  • The previous video on Winlink received many comments and suggestions - most wanted to see VARA HF instead of ARDOP. This is that video…

    FT-991A Menu Settings
    031 CAT RATE: 9600
(You can use any value - note the CAT RATE)
    032 CAT TOT: 100ms
    033 CAT RTS: Enable
    062 Data Mode: OTHERS
064 OTHER DISP (SSB): 1500 Hz
    065 OTHER SHIFT (SSB):1500 Hz
    066 DATA LCUT FREQ: OFF
    068 DATA HCUT FREQ: OFF
    070 DATA IN SELECT: REAR
    071 DATA PTT SELECT: RTS
    072 DATA PORT SELECT: USB
    MODE: DATA -USB (NOT USB)
    F (-LIST)
    WIDTH: 3000
    METER: ALC
RF PWR: 8-50W start low and work up.
    WIDTH: NAR/WIDE: W 3000
    AGC: Auto
    NB-NOTCH-CONT-DNR-DNF: Off
    DT Gain: 6
** IMPORTANT ** The DT Gain defaults to 50! This will overdrive the rigs modulator which will cause unwanted audio harmonics. Not good. Turn the DT Gain setting down to about 4, and start working your way back up, watching for ALC on the meter as well as the power out that you want. As you move the DT Gain setting back up (higher), you will see your power level increase as well as ALC levels. Find the happy medium of NO ALC showing on the meter. Excessive ALC indication is a sign that the audio drive is too high, and distortion is most likely happening.

Thanks for the video. I've had nothing but problems using VARA with the FT991. Ditto for the other local 3 Hams with FT-991 radios . No VARA problem with Yaesu or Kenwood radios. Nice to see it actually works with the FT991. Time to upgrade the 991 drivers maybe? dunno....

Tom, hoping you can provide some advice. I'm using an FT-991A and have doubled checked all of the Menu and F (List) menus you've noted. I've gone through all of the config steps in your video, have created a test email, selected a 20 meter freq (W0SMT) and attempted a transmission. My laptop triggers the FT-991A transmit, but there is no deflection on my SWR meter noting an actual outgoing signal. In the end of the TX process, the transmission fails to connect.
Any suggestion as to what is preventing my rig from transmitting? I have no problems when working SSB or FT8, having successfully completed a couple of thousand QSOs.
    Thanks & 73

What is the secret to getting vara fm to work on the 991a? I have tried every setup found on TH-cam and none of them work for me. I keep getting “no signal” message on auto tune even though I am well within range of station. Help!

Unfortunately, I have no experience with Vara FM, but will take some time to figure it out for myself, then pass it along

@@ND3N Got it! working last night, well, kind of. It is definitely transmitting. Just does not appear to work with digipeaters, only direct connections, and unfortunately, I am too far away to direct connect to anyone. Thanks for all of your videos, they are so helpful!

Thank you for another instructional and informative video. I did have some trouble getting some of the settings set on my Yaesu FT-991A set as you mentioned below. I am scratching my head trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. For example under
    F (-LIST)
WIDTH: 3200 Not sure where this is ?
    WIDTH: NAR/WIDE: W 3000 Set to W 16K the only other option is N 9K
AGC: Auto cannot change from Fast
DT Gain: 6 is set to 0 cannot change it.

I did figure out these settings. I could not get Width to match the recommended 3200. The maximum number I could set it to was 3000. I am also attempting to chase down a low S/N ratio.

What is your DT-Gain set to - and What is your ALC reading? As you're transmitting turn up your dt-gain until your ALC is about 1/3 scale. Let me know if you get it working. 73 de Tom, ND3N

What drivers did you find that were for Windows 10/11 and allowed you to get the FT991/A option to show up in the PTT port?

Tom, my set-up went well on the 991a with Vara HF and Vara FM , the problem I am having is I can’t make any contacts, the software try’s several times then states unable to connect. Some of the channels I select are not that far away, maybe 28 miles, puzzled, do you have any thoughts, JH KE8TSN

Thanks for the video. I am trying to use my FT991A with Vara. Using the USB connection the VU meter on Vara goes to peak pos. Any suggestions on how to reduse the input from the radio?

Make sure your meter is in the correct mode. Should read between 1/3 and 1/2 scale in ALC. meter setting is in functions …. Let me know if that works. 73 de Tom, ND3N

@@ND3N You got me wrong. It is the VU meter on the VARA display that peaks. Found the solution: Menu item 73 (data out level) on the radio. Setting below 10 works ok for me.
