I really love your video and energy. These ideas are fun and something for everyone who loves to create. It's really very fun to listen to you. Thanks for making my day better. Keep putting your wonderful positive energy out there.
I've thought about making a digital "Artist Calendar" that artists can use to plan submissions to upcoming shows, application deadlines, merch drops or track progress on a current project. I think having stickers with labels or little icons as visual reminders would be cute and useful if people want to print it out.
I love buying postcards from other artists because I basically treat them like affordable mini prints. This is especially nice at a festival where I can't afford to buy larger prints but want something from the artists I like. Postcard "mini prints" also allow me to hang more art on my walls without running out of space.
I was so confused when she said postcards were out of date. I love them! They're the perfect sized print, I put them on my wall, in my scrapbook, just to *look* 👁👁 I have bought like 50 postcards in my life ever since I was a kid (I have so many cheetah postcards its insane). And I have used them as actual postcards 3 times in my life and I got those ones specifically as presents for family, no need to attach a birthday card, the card is also the gift. No wrapping needed either.
I’d also love to see some cool cases for glasses or those cleaning cloths for glasses. Usually they’re so bland and uninspiring. Also a pretty laundry bag would be nice. Suitcase tags. Lunchboxes. Colourful window stickers.
More ideas - - mouse pads / computer desk pads - bumper stickers - car air fresheners - custom stuffed animals - pet leashes and collars - welcome mats - blankets - beach towels - tapestries - sweatshirts and other articles of clothing - miniature sculptures either with or without a purpose (a character holding your glasses, ladle, etc) - fridge / car magnets
I just had an idea while watching this video - HAND PAINTED RUBIK'S CUBES! You could paint a picture or illustration in any style for each of the faces by keeping them monochrome for each face. I think it would look so cool and I can't wait to try it myself when I have the time!
One thing that I really love about the online small business community is just how HELPFUL everyone is. It is so foreign to me as someone who has worked in retail and is trying to start my own business selling my art before retail makes me insane. I cannot believe just how much information people willingly and freely give actually HOPING that your shop does well and you are successful. In retail everything is cut throat, every man for himself. There's no positivity. Meanwhile I start researching how to starts my own arts and crafts business and I find that people are so warm and welcoming and will literally give ideas for free without a thought in the world that they're giving ideas to competition. It's so nice. It's so anti-capitalist, which is wild considering creating your own business is very much so part of the capitalist ideal. It's beautiful. I love it. Thank you so much for this video and your positivity.
I love art print silk scarves. They are usually way cheaper than something high-end like a Gucci scarf but way more unique and still luxurious. I wish more artists did these. I use them for hair scarves and it makes me feel like a queen. FYI, matte or low sheen silk looks more chic than satin which can look fake/cheap.
Especially if your target demographic is younger ppl (say, college students,) I can't overstate the usefulness of postcard-sized prints. I was selling postcard size prints for pretty cheap recently at a charity art sale we held at my college, and I was one of the biggest sellers because of those small prints. For people with not a lot of disposable income, smaller prints can be a great way to buy art affordably.
I personally am starting to sell scans of my sketchbook when I release sketchbook tour videos!! That would be something I would recommend people to try, so that way those who want to see everything up close can!! ^^ I also charge a pay what you want option with a minimum of $5, so if someone wants to pay more they definitely can! Just something to look into!
Another idea is deck boxes! Magic (the gathering) cards are usually double-sleeved and taken extremely well care of, so people will spend a ton of money on deck boxes to either protect the cards (as a baseline) or to match the deck's theme. A lot on Etsy are 3D-printed that I've seen but I've also seen people do deckboxes sculpted like a hobbit house, a mushroom, or even painted with designs on top (or with details glued on boxes). Just another suggestion!
I like to use rocks as garden markers. I paint and label them with acrylic paint and then nestle them at the base of my plants. It's a fun way to add little pops of complementary color to your garden.
