    Takeaways from Gordon Murray’s criteria: Lightweight (under 1400kg), manual transmission, great driver visibility, useable storage space, relatively compliant suspension, rigid body, rigid suspension attachment points, not the softest possible tire, the engine is over 50% priority, ease of serviceability, no fake vents/grilles/covers/etc, driver focused, made to actually function on the road not just the track.

    I haven’t felt this way about car since I read the CAR magazine article when I was a little kid in 94. It was a childhood obsession and no car has ever topped it since. I’m not convinced that this ever would, because there’s no replacement for the immensity of childhood nostalgia, but it captures a lot of that same feeling about its design.

    Deeply impressive and a true object of desire for every petrolhead. But surely, it must be possible for established manufacturers to build a light, beautiful, basic, nat-asp sportscar with a manual box for (a lot) less than 3 million...That would mean more to the future joy of driving than a limited edition exotic

      They don't start small. That's the problem. They put a big engine or style the shape at the outset.. etc etc then try to cut weight and package the car from there. GM kills them all right at the beginning of his vision of a car. He doesn't start styling until the packaging is all in place.

To minimize the weight, AMG is pushing the small engine to extremely high RPM, it results an engine rebuild every 20 or 30 thousand miles. He complains he had to sell his F1 because the increase in value caused the cost of insurance to be too high -- does he really think the T50 is going to stay "affordable"? What's the point of a car that's too expensive for anyone to drive? I think everyone would be better off if he built 500 or 1000 cars, which would let them lower the sales price, slow the appreciation over time, and people could actually afford to drive them regularly.

      Valkyrie's mission statement is in no way 'The Ultimate Driver's Car'. Yes, it'll be a lightweight track beast, but it doesn't exactly scream 'comfort', or storage space, either internal or external for that matter. The McLaren F1 had all this as well as performance, so the T50 is indeed the true successor.

    I don't understand why he has put a race engine in a road car. He says he's not into numbers and statistics but he's obsessed with them when it comes to the engine. As a result he's got an engine that revs to fast to allow you to make an unassisted gear change and revs so high that the gearing is going to be ludicrously low and not sensible for road driving. It just seems to be totally at odds with the concept of a road car. A tweaked and updated F1 would have been a better option for me. The F1 looks better too.

    • @pjay3028

      @@MrCarGuy I realise people may well be happy with it, but you certainly can't say my points are not valid. 12,100 rpm and 28,000 revs per second are absolutely not required in a road engine. If they were it would have been done before.

    • @MrCarGuy
      @MrCarGuy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pjay3028 You know what else isn't required? A 3 seat layout, a manual transmission, titanium alloy pedals, aaand the car's existence in general.
      That aside, manufacturing technology and materials have evolved to the point where it is completely feasible and reliable to have an engine like this. This isn't the 80s or 90s anymore. This is a showcase of modern technology mixed with the most enjoyable of mechanical analog driving.
      Cosworth was able to save much weight over the S70 V12 in the F1. It is more power dense, retains a wide torque band, and a nearly linear power curve. There is _nothing_ to objectively dislike about this vehicle unless you're legitimately just a pessimistic d-bag.

    • @pjay3028
      @pjay3028 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrCarGuy you really don't seem to grasp what I'm saying. He says that he's designed the ultimate ROAD car. It's not a race car or even a track day car, it's a road car. Everything else about the car is for a great road car so lightness and 3 seats etc is all excellent and very desirable. But what a road car needs is sensible gearing to allow relaxed and economical cruising, that means you want about 28-30 mph /1000 rpm in top gear but that gives you a gear for a 360mph top speed! And when you've got a manual gearbox you need an engine that doesn't rev so fast that you NEED the car to rev match for you to allow you to make a gear change, otherwise you might as well have an automatic. So, in summary all the points you listed are actually desirable, but the engine is simply inappropriate.

    • @MrCarGuy
      @MrCarGuy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pjay3028 "...otherwise you might as we have an automatic."
      Yeah, that summarizes your ignorance perfectly.
      I know exactly what you're saying and you're still acting like a whiny pessimist. It's very sad.
      The S70 was certainly not "appropriate" for a road car either. That's the point. Assisted rev matching (especially this quick) in manual transmissions does NOT take away from the driving experience.
      Get over yourself and find some positivity.

    The design is already more outdated than the F1 tbh, we needed Peter Stevens again

      It's more honest to just say you don't understand how it works. No shame in that. Instead, you've made yourself the fool.

    Those 100 T50 will sit in private collections and never see the road 👎👎 Those billionnaires who buy them don't even have time to drive the car. Just big kids spending their money. They aren't true enthousiasts of driving like me. I deserve a T50. Those rich full of LaFerrari, McLaren's, Lambo's that can't drive don't deserve those cars. If Gordon Murray was truly a great man he would have design a sports car that costs under 50 000 euros so thousands and thousands of people around the world can afford it. 300 horsepower, no 650 bullsh*t that goes 400 km/h you can almost never reach that speed on real world roads ! So it's pointless. A better sports car than the Alpine A110 in other words. Henry Ford his name will last in history books, he did bring cars to millions of people. Gordon Murray only to a handful of very lucky people cheating others in finance or something else. Booo 👎👎

      Yikes. As Murray said, the A110 _is_ the version of this car for the masses at the moment.
      Also, being wealthy and having driving skill is not mutually exclusive. Go back to reading Marx and fantasizing about class subversion...

    if its..also...a highly desirable supercar....it certainly doesn't look like what a stunning eye catching supercar is...its looks are completely functional...as functional looking as a Jet Fighter...and sadly in the end Gordon Murray's new car ia as Ugly and as bland looking as a Jet Fighter.

      @amarjit singh Exactly! I will never be in the position to own a T50! My opinions mean next to nothing, they are just my car enthusiast opinions! Many here have re-iterated to me. 'but all 100 are sold" sold before they are even made, so yes I guess whatever criteria I think a supercar should have, is entirely different to all those 100 customers of this car.
      I still think though, these limited run exotic cars, the first owners, become the next "seller". so I would wager quite a few of these 100 customers are only buying it for a financial investment, THEN car enthusiast supercar criteria comes into play, when attracting REAL buyers for these limited run exotic cars.

      It depends on which jetfighter you're referring to. Both the F-16 and F-22 (among others) are stunning designs! Also, what car do you find stunning?

      @@Mexxx65 Great choice, but I love both cars and jetfighters. My all-time favourite cars are the McLaren F1 and favourite Ferrari, the 288 GTO. Both make me drool like Homer Simpson!
