It’s episode 16 of The Missing Episodes Podcast! The third story of season 4 introduces Patrick Troughton as a very different Doctor Who, if indeed he is The Doctor. A question which divides the rest of the TARDIS crew, Ben and Polly.
But despite this fundamental change to the show, this story doesn’t sit around navel gazing. We’re quickly immersed in the politics of Vulcan as David Whitaker returns to pen one of the truly great Dalek stories.
Tim is joined not only by Doctor Who historian Rhys Williams, but three new podcast guests: Something Who podcast host Richard Smith and multi-media producer and DVD range veteran John Kelly. Later, co-host of the most excellent 42 to Doomsday podcast, Rob Mammone, drops by to tell us how he helped to recover some of the many clips that exist of this story.
The team delve into the history, production and themes of this six-part classic, then explore how so many clips came back, then it’s off on a world tour to work out whether one day we might get to see any more…
So put on your Earth examiner badge, listen more carefully than Lesterson and avoid the mercury vapours as we take a very deep dive into The Power of the Daleks.

The story that terrified me the most as a child. The incubation scenes traumatised me and cemented the daleks in my psyche for the rest of my life.

The end of episodes 1 and 2 really stick in my mind, even after all these years. I can recall them like they were yesterday. What happened yesterday? No clue, and frankly I don’t care, not when I have memories of Power. The conclusion of episode 6 is also a moment I remember with great clarity. Troughton acting as though it wasn’t him that destroyed the Daleks is great… his “did I do that” act was brilliant. It’s a great pay-off that seals him in the role. And as for the Dalek eye stalk raising as the end titles start to roll… I jumped out my chair!

Ah the omni rumour! I remember those heady times on Gallifrey Base! The fantasists, true believers and attention seekers gathered in the pinned missing episodes thread cavorted, shouted and bickered with each other in front of an amused audience of varying beliefs. I'd spend hours on the thread, wanting to believe but deeply suspicious.
There was one chap called Scott and he knew that all episodes had been returned, including Feast of Steven. He knew due to high placed contents, and vehemently defended his beliefs for several years. Many, many years later he claimed to have never said such things.
    Happy days.

Fantastic listen! Thanks to all the team! Still so weird hearing my name spoken - no one was called Rhys when I were a lad, but now there are a lot of us! 😂
Keep up the great work guys - love it!

I’ve been very much looking forward to this one!!!! It was the first missing story I read in book form as a kid in the 1990s, loved it!

Power was my first telesnap recon I believe, sitting in my 1st year student accommodation back in 2015. So it holds a special place in my heart, even if I'd completely forgotten the plot by the time the animation came back. And even if Evil is better.
I remember the leaks for the animation. That was an exciting time, sitting in a hotel room in Berlin watching the TH-cam upload before it got taken down.

Tristram Cary told me that his credit for incidental music (initially voice-over only) was triggered by his complaining to the BBC about the lack of it on screen. He was also none too pleased about the music being used in "The Rescue" and "The Ark": he gave no permission though did get a screen credit for these, but apparently no payment!

Gerry says he asked Spooner to carry out the edits as he, himself, didn’t have the time. However, he gave clear direction about what he wanted… or so I was told. It’s my guess, from the conversations I had with Gerry, that the script was roughly 75% Whitaker, 20% Spooner and 5% Davis, although, of course, such divisions are rarely straightforward.

Fascinating episode as ever. Mention of the Tom Tom footage at 1:52:57 reminded me that the BBC Archive posted an HD transfer of it last year, which improves on earlier versions.