Gotta love a creator who passes on knowledge. You get a sub for that alone. I figured prints and designs on things is the best way to go. Ppl love cute little things or cool mugs etc
I would love a video about where to source some of these physical products, whether a prjnton demand situation or finding a manufacturer. For instance, i would love to offer socks and some of these other products mentioned, but wouldnt know where to start in terms of finding a manufacturer or the vehicle from which i would execute these ideas. Love your videos, they are so incredibly helpful, I especially love seeing your own art while talking art biz and seeing that you are a growing artist yourself and not one of these POD gurus who say to use stock images in Canva or make 6 figures in a year. Your growth is real and organic and you share lessons learned along the way and i appreciate that!
I've just had an idea and had to come to youtube specifically to drop it into the world. Hot water bottle bags. There are so many hot water bottles covers that collect bits and are not easily removed for cleaning. A soft drawstring bag could save so much time. I need this.
I had the idea the other day of offering printed cloth book covers or book bags. I don't know about anyone else, but paperback books don't survive long riding around in my bag. I've had to replace borrowed books a couple of times bcs my bag just shreds them. A nice cloth bag with a flap closure and maybe a bit of velcro would be great for that.
This is the first time EVER that I have been excited about a "Sponsor ad break" within a video......... WEAVE ON DEMAND??!!!??!!!??!!!??!! .....OMG!YES!THANK YOU! Oh and Kelsey.. high-five for all the great ideas.. I feel sort of stupid for only thinking of about... 3 of them myself....
Giclée prints are a must for artists. The colors are night and day and is so well replicated to the original artwork (with a good scanned image) and it looks more premium than a standard print. Like she said, hand embellishing is an option, but you can also sign your print for a nice personal touch. If that’s too much work for you, just add a digital signature so it can be printed on paper. Nonetheless, I highly recommend getting high resolution scans of your artwork before considering any reproductions. If the digital file isn’t high quality in the first place, you shouldn’t expect your prints to look great.
@@sofiaspeakman8086 the file size can vary depending on the image size, but typically 300dpi is the image resolution you should aim for. 250 dpi minimum. As long as the image is 300dpi at the desired print size, the details will be crisp
I'm so glad your video popped up in my recommended! I've been wanting to open a shop for a bit, but had no idea what to do with my art other than prints and stickers. These are all such creative ideas I would have never thought of, thanks so much for sharing!
Something I've seen not so long ago is blocks of clear acrylic with artwork on the back of it that you can see through the acrylic. It's an interesting way to display the piece, but particularly I've seen some people manage to make them have art on the front of the block too, giving it a multilayered look to it and it's really neat. Alas I can't find how to make those myself but it's interesting. There's also lamps that shines light through an upright standing clear plastic, resin, or acrylic with designs engraved in them. And acrylic standees!! They're fun, as well as dioramas if you really want to flesh out a scene inside it. Clay is also good to make little figures. I don't have clay so I shape kitchen foil and cover it with paper mache and paint it. A bit more difficult than clay but I like it. :)
I'm a writer and I find zines to be the absolute perfect product! I'm working on my first one, it's actually gonna come out in a few days. I like to print them at home and I do all the shipping and packaging myself because that allows me for maximum freedom (compared to amazon KDP for example, which doesn't allow images from the internet... i wanna put memes in my zines damnit!). For my fellow artists who are learning how to draw I think this would be a great ideas, I love zines and I want to see more of them!
