Yamaha Virago XV920 Cafe Racer Build Timelapse

  • Bits and pieces of our cafe racer build that took us way longer than it was supposed to. The build has been done for about a year and a half and I'm just getting around to posting this video now. We didn't film nearly all the work, but at some point we realized that if we spent more time working and less time worrying about making videos, we'd get things done faster. This video is for us more than anything. Maybe others will enjoy it too.

    I watched from start to finish & was amazed. I'm impressed by the craftsmanship & patience. Not only his but his wife's too. I have a 1981 750 Virago (red) that I bought new in '81. I tried the Cycle Shack duals & found the stock exhaust was better. The Kerker system was a great improvement overall.
    I put rear set(3") pedals , Eddie Lawson bars & a small fairing to help fight the wind.
    Congratulations.

    First things first amazing job on the bike. And now you have memories that you and your children will cherish forever…. May have ask a few questions? That carb, manifold and jet sizes? The paint on the engine semi black or satin? And rear wheel is that off the newer viragos?

    • @rockinfreakappotomus
      @rockinfreakappotomus  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the kind words! The carb is a Mikuni VM30, the carb manifold is a BIP (the composite version, which I don't think I'd buy again), and I'd have to look back into the jet sizes to recall what I ended up on, but I do remember it was smaller than I expected. That detail is going to be different for everyone, so there is a tuning process to work through and find the best size jets for your setup. I bought a variety pack of main jets and I think I ended up using one of the smaller ones, 220 or 230 I believe. For the pilot jet, I bough a couple sizes close to whatever came in the carb, and I don't recall exactly where I ended up, but I think it was around 27.5 or so on that. Your results will vary. The paint on the engine is VHT high temp wrinkle finish, which is a matte finish and also wrinkles slightly as it dries, and I think gives a really nice looking finish besides also being a bit forgiving on the application. Rear wheel, if I recall correctly, is actually from a Yamaha XJ700 II (1985 model year I think it was?). I found that on eBay and it looked identical, so I took a chance and bought it to try out because I liked the straight spokes better than the swirly look of the virago wheel. Fit like a glove and looks great IMO. Hope that info is helpful to you, and all the best with any projects you take on!

    My guy. I need a break down on that media blaster you made. Looks amazing. And how does that compressor handle air tools?

    • @rockinfreakappotomus
      @rockinfreakappotomus  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's just a poor man's blaster made from a gatorade bottle and a cheap harbor freight air blow gun. The media was walnut shell from harbor freight. Whole thing was pretty cheap and easy to put together. I can't remember where I found the idea online, but there are probably tutorials for it out there. You basically cut a hole in the air gun nozzle facing upward and drill a tight fitting hole through the plastic bottle (something with a wide mouth opening is easier to fill) so that the nozzle can run through the bottle & gravity will let the media fall into the hole in the nozzle as you blow air through it. It takes a decent compressor to run it well. I don't even have mine anymore...I let a friend borrow it and never got it back, but IIRC it was like $5 to make, so not a big deal. I'll probably make another some day if I need one again. Good luck!

      @rockinfreakappotomus I'm fascinated with DIY tools. I like the idea of fabricating. Creating tooling helps to create better tools. It's like a mini industrial age in your own garage.

    Wondering where to source the headlight and bracket? Thanks, great build!

    • @rockinfreakappotomus
      @rockinfreakappotomus  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      This is the headlight I used, which looks like it might not be available from that same listing any longer, but most of this made in china type parts are available under multiple listings and even different brand names but using the same actual part.
      Headlight: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07P5WFFQG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
      Mounting bracked & headlight bucket I bought separately on eBay. It doesn't look like they're listed anymore either, but I'd bet you can search and find the same thing. For what it's worth the titles of the listings I bought were these:
      Headlight bucket = 7inch Motorcycle Headlight Black Housing Cover & Bracket Round Headlamp Mount
      Mounting brackets = Fit For Motorcycle Headlamp Bracket Front Fork Headlight Mounting Holder Clamp
      If you search those titles on ebay, you'll probably find the same thing or something very similar. Good luck!

      I was nervous at times as well. Mostly worried that I would spend a bunch of money on a project that wouldn't work out. I only started the bike 1 time before tearing it down and I probably should have made sure it was in good running condition before putting all the work and money into it. But in the end it worked out ok for me. Best of luck with your project!

      nah. you'll find way more joy in life by having kids than all the cafe racers in the world could bring you. it does make finding time for some things harder to do (like trying to build a cafe racer), but worthwhile things are often hard to do. if I'm lucky they'll keep building when they're older and I can just ride theirs! 😉

    What tank, muffler and pipes did you use?

    • @rockinfreakappotomus
      @rockinfreakappotomus  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Tank is a 1978 Kawasaki KZ 400 Gas tank which I found on ebay. Had to cut out the bung and weld in a new one cause I didn't have the cap to go with it.
      Muffler/pipes are just what was on it when I got the bike. I think they're the stock set up with the baffles cut out, but honestly, I'm not sure on that. I had planned to fabricate a custom stainless pipe job, but never did, and I sort of liked what was on there already, so I kept that setup.

    • @rockinfreakappotomus
      @rockinfreakappotomus  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I used this one, which works with GPS rather than the traditional cable connection. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07KPBYR7P/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I also swapped my front end, so I probably could have used the speedo from that same front end if I had wanted, but the GPS one works well and was a cleaner and easier job to fit it to the bike.

    • @rockinfreakappotomus

      It is from a Yamaha XJ700...don't recall exactly the year, but I think it was 1985. I found it online and it looked like it would fit the virago, so I took a chance and bought it, and it ended up fitting perfectly. I think it looks much better than the virago rear wheel and it matches closer to the R6 front wheel I have.
