Too Much and Never Enough: Why Women are Expected to Dim Their Light to Make Others Comfortable

  • Margo and Tashira ‪@PoliticsFashion‬ discuss the paradox of being "too much" in a number of ways seemingly exclusive to women & femmes. Society tells us that we need to be pretty (but we can't be too focused on our appearance), we need to be smart (but not too smart), we need to be good parents, but if we put "too much" effort into them then we're "too involved."

    Too educated and too qualified is quite common. They don’t know what my situation is. I don’t know what they are afraid of either. Love you ladies. At 52 I learn so much from you which helps me with my daughters.

    It's intereting how there is such a difference in the qualities that a man looks for in a grirlfriend/wife and what qualities they want to instill in their daughters. If you ask any man with a daughter, I'm sure they will say, they want their daughter to be educated, have her own money, and not have to depend on a man. The same things they look down on when it comes to what THEY would want in a girlfriend/wife. Do they not realize that they are raising their daughters to be single.

      Based upon those myopic and sexist standards yes that's EXACTLY what they're doing! It's mind blowing 🤯

    • @enamill8426
      @enamill8426 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Exactly!
      On a similar, but slightly unrelated note, that’s why it bothers me so much when I see them act like women just make up stories about how they treat us.
      The men in my life literally TOLD me to avoid other men lol!
      What they tell their daughters is way different than what they tell women they want to sleep with.

    People does the 50 most beautiful; Time does the 100 most influential. Both are subjective and I certainly haven’t figured out the algorithm for either list.

    This is officially my favorite podcast! 💜 You ladies speak on so many topics that I'm currently experiencing and processing at my big age.
    As a Black woman professional in the arts, I experience two extremes: being told that I'm "too much" (in appearance) or too quiet(in regards to the boundaries that I've created).
    I've come to realize that I will never satisfy any checkmarks that society has placed on me, so I've decided to focus on my own checkmarks ✔️ and show up as my full self every day without explanation or permission from anyone.

      Most definitely!!!! I can remember as a teenager my Aunt’s husband said “You think to much of yourself”. I guess he preferred teen girls that were seen & not heard in addition to those that walk with their heads down and not up. His intentions were crystal clear; he wanted to check me & put me in my place. I learned quickly people perceiving you as having too much confidence irritates certain people.

    I want add: it also has to be effortless. So the pretty cannot be intentional. The presentation cannot be labored. The work you do cannot be obvious. It has to be “natural “ and society gets to decide what that is. So losing weight by being sick or starved is okay, but being fit and using medication or intervention to be Healthy is gross.

    You really don't want to peak at 16, I know several that did.