I enjoyed this video and will probably figure some things out of this but I need to add my 2 cents as a self employed artist myself after 10+ years being active. MOST of the things you mentionned I tried and it didn't work. I didn't sold much or nothing, they have CRAZY first costs if you want quality and none of those products will ever make a sustainable income if you A/Don't have the following B/Don't have the right design for it or your audience doesn't like those products and C/Don't have engagement because all the algorythms are blocking your posts Yes I'm bitter and I'm talking about personnal experience, I tried to improve, upgrade, develop my offer as an artist but a lot of my attempts didn't work and over the last months my engagement just went lower and lower and nobody sees my content. A great product is NOTHING if nobody sees it or wants it or if the art isn't good enough or popular enough or fitting with trends. Most of the suggested items are very pricey to produce and hard to stock if you have multiple designs. I feel like digital content might be slightly better and easier to implement but I'm just not on board trying new physical products that will eventually never be seen or bought. I like creating, I'm making new artworks with the intention to seel an artbook and originals but I don't have much more to invest in terms of actual products costs, it's rather impossible atm. How you would do things ? if you have any tips for me ? thanks
I have a similar question. The ideas sound great in theory but average people don't obsess over these products. Artistic people love to buy artistic products, but the average person really is content with prints from Ross, Kohl's and Wal-Mart, etc... The difficulty with an artist is that we have to prove to the general customer why they should buy our painting or sculpture.
This is a really good list to find. I know this is a prompt for me to start looking into a few of the options that interest me, though I feel a lot of fear with not knowing how to do much of any of these without print on demand except for the ones said to go to thrift stores or make a mold with silicone or resin. So hopefully I'll find something to teach me some more of this in this week
I just came across your channel for the first time, & I have to absolutely thank you for all the amazing ideas. ESPECIALLY THOSE BLANKETS!!! I have been procrastinating for some time on setting up my online shops. Been an artist all my life & study holistic medicine. But back in the 90s those careers were NOT acceptable!!! Now going to school for holistic medicine, & still creating art daily. I am not that great at all this computer stuff. Tho a graphic artist in the 90s ..... 💯 different now. So I have yet to set up shop. I can easily create everything you spoke about & SOO much more. I think today may be the day!!! I'm gonna set my first shop up!!! Im gonna absolutely check out your shop. Love your art 🙏💚✌️✨️
What a wonderful video!! I'd really love to see how some of my work would look on those lovely blankets. Thank you, and I love what you said about wanting everything made by artists. I agree!
A note on the postcard prints, I agree with this point completely - I went to Design Festa in Japan (a big artist alley) and the majority of artists were successfully selling postcard prints, and they seem to be big sellers there
This is random and you probably don't care, but I couldn't ignore it. Between seconds 15:14 and 15:15 an adorable hummingbird flew into the frame. I tried to catch it on pause but it is too fast. It looked like it was in the house. So fun! lol
Thank you SO MUCH for compiling this whole video!! The product ideas and how to get the stuff made has been a big deterrent for me to try to start up my own art shop (I'm neurodivergent and the thought process for all of that was super overwhelming). You did a great job breaking this down in an easy to follow format and I definitely have a much better idea of some things I'd like to try out now. The thrifting idea of plain shirts was GENIUS btw. Have a great day
I make and sell dice on Etsy and I would warn everyone there is a long learning curve for making quality handmade dice but it’s very rewarding. Though not super viable financially
Another great video. I’m stoked to learn about the opportunities with the sponsor of this video as well. That looks to be an awesome company! By the way, I appreciate that you tend to partner with companies whose vision for for they operate and what they offer is almost always somewhat relevant to my own goals (such as transitioning to natural fibers for my wardrobe and household linens). Cheers, Kelsey!
Hi Kelsey! Happened upon this video and am a new artist. I’m thinking about selling my art if I think it’s good enough. I used to do drawings in my teen years but stopped because I was busy working and raising a family. Now that I’m retired, I have picked up drawing and painting again. I love it! It’s so relaxing! Anyhow, love your ideas and decided to subscribe to your channel. I look forward to seeing more of your videos and artwork in the future!
I'm always so excited to see a fellow artist on TH-cam who is authentic and who seems genuinely lovely! One day when I have more art projects on my channel - I'd love to collaborate with you on something cute. So glad I found your channel.
One idea I've been playing with (as a hobby not a business) is to get a button press and instead of making pin buttons, just gluing a magnet to the back. I have no use for pins, but I use a lot more magnets and they're much more functional.
