  • WinLink is a powerful, useful program. The FT-891 is a small, but very capable radio. Put these together, with a little help from an external sound card, and you’ll never have to worry about a good internet connection for e-mails again.
    This video shows you how to install the WinLink Express program and the VARA HF TNC. I’ll show you how to make call the connections and set everything up - and I’ll demonstrate both sending and receiving emails.

    Thanks Tom. This certainly could be helpful in a regional/limited SHTF scenario, but my understanding is that the configuration you demonstrated requires reaching a working remote message server (RMS) [that's ok, lots of those] but also with a working Internet connection from the RMS to a CMS backbone server. Probably workable for a hurricane or a flood, but in a cyber attack scenario, it would likely fail at the RMS to CMS part. Moreover, my understanding is that the number of CMS servers is fairly limited. I suggest a discussion/demo of peer-to-peer and hybrid mesh. I have a suspicion that's actually what we need to be prepared to set-up and operate in a real SHTF scenario, especially one of the man made variety. 73.

    Thanks! This is the video I’ve been looking for. I worked on my rig today. (FT-891, Signalink, windows surface go with windows 11). I haven’t been able to make a connection yet. As soon as I get home from work I’m going to go over my settings and compare them to yours!

    I am setting up a 'man-pack' with an FT857d for field/emcomm work. Your video should have thousands of views because it is so good - a hidden GEM. WinLink/VARA will be an important part (plus JS8Call and VARAC). Thank you Tom 73 Doug N8VY

      I’m thinking along the same lines. I have everything I need to put an emcomm system together except a good pack… and more time

    Hey Tom, Thanks! What cables do I need for the FT-891, Signalik, and PC Windows?😂

      USB printer cable for CAT controls and SignaLink comes with the cable for your rig, which is ordered when you buy the SL…

    Would a digirig work too?

    • @ND3N
      @ND3N  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have a digirig, but haven’t used it yet. I see no reason why it wouldn’t work. My 891 is now my mobile rig and I’m waiting for a warm day to install and play with it-and of course do a video. 73

    BTW, Signalink USB on bench and digirig in Backpack (very small and very good). 73 N8VY

      I have used both Signalink USB and Digirig portable, and both work very well. The Digirig is much cheaper, and the only plus that the Signalink USB has is that it has the TX and RX volume controls. 73 KD5YOU

      Try using the auto connect. That will sequence through the available RMS’s until it finds a good one.

    so it uses internet....

    • @ND3N

      Only after you connect to the an RMS. Unless there is a global internet crash just getting your messages out without you needing internet has a lot of value.

      @@ND3N good point, you motivated me to send my first email earlier today. Pretty neat.
