It was extremely nice to hear that your first year wasn’t spectacular! I’m 6 months in and I felt like a complete failure but I feel so much more motivated to keep pushing
You got this! I felt similar feelings during m first year but as you continue you also learn new things that can help you grow :) best of luck on everything! I'm rooting for you!
I am 37 years old and remember that as a child I used to be so artistic. I have always loved arts and crafts and would often get praised for my work but over the years I have lost the ability (imagination) of creating things. I am trying to get back into it and would benefit w/an extra income but it's been difficult as it just doesn't come back naturally as it once did.
I am 33 years old and saw myself in your comment. Until 15, I was drawing many different things all the time and had great imagination… and then I lost it over the years. In my opinion this started when I began to work. I have tried to get back into it for quite some time now, but it is really difficult…
Maybe start with something that takes less thinking just to get your mind off the usual business/daily life, there are so many hobbies that are creative but don't need the imagination part. Maybe pick up something first like a crochet kit, small model home kits to build, adult lego's, cross stitching, diamond painting or if drawing is more your thing maybe start with a adult colouring book and a little kit of pencils or paint by number? Maybe once you find something that gives you space to think about different things, maybe it creates room for your imagination next.
Your calm voice makes it easier to focus and less overwhelming than the speedy instructions with high pitched voice 🍎🍏🍎🍏no hate for others, just my preference ❤
thank you for the tips! I have been battling with a horrible artist's block for like 7 years now, and watching your videos made me draw and paint again. Thank you! 🍎🍏🍎🍏
i love how realistic your journey is! it feels so comforting knowing that there are other artists who don't know where to begin. I am also trying to create coloring books to advertise to the teachers that I sub for but I don't know where to look to get them printed. where do you get your coloring books manufactured? any recommendations? 🍎🍏
Thank you for sharing your experience! Im starting a small art business soon and definitely going into it planning to make little to no money the first year (probably even losing money, due to the equipment and supplies I need to get started, and any money I put into advertising). It's encouraging and reassuring to know that even if it goes as I anticipate and I only get a small number of orders the first year, it can absolutely still grow into a successful business and I shouldnt give up. Im going into the first year with the mindset of learning the ropes, experimenting, making mistakes, seeing what works, and just getting it up and running. Then hopefully by the second year I'll start having a better handle on things and can maybe start seeing more of a profit for my efforts. Thankfully I still have my "real jobs" to pay the bills, so I dont have an immense amount of pressure for my business to be super successful/profitable right off the bat. If anything I'm just viewing it as more of a passion project for now, that I hope to grow into a viable side hustle after a while.
being my own advertiser and pr agent is what killed the idea of running an online business for me... i just want to work and fighting for attention online was very draining and stressful to me.
Amazing art and I love the video. This inspires me to keep going and not only to see future sales but to have millions of people see my art is just something to experience 😊 Keep up the great content and amazing art 😊
I have just started in this journey of pursuing my own business dream... It has been a self-discover roller-coaster so far!! I've found your video extremely motivational and useful, thank you for sharing your story... I have subscribed to your channel. I wish you all the best, keep growing!! 😊
I always feel shy to promote my shop, do we have to promote our shop regularly? I promote it once and never really do it afterwards... would love to hear your advice.
I totally understand that shy feeling. I've always been a shy, quiet and reserved person so it's been a challenge for sure to put myself out of my comfort zone but has been so worthwhile because I've been able to connect more with people :) One thing that has helped me is to plan out my content and develop a routine. I set time to plan out content for the next week. I write out all my ideas and plan out what to say and what to record. Then at another time, I will go through these plans and ideas and create them. This has really helped me be more consistent. So I hope this is helpful for you to get an idea!
Thank you for sharing your personal experience and insights. This is definitely inspiring. What stood out is that you built an audience or fan base. That is vital because those are the people who will support you and your work and you can in turn make things especially for them.
I’m not sure if you done this yet I will look but could you do a video on your packaging? How you create the packaging for your items and how you pack them? 😊
Love this! Your content is so fun and very helpful. Your videos are so well structured and articulated. I’ve learned so much from your videos, so thank you for what you do!
I really love the way your videos are so calming and set up. They flow soooo smoothly... I always struggled with figuring out what to record and when to record and how to piece it all together. Any tips or Skillshare classes that help on how to create more appealing TH-cam videos like yours?
For my videos, I always start with an idea that I will then breakdown into an outline. I will bullet point main points that I want to make in the video. I take these notes and then create my script where I go in more detail for every point. I almost always write out my full script before I record because once my script is done, I will then go through it and create a shot list. This is my general method for creating my videos that I found most natural to me. I don't have any class recommendations from Skillshare but I've just learned a lot from watching other TH-cam videos of creators that I liked. I paid attention to what I liked to inspire what I create :) Hope this helps!
You're an inspiration. If you could share, how do you convert your drawing into digital? I prefer to do my art with pen and paper, I find it difficult to use the drawing tablet.
Good on you for doing it! I'm pretty impressed at what you have done. Your characters are super cute. I could see them on items like baby clothes or something. Nice. About to look into one of those coloring books for myself.
🍎🍏🍎🍏 Just discovered your channel and loved this video! I'm currently researching how to start my own small art business, so your insights are super helpful. Looking forward to learning more from your content!
I love watching your videos, Jenn! Your art is beautiful and your videos are aesthetic and inspiring for someone like me who was stuck in a day job she didn't like up until last month. Keep doing what you do and wish you all the best for this journey :)
Thank you for this. You gave me some ideas to think about. For example, I’ve been toying with doing digital downloads but haven’t done it yet. You made such a great point (and one I never thought about before) about folks in other countries being able to do it easily as opposed to having to go through the shipping process for a physical product. That never crossed my mind and I thank you for bringing that up! 😃 I apologize if you’ve done this already and I missed it, but could you do do a mini video about the whole getting keychains and washi tape made? Or even, what companies you use? I’m totally lost with that whole thing. 🤦🏼♀️ Thank you for your help. You are really helping out other small businesses owners and those gearing up to start one of their own! 🩷🩵💜
Hi, I just stumbled onto your video. It motivates me to start working and sell my arts again. I have made money from my arts with my sisters back in 2015 ish, when making your own stickers from home was just popping off on Etsy. We both fell off from motivation as years passed and life happened also as we were full time students. Anyways, I’m glad for your video. Thank you (:
Oh I imagine that would be so wonderful to start back up again! My sister and I always talked about making our own stickers around that time too but we never got around to doing because the same reasons you stopped 😅 I'm sure it would be amazing to get it back started again ❤️
Thank you so much for this video. Your art is so cute and uplifting. You mentioned that your coloring books became your bestseller. Do you know what was different than before? I mean how did you find out what you might need to change in order to succeed?
I think there were a couple of things that I needed to change to succeed. Firstly, this was more a personal preference, but I felt that I needed to improve my art style and skills. When I made the initial coloring books, I hadn't made or practiced art for a few years so I was quite rusty. My art wasn't consistent and it definitely shows now looking back. Another thing that changed was my marketing approach. With the first books, I hardly mentioned them on my socials. So obviously if I didn't say anything, no one would know they existed. I also think that more recently, there has been a larger audience for coloring books. I think all these changes really helped make my second attempt more successful :)