Adding - tarot decks may be more ambitious esp cuz they require specific symbolism or obvious visuals to determine the card they are however for those of us more free flowing with our art and intuitive expression - oracle cards differ from tarot in the way that they do NOT require a specific structural set up - make what you want, as many as you want, find your interpretation to them and your guidebook maybe a some spread suggestions then you have your deck and book to release
Thank you so much for creating and sharing your insightful video on business side of being an artist and avoiding the struggles of financial strain. Your valuable tips and guidance are sincerely appreciated. Wishing you a truly wonderful day ahead.
Sending beautiful birthday and holiday cards from independent artists/designers is one of the nice things in life. It can be a nice experience for both giver and receiver. Just saying as a consumer.
These are great ideas, I got into these myself, the only problem is how you get customers to buy all of it . I had a Etsy shop with minimal success, I have a website also no traffic, I did/ do print on demand, fabric prints, high end fashion again no traffic🙄 I have YT channel,IG,FB page,TikTok etc If you can tell me how to get traffic eyeballs on it all that would be worth a video watching !
A bonus idea for #4 Stickers and something I've been excited to make designs are like.. okay you know those tall solid color pillar candles in glass at bodegas or the candle section of a dollar store? You could try making a label sticker for them. Could be silly ones or good luck, good fortune kinds, or specific color scheme art for folks who match. Anyway I think there's a lot to have fun with for candle labels.
Thank you Kelsey for all this valuable information. I'm familiar with major print on demand platforms but I wouldn't know where to have washi tape, Note pads, notebooks (and a lot of the items mentioned in your video) printed for me. Any tips?
You could try local or online print shops. Some of them offer a wide range of products printed with your own designs. If they provide an express service and/or will produce small quantities you could use them for print on demand, or just buy small quantities of inventory for a cheaper price if you're not going to customise every single item.
I have been struggling to start my new art project. i seems to have art blockage , i dont know where to start. But i know i want to start something again. i used to make characters for people. i hope i can start again. watching your video make me want to start again
Hello Kelsey and everyone! :) I'm a new watcher of your channel and actually a UX/UI designer, not an illustrator or artist (even though I like to doodle things here and there and want to learn art more). Your content popped-up at the right time as I'm considering to offer some digital products next year haha Actually, quite a lot of your product ideas align even with web design, especially those in your previous video with 25+ digital product list :)) Thank you very much for sharing your ideas and wishing you all the best! ❤❤❤
thanks for posting this! your material makes me hopeful for my future.. like i can actually earn money from my work someday. keep these flowing and i will be here to soak it up like a sponge
My idea for custom art stickers is to make my own paint by sticker designs where all the stickers are numbered and correlate with their proper spot on the page and they all form together one original art piece or photo of my choice. I also wanted to figure out how to design, print, and add jewels to stickers that have a sticky layer on the front to stick tiny jewels and reflective shapes in a lovely pattern. Both ideas are not original, besides making them custom into my own designs, and I wanted to make them really easy, fun, and relaxing to assemble because some of the sticker mosaics and jeweled sticker designs can be a bit stressful and less relaxing during assembly depending on how they are set up to be put together.
Just saw this video and I guess I’m always shocked when I see Mothman references outside of my home state of West Virginia. I ABSOLUTELY love it!!! Have you ever been to the Mothman Museum? Anyway, love your videos and feel motivated after watching them. It’s just that implementation phase 😂 If you make that trip to WV to the Mothman Museum, would love to meet up for coffee. Nope, not weird. We are just THAT friendly in this beautiful mountain state. Keep up the great work my friend! ❤
Hey, those are some nice ideas. I'm already thinking about how i am going to turn them into something really cool to sell. I specially like the idea of postcards and calendars. I saw a calendar made by an artist i like just one of these days and it was the cutest thing ever.
Those are really great ideas for starting art merch! Altough you can also sell custom pajamas and cap, I have found amazing artists who have made these merch and they look really amazing As they would be use for comfort and fashionable stuff
You know, playing ttrpgs solo is actually a lot of fun. Also, dice collecting is kind of it's own hobby, so you don't need a group if you want to get those fancy dice. 😉 Although I do highly recommend playing ttrpgs with a group.
