  • We're going back to basics with how to crochet a simple Granny Square for absolute beginners. The humble granny is a staple for all crocheters, once you've cracked this, you can do anything! In this video I go very slowly and show you not only how to crochet a granny square in a solid colour but also how to change colours for a more traditional look.

    🔥 Frequently Asked Questions:
Do you have a left handed version of this video? If you are left handed, you can convert ANY video on TH-cam yourself! Simply go to www.mirrorthevideo.com/ and follow the instructions to mirror flip any video to convert to left handed!
How much yarn will I need? This is a very tricky question to answer as there are so many variables! How much yarn you need will depend on which yarn you choose, the thickness of that yarn, your tension and how large you want your finished project to be. I suggest making a small sample first so you can gauge how much yarn you'll need. If making a crochet square, you can weigh your finished square to work out how much yarn it used!
How many squares do I need for a blanket? That all depends on the size of the square you are making and how big you want your finished blanket to be! I always advise making one square first then measuring the size of it. From there you can work out how many squares you will need to get the blanket size you want 😀
Do you have the written pattern? Yes! I have written patterns to accompany my video tutorials on my website here: www.hookedbyrobin.com The written pattern is generally released a week or so after the video tutorial to ensure there are no errors in the video itself and to make amendments in the written version if any are found. All the written patterns are FREE to access on my website
How can I print the pattern from your website? Do you have downloadable PDF's? Not at this time no. This may change in the future but for now, I only provide the written pattern directly on my website.
Can you remake this video so it is slower? If the video speed is too fast, you can slow it down! 😀 See this video on exactly how: • How to Adjust the Spee...
Why do you use American stitch terminology? I learnt using USA stitch terms, long before I even knew there was a difference between UK & US terminology! American terms are my "first language" so to speak. If you need a conversion chart, I have one here! www.hookedbyrobin.com/crochet...

I just made my first granny square! Full disclosure, granny looks like she stopped at the pub for a few quick drinks, BUT it is a square. And its overall resemblance to yours is enough that they would recognize each other as cousins, albeit distant cousins. 😅 Thanks, Robin. This was so clearly demonstrated that I can come back for a refresher and be on my granny way!

Hi Robin I have been knitting and crocheting since I was a young girl, I'm now 64. For some reason I have always struggled to master the Granny Square even though I have knitted lace stitches no problem. I recently decided to master Granny squares as I have loads of beautiful wool which would be perfect for crochet blankets. I had to go on medication 4 years ago and lost all my creativity as a result. I've really struggled to get back knitting without much success. I thought crochet might be easier so I searched UTube which came up with a number of tutorials. I would really like to compliment you on your tutorial. The instructions were so clear and structured. I'm now very happily crocheting a big granny square blanket. You have made my day. Thank you 😊.

My dear, sweet mama passed in October. She was my best friend and I miss her so much. I found an Afghan that she had made. It is in pretty good shape except for two squares. I was lucky enough to find some yarn at Wal-Mart this morning that matches. But, I don ‘t know how to crochet so I will need to learn. I do know how to knit so I know that I can do this. I am looking forward to this on a cold winter day in Illinois. Thank you so much for this video. Hi! I realize this video has been out for 3 years, but I just decided to learn how to crochet this month. After conquering my first project of slippers, I was obsessed with learning how to make a granny square in 3 colours (because I like to jump into the fire right away). Thank you for creating such an easy to follow tutorial. I just paused and rewatched when needed and you made it so easy. This is now in my favourites and I just have to make 5000 more of these things to make an afghan! (ok, maybe not 5000....).

This meant crocheting granny squares 5 by 5 to give to the organization. Since I only did crochet stuffed animals at the time, I freaked out because I wanted to help the organization, but I had NO idea how to crochet a granny square. I didn't understand some of the stitches, etc. bc the tutorials went too fast.
