I have to wonder if it was just a joke. Bob has a very dry, offensive sense of humor and is quick to curse at anybody or anything. It showed poor judgement, that's for sure. I totally agree that Geldof has in his time, done some very selfless and generous things. He does, however appear to often actively portray himself as being a reincarnation of the messiah himself and that others are 'beneath' him and his 'cohorts'.

the thing is - bob geldof didn't come up eith the whole Band Aid idea anyway... It was Midge Ure from Ultravox who started the whole thing...
I have to wonder if it was just a joke. Bob has a very dry, offensive sense of humor and is quick to curse at anybody or anything. It showed poor judgement, that's for sure. And I kind of doubt Russel was "a massive fan" of him considering the fact that he couldn't get his name even remotely correct. And obviously he could have done a lot better, like the comments have said, by not charging fees/turning a profit, but honestly he's done more for humanity than most of the people watching even so.
0:34 that look of contempt and bitchiness on Brand's face as he shakes Geldoff's hand might have something to do with the reaction by Geldoff.

Great joke, but even better Russell had the humility to explain it was already written about someone else and wasn't off the cuff, not many comics would admit that after it being such a fucking epic come back.
It was written in the knowledge that Bob Geldof might say something insulting towards Russell, but it wasn't written for someone else, otherwise it wouldn't make sense, it was always going to be for Bob Geldof.