Do you do art licensing before putting your products out there? If not, how do you deal with copyright issues and potential art theft?? Been binging your videos and honestly you made me rediscover my lost ambition towards art as a career ❤
i’ve been watching you for a while and i didn’t know you were from alabama! i am too!! so cool to see you becoming more successful, i hope i can achieve everything you have one day!
I went to high school there and have lots of family there! I really struggle to confidently say I am "from" somewhere just bc I moved around quite a bit, but yeah! I have a lot of friends still in AL and try to visit every so often, lots of great people there
I'm a sculptor and usually see so many product ideas for 2D artists. Today I was able to envision some of these products working for me! Would love ideas geared specifically for sculptors as well!
I just posted a sequel to this video where I share info on how to find & work with manufacturers!! 💫

I've always had colorful cleaning clothes with cute art for glasses growing up. Didn't know it's not really a thing everywhere else.

I agree!
aren’t they so gorgeous?? thank you so much for watching, I’m glad you liked this one! 💗
Thank you so much! You've really got the gears turning with these ideas. I'm so inspired ✨️
This is the energy I needed this morning. Ty as always, Kelsey!!
your vibe is amazing
A note on the postcard prints, I agree with this point completely - I went to Design Festa in Japan (a big artist alley) and the majority of artists were successfully selling postcard prints, and they seem to be big sellers there
This is random and you probably don't care, but I couldn't ignore it. Between seconds 15:14 and 15:15 an adorable hummingbird flew into the frame. I tried to catch it on pause but it is too fast. It looked like it was in the house. So fun! lol
oh yeah there are a few that hang around the backyard! nice catch!
I love postcard art because I keep art journals and I love putting them in there
Thank you SO MUCH for compiling this whole video!!
Really random but this is getting me excited for when I start art/design school in two months!!!!!!!!!!
Just seeing this now. Great video!
Off-topic question: Where'd you get your glasses? I love them!
I'm not sure this is it, but they look like the brand Garrett Leight California
I found your shop page on Etsy !!! I love your stickers and thank you for the info on the ideas we can make 😊
I'm always so excited to see a fellow artist on TH-cam who is authentic and who seems genuinely lovely!
Also Zines are usually a great way to sell your art (just like the calendars, it's a cheaper way to own more of the artist's works).
Loved to see more multimedia ideas. I crochet so I try to convert your advice to work for me but it's hard sometimes.
Please note that if you create epoxy/resin items, please use the proper safety equipment in a well ventilated area! Your health is at risk there.
Excellent video!! Thank you for sharing all of your ideas, it definitely inspired me 💜
Just what I needed, this came out right as I'm preparing for my 2nd ever art market😊
Hello! I’m curious if you have any recommendations for manufacturers for the product ideas? 😊
Súper great ideas! Been trying to brainstorm what to do as gifts.
Gracias! And Feliz Navidad!
OVEN MITTS & POT HOLDERS 🥳 MATCHING Apron too!
Thank you so much for creating and sharing your insightful video on business side of being an artist and avoiding the struggles of financial strain. Your valuable tips and guidance are sincerely appreciated. Wishing you a truly wonderful day ahead.
Do you know where to get a calendar print where you can keep the art print afterwards? I think that's brilliant!
Sending beautiful birthday and holiday cards from independent artists/designers is one of the nice things in life. It can be a nice experience for both giver and receiver. Just saying as a consumer.
These are great ideas, I got into these myself, the only problem is how you get customers to buy all of it . I had a Etsy shop with minimal success, I have a website also no traffic, I did/ do print on demand, fabric prints, high end fashion again no traffic🙄 I have YT channel,IG,FB page,TikTok etc
If you can tell me how to get traffic eyeballs on it all that would be worth a video watching !
Omg I always wanted one of these videos. I'm gonna watch it now. Thankyou Kelsey ♡
Yay! Just what I needed this morning ❤ Thank you Kelseyyyyyyy
Thanks for the great ideas, and for having quality audio and video! New subscriber.
