over there right now. I blame the corruption of our local government and they probably wanting to downplay it so that tourists keep coming. The 2018 Asian Games are hosted in Jakarta and Palembang, so priorities are elsewhere at the moment...Also Bali has been struggling with their tourism because of the volcanic eruptions and rumbles of Mount Agung. A lot of businesses have been hit hard...so I understand the importance of it but it rubs me the wrong way that that is their priority instead of helping their own people on the ground.
Again, sorry for the long comment. It's just been really frustrating and there have been ongoing issues. I work in animal welfare in Bali and it's really hard, so I really feel for the charity organisations that are working their asses off to get supplies to Lombok etc.

ga apa2 mizuko2001! It's hard and I believe it's important to get the information out there. A lot of the roads and bridges are damaged, as well as hospitals. Getting the aide delivered has been proven to be difficult and there are not enough cars, as the trucks can't get to the worst hit areas. There's been unseasonal rain and the price of tarps and tents have doubled if not tripled in Lombok, making it even more difficult for people to get their hands on it. Aide is coming in slowly and things are moving along. It's the aftershocks that create more damage to the already weakened structures, or whatever is left. 521 aftershocks have been recorded so far and it's been said that the aftershocks will continue for another 3-4 weeks.

As an audio student about to graduate in December I find it incredibly demeaning that things like audio and visual editing will be cut from the academy awards live broadcast. Editing is arguably just as important as acting. Sure they don't get the glory of playing pretend for hundreds of millions of dollars. Sure we don't automatically get the privileges of telling the middle class who to vote for just like the actors do. But dadgum it we edit the shit out of that audio and it sounds wonderful!
Connor Raabe my boyfriend has been an audio editor for 9 years now and barely makes any money doing it. But he loves it, even though he is highly underpaid and under appreciated. The least they could do is give them their 15 minutes of fame.

My friend was trapped in the earthquake at Gili Air (one of the Gili islands) and her hotel was destroyed. Luckily she was at a restaurant at the time and was safe under a table, but for two days she, her parents, and my parents thought that her passport was destroyed (my parents were actually asked by her parents to help deal with the passport issue with their contacts in the Indian consulate in Hong Kong). She slept in a field for 2 days and finally took a big risk and climbed the rubble of her hotel to find the safe in her room and she finally got the passport. She was able to get out soon after that and is safe now and heading off to her first year of college, so no need to worry. Still, we were all terrified and I’m thankful she’s safe now. Just wanted to share. :)
