I'm from Emilo and Kirsty's generation and I absolutely love this story. I think it's perfect. Peak WHO. I revisit it often for Bok and Delgado. Definitely my favourite Pertwee story. 🔷️

Hi all. Your chat brought back memories of our first colour tv. My dad moaning that he was paying more for a colour licence, but most shows were still aired in black and white. Lol. Colour tv in our home was a huge treat, because my brother an I got to have the b&w portable in our bedroom, but you had to keep moving the aerial. Lol. It worked great if you held the loop,so we use to take it in turns! Happy memories. I'm soooo old. Mx

Nice to see the lovely Kirsty back on the panel and of course the man with more knowledge than Encyclopaedia Britannica the legend that is George ( that reference dates me... Encyclopaedias were books kiddies ... think Wikipedia with actual facts👌)

I MUST make a better effort to join you guys live....i really enjoyed this episode. Thank you so much JT and your fellow cohorts for reawakening memories.
Although i love the colour version, some of the black and white stories worked superbly in black and white, such as The Web of Fear, Evil of the Daleks ( which were obviously filmed in b&w) and even the Daemons.
My Grandparents who i used to spend every weekend with( she was an excellent baker and Saturday was baking day 😁, were to die for ) had a colour TV whereas my parents had B&W.

The Daemons belongs in that hallowed minority reserved for those Doctor Who stories which fans, old and new, seem to love unconditionally.
Like all the greats, it was typically unafraid to be frightening, tackling a subject as serious as the occult, a commitment greatly served by the excellent location and extensive outdoor filming.
Those entries in which the Doctor and companions work alongside U.N.I.T are always a joy and, for me, there was never a greater feeling of camaraderie, of that U.N.I.T family, than in this ambitious tale. Although thought by some to be overused by this point, I never tired of Roger Delgado's Master (or his machinations); in any event, could there be a more fitting story for him than this one?
The premise that an ostensibly Satan-like creature was actually a disappointed alien scientist, for whom the Earth was a failed experiment, was provocative in all the right ways. Viewers were invited to consider that science and the occult may actually be compatible, that incantations or equations may simply be different ways of allowing practitioners access to the hidden forces in the universe. No surprise that Barry Letts, as open-minded and contemplative a scribe as you could get, was the ideas man in a story penned by him and Robert Sloman.
Damaris Hayman's formidable Miss Hawthorne gave the Doctor a magnificent run for his money, showing bravery, resolve, and quickly compelling all to take her character seriously. It remains unfathomable to me that this was a rare example of the actress being given five or more episodes in any television series, because you simply don't get too many like Hayman. She played the role one more time, in a wonderful DVD release called The White Witch of Devil's End, holding a very respectable candle to her original performance, and gifting us a beautiful, poignant swansong.
    10/10 without any reservation!
A wealth of intrigue and promise, all of which was ably fulfilled; a genuinely unsettling antagonist in Azal; stellar performances from all; great action; quite possibly, the most affecting, emotive resolution to date!
Abiding thanks, JT, Paul, Ian, Kirsty, George and Emilio, for each giving me even more to dwell on regarding this much-loved classic.
What a great start to Wholloween!
    All the best for now.
    Paul

Hi JT, been a busy week, just caught up with this one, great show. I remember the Daemons on first transmission! scared me as much as any other Pertwee story. Also remember the 1992 repeat, and as you say Tomorrows World did a superb feature on the re-colourisation of the episodes, I think Howard Staleford was the presenter, he was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable that I was convinced he was a fan!

Excellent show as usual, great panel, Emilio and Kirsty back again, proving it's not just oldies that love the Classics .Fantastic review of an absolute Who masterclass of story telling. Frightened the bejesus out of five year old me, but loved Bok even back then. Really looking forward to the Carry on Screaming review.

The Daemons is worthy of the name Classic!
For that is what it is. The whole cast is perfect. Playing their roles and complementing each other in every scene they play in. The direction is top notch and even the special effects are very good for the early 1970s. Doesn’t make the mistake of showing Azal in his huge form. Unlike the Giant Robot in Tom’s debut. Sometimes less is more.
Bok is a fine villain’s sidekick buts it’s Delgado’s Master that holds everything together. Such a fine actor.
And then there is Pertwee and Manning. The decision to let Caroline John go proved to be the correct one as Jon and Katy are the great duo. Second only to Tom And Liz in my opinion. The Brig, Yates and Benton make up the rest of the REAL UNIT team. An easy 10/10. Hugely entertaining story. I’m ready to watch it again now😊

I need to join these shows live, not sure if this has been mentioned but Damaris Hayman got a lovely opportunity to reprise her role from The Daemons in the DVD 'The Daemons of Devil's End'. The story on the DVD is called 'White Witch of Devil's End' and Olive Hawthorne looks back over her life. She's such a great actor. And of course there's more Daemons in the DVD 'Daemos Rising' but it's not a story directly related to the original Daemons story. Did Damaris do anything with Big Finish? I've not yet checked.