Thank you! This is my first time watching you and appreciate this! Subscribed!
Whaaoooo fiber art def looks cool. Thanks for sharing!
✨Thank you so much for this video! My brain pumping with creativity spins on some of these ideas✨
Socks not sounding like a real word after saying it so much is relatable af lol
A lot of great suggestions, thank you!
Do you have any recommendations for sites that print designs on washi tape? I’ve looked around a lot and not sure who to trust :/
Thank you for the ideas. I am a teeny tiny start up and every idea helps!! :) x
Thank you so much for sharing the link to fiberart - this is exactly what I've been looking for!
But i know i want to start something again. i used to make characters for people. i hope i can start again. watching your video make me want to start again
there really are so many items as an artist that you could design and make your own ❤❤
Hello Kelsey and everyone! :)
I'm a new watcher of your channel and actually a UX/UI designer, not an illustrator or artist (even though I like to doodle things here and there and want to learn art more). Your content popped-up at the right time as I'm considering to offer some digital products next year haha
Actually, quite a lot of your product ideas align even with web design, especially those in your previous video with 25+ digital product list :))
Thank you very much for sharing your ideas and wishing you all the best! ❤❤❤
thank you for sharing! im looking to start a shop for my art and this was great video to start brainstorming!!
thanks for posting this! your material makes me hopeful for my future.. like i can actually earn money from my work someday. keep these flowing and i will be here to soak it up like a sponge
I LOVED this video!! Even the sponsor was actually a cool addition!! 10/10 content💛💛💛💛
thank you for the list! and for me, the problem is /where/ i can buy these from to sell them :(
My idea for custom art stickers is to make my own paint by sticker designs where all the stickers are numbered and correlate with their proper spot on the page and they all form together one original art piece or photo of my choice. I also wanted to figure out how to design, print, and add jewels to stickers that have a sticky layer on the front to stick tiny jewels and reflective shapes in a lovely pattern. Both ideas are not original, besides making them custom into my own designs, and I wanted to make them really easy, fun, and relaxing to assemble because some of the sticker mosaics and jeweled sticker designs can be a bit stressful and less relaxing during assembly depending on how they are set up to be put together.
cool, I love getting stuff printed and made. some stuffI never thought of in there (keyboard keys etc.) could be fun, cheers
Thank you! I love your ideas! It helps a lot! Congrats! Big Kiss from Spain
The one print you shown in the video at the start with the embossed dog.. thats just beautiful!
Thank you for this lovely video Kelsey! 🤗
Altough you can also sell custom pajamas and cap, I have found amazing artists who have made these merch and they look really amazing
As they would be use for comfort and fashionable stuff
Great ideas here. I especially love the Fiber Art website. I'm planning to seriously look into them, thank you!
do you have any helpful business reources for people just starting out? I am good with art, but bad at knowing where to start
I would also add Notebooks / sticky notes / writing pads. :) Great summery anyway!
I got so many great ideas from this! Thank you so much!
you are my new favorite channel!
Japan has a huge sock market.. very popular. Thank you for your great work kelsey..ypu are my go to for art marketing advice
This is excellent !! Thank you Kelsey!
You know, playing ttrpgs solo is actually a lot of fun. Also, dice collecting is kind of it's own hobby, so you don't need a group if you want to get those fancy dice. 😉 Although I do highly recommend playing ttrpgs with a group.
How do you deal with products coming from different suppliers within your own store?
Do you do art licensing before putting your products out there? If not, how do you deal with copyright issues and potential art theft??
Been binging your videos and honestly you made me rediscover my lost ambition towards art as a career ❤
Do you have a video of companies to use to make scarves / silk scarves?
How do you make like the little figures in resin keycaps?
i’ve been watching you for a while and i didn’t know you were from alabama! i am too!! so cool to see you becoming more successful, i hope i can achieve everything you have one day!
Same here.
I've created a tarot deck about to fun first 500 a little nervous but will learn alot about selling and advertising
