    This is Gold!! Also I've found one black owned hair store in the town of my university. It was very hard to find, i kind of stumbled upon it. They geared towards natural hair which was awesome because i had just started my journey. but her prices were too high for a broke college student. it went out of business a few months after i found it. I havent found one since and that was 10 years ago. The dream would be a black owned beauty supply store coupled with a hair salon. Somebody please make that

      @@taylorcassidyj 😭 the dream. One in every major city. The crazy thing is black money makes the economy go round. We could literally have a meeting and cycle our money in our own communities. Start black chains that better us instead of keeping us sick and docile. But we are not ready for that conversation and the truth as to why we don't build together 🙄

    Sharing my experience working at a Korean owned beauty supply store! In my city we have a Forever21 that went out of business and was replaced by a beauty supply, the biggest most luxurious looking beauty supply in the area. I was in love with being able to be apart of a place that made black girls feel fancy about investing in themselves, we started with a staff of about 30 women of color and my bosses were awesome. Often the customers were disrespectful towards the owners, constantly asking if it was black owned, claiming everything we did to provide customer service was profiling, stealing and theft was out of control, there was so much attitude and drama being in that environment every day. The owners were simply carrying on the family business to provide for their families and help women feel beautiful. I believe this is much more common for owners of them than the constant belief that they want to steal black peoples income and profit from our insecurity. I love how carefully the research for this video is done to give an open minded perspective on it to educate the culture ❤

    I think it is so important for our community to stick together. It's kinda crazy how other immigrant groups like the English, Irish, Korean, Mexican, so on have been able to create successful enclaves as a community. But from my historical knowledge, those communities hadn't been destroyed like many successful black communities.
    I don't want anyone to misunderstand this next statement, for I love diversity and thrive in it. However, I want to point out that it is quite suspicious that the black community is one of the few cultural minority group that hasn't been allowed to set up our own institutions (minus colleges). That, before we could set up our institutions such as hospitals, banks, fast food chains, or chains of any sort, they shoved the idea of "integration" down our throats. But the integration that they sold us wasn't one of equality, it was one where we still rely on a dominant power that hates us. And just to be 100% clear-I am not anti-integration or diversity. I am pointing out the fact that we are being forced to assimilate into a society that continuously rejects us, but still had the nerve to destroy/damage our community. Whether it be us from the Diaspora, or even in Africa.
    But instead of crying about it, let's try to fight it. It may take time, but we always thrive as a people.
    Also, I am not a capitalist. I hope in the future, entrepreneurship isn't the way we reach prosperity. I think, if we really want to heal our community, we have to band together with other communities and take down the powers that be. Black people exploiting other broke people from across the world isn't going to help our community. I know it seems like I'm contradicting myself, but this paragraph is actually what I want our future to be. One that completely rejects the power/wealth structures that evil institutions like racism, were built upon. My first paragraph is just discussing why generational wealth in the black community is rare. But sadly, those powers were very successful in dividing all of us. Blacks against blacks. Blacks against everyone else. Everyone else against everyone else. But I think the best wealth is nature, love, respect, and community. But our current society doesn't support that. Hardly any of those pay the water bill or put food on the table. Things that shouldn't require a 9 to 5 to obtain.

    • @Cynical-kl3wy
      @Cynical-kl3wy หลายเดือนก่อน

      BING! We have a winner 🥇
      Also, we kind of lost the minimal sense of generational wealth we had as a community after they burned down, flooded, and bombed so many “Black Wall Streets.” If not all of em.
      I mean, so many black people (not shading anyone, based on what I’ve seen) sell out at the drop of a hat when some white man wants to buy it out for a high price. When instead, they could’ve gained that money possibly in years from profiting off that business and handing it down to their children.

    i clicked on this, immediately thought of "the sun is also a star" & that was the first thing u mentioned! i haven't read the book, but i watched the movie. that scene when they entered his dad's shop was the 1st time i learned a brief history about beauty supply stores. & it caused me to reflect... even here in canada, every beauty supply i've been to have been korean family-owned (when i was younger i just thought broadly east asian, but now that i can understand basic korean, i know that about my local beauty supplies for sure).
    i thought that was very interesting shows just how much black & asian history has been intertwined in the americas :) not only in this field, but even in the actual fields (lmao). in the english-speaking caribbean nations, when slavery against africans became illegal, the british decided to start importing asians instead (specifically indian & chinese). instead of being "slaves" they were "indentured servants", meaning they were paid a small amount & were given contracts that allowed them to go back to their country after a set amount of years if they chose to do so. many did not go back & chose to stay, which is why places like guyana & trinidad have many people of indian descent as well as there being many chinese-jamaicans.
    also i heard somewhere that the racist policies you mentioned in this video partially explain why many black cities in america often have asian restaurants.

This video is by far one of the best I’ve ever watched from topic, to production, editing, humor, and just the way you talk about things with such ease and passion made me stop cleaning my room and lay on my bed and just give it my full attention. I’m beyond shocked you have such a small following and especially at your production level, I’m a stranger to you but you have more than what it takes to make it big in this scene please keep up the amazing work! also! thinking about your insert about how this isn’t a video to pit our cultures against one another, it makes me think about if any of our cultures at the time had actual opportunities to create sustainable businesses for themselves, that maybe a lot of the discrimination between us in this specific industry may have never happened. for this case, if korean-americans had opportunities other than to cater to the black people around them as diversity was definitely scaring the people in those areas to which people were migrating to, then they may have branched into other industries. this “blockout” of black beauty supply business owners by suppliers is likely because they feel threatened as they have relied on beauty supplies as their “niche” for so long, and the fear of losing money, especially as black owners would likely attract more customers, creates gatekeeping. (not an excuse to do this, but an explanation.) alongside common issues of POC businesses struggling or being destroyed, like Black Wall Street, it’s so difficult for any of us to build our businesses up to a level where other sources of income aren’t necessarily needed. if only the oppressors had never done what they have already done and continue to do for so long, the potential for less worry of losing our sole sources of financial stability may not be as heavy as they are, potentially reducing the high levels of competition that exists in each of these capitalistic industries. again, great work and this was a fun watch!

    I’m not black (I’m mixed) but I’m from The Bahamas and we have a ton of beauty supply stores here. There is one in walking distance from my college and me and my friends love to parues in there to see what kind of skin products and hair products they have. Plus everyone has memories of being in there to either get those cute hair clips or bubble scrunchies or the box of at home perm. It’s just a cultural thing that is going strong where, even as the high taxes and price of living here makes alot of other local stores hard to operate.

    this vid fucking rules. i didn't even know what a beauty supply store was going into this (im aussie + paper white) but now i'm never gonna forget their extensive lore cuz it was delivered SO engagingly. such good jokes, pacing, line delivery, and MUSICAL PERFORMANCE???? u better have like 100k subs by the end of the year or i'm gonna cook up some hexes in a big cauldron to cast on the algorithm

    I grew up in a predominantly black and Latino neighborhood and literally think about this all the time, especially since the shop owners were always mean to their customer base. I think a good part 2 / continuation can happen when talking about nail salons. I recently started to learn to do my own nails and when I turned to TH-cam University, I realized the content creators are predominantly black. So if so many black women are doing nails, where are all the black nail salons?
