58 - Storm Slows Digging Progress & a Tree Too Close to the Barn is Removed!

  • As autumn settles in, we kick off the week under bright blue skies, with Philippe determined to keep the excavation on track. He’s already made significant progress, digging beyond the new barn and steadily working behind the old one. With good weather on his side, he forgoes filming to focus on getting as much done as possible.
But the next day brings an unexpected turn-remnants of Hurricane Kirk arrive, soaking the site with heavy rain and forcing us to pause the work. Despite the delay, Philippe uncovers an important milestone: the excavation reveals an old barn door, showing that the hill behind it wasn’t always there. Centuries of erosion have built up layers of soil, reshaping the landscape.
Amid all this, we experience a heartbreaking loss. One of our beloved chickens falls victim to a fox, and we sadly find her remains on the property. It’s especially tough, as she was one we had been carefully looking after.
With the rain slowing down the excavation, we turn our attention to other tasks. A wild cherry tree, growing too close to the old barn and blocking the path to our future parking area, needed to be removed. Thanks to our neighbor’s help, we were able to clear it, freeing up the space and moving forward with our plans.
As the storm finally passes, Philippe is eager to resume digging but faces a few more setbacks. Still, there’s a silver lining: the excavation work is paying off, and the newer barn is staying dry. That’s progress!

It’s hard to contain chickens since they can clear a 4 foot fence. In town our neighbors had a couple chickens and every time I came home they were in front of our house or in our yard and there was a 4 foot chain-link fence they used to walk across. Or they would dig under it. If you were to fence them in an area, first I think you can clip their wings so they can’t fly over fences. But putting an underlay of chicken wire under the dirt and connecting it to the side fence and even covering the roofing area with fencing, of course you need to make it so you can go in and out. That’s really the only way to ensure no predator can get through fencing by digging under or going over it. The only problem is that once they eat all the grass it’s just dirt. Unfortunately fencing is expensive. I guess years ago when they had chickens, they pretty much kept them in the chicken coop area. And just fed them supplemental food , chickens were kept to feed the family not just for eggs, so they couldn’t afford to lose chickens. My nephew built a chicken coop and it was on a hill and he planted tomato plants right below it, boy did the tomato plants grow huge lol! Unfortunately, if you live close to people, rearrange chickens can be a huge nuisance, and if you have mulch in your flowerbeds, they will dig in it and throw it out of the bed area looking for bugs. Dig bathing holes in the lawn. And all kinds of things. Our neighbors had them, and I had to sweep my walk between the flowerbeds several times a day. It was very annoying. Keeping chickens with neighbors and free ranging them is just asking for trouble/ complaints from the neighbors. Eventually, when you have everything nice, it’s gonna be annoying if they do this in your yard But luckily you’re so far out and in the country, you have a wonderful place to raise them. I’m giving a URL to you for a lady called the chicken chick. She’s been on TV and is very knowledgeable. Her website deal with many problems, and how to fix things plus general info, all you’ll ever need. the-chicken-chick.com/

Congrats on the dry new barn ! That is a big relief for sure! I like this episode very much. The editing is so good. And the explanations of why you are digging and digging are satisfying. (You have presented these explanations before, but the new viewers must appreciate the repeats). My favorite phrase today is, “It’s just not efficient!”. And favorite shot was Odin, of course. That made me smile. Your fish and veg dishes so appetizing. Also, my condolences for the loss of the hen. Phillipe - gathering, moving, splitting and stacking that old cherry tree used up all the calories. Very smooth splitting of the wood, too. Love the morning scenes. Tranquility. Thank you !

When I had chickens years ago I always had to watch my free-range chickens because there were wild animals and hawks.
So I built a moveable chicken wire enclosure to protect them. It worked great and they loved it. I would move them all around where they got fresh grass and could scratch and have new ground every hour or two.
I just built a wooden frame and made it tall enough so they could stretch and move around freely. Nothing could get to them through the chicken wire that covered the wooden frame.
Good luck with you chickens and everything else.
    You're making great progress.

I've been watching you from the very beginning. Mu father restored 2 old farmhouses in Connecticut. No plumbing, no electricity, no running water. We, the family, were living in them after the most rudimentary repairs. He did all of the work by himself. So I have some idea of what you're going through. The most challenging thing is coming up against unexpected problems (I was going to say disasters, because mostly they are).
I'm amazed by your continual courage and mental health.

@@trailboss6057 unfortunately donkeys won’t deter foxes. I keep horses and they are the same. Foxes don’t like the smell of Alpaca urine and if Alpaca see a fox they make a warning noise which scares them off. Horses and donkeys don’t take any notice of foxes.

It's amazing how much soil can build up and it really was smart of you to tackle that job even though it's a bearcat! I keep wondering whether it would have been worth it and whether it might still be worth it to lay down a gravel path. Maybe it would just cost too much and take too much gravel to be meaningful and it wouldn't help you on your dam. What about a roadway made of plywood? Probably still wouldn't work. Oh well, I guess I may just be times like this where there's no substitute for waiting for mother nature to cooperate. Loving your channel!! ❤❤❤

Weather is something you kind of put up with. Yeah, it slows all kinds of work down. We had a lot of rain, end of August into September and it was torrential! Caused all kinds of damage at the area of the property my D lives on. But we've had some fine days to work lately and most of the drainage issues have been corrected (we hope!).

If you have lots of wood chip, it is useful for paths in muddy areas, or alternatively make a hot bed for growing vegetables earlier than seasonally usual.

Great progress. Every little step counts. The chickens, dog and cat DON'T seem to be bothered. As long as they can roam free and eat and rest when they want, they are happy. Difficult for them to be tired due to the hard work they put in around the farm. Security, etc🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Well done guys for the experience.

picking them up every time you split them you just need to circle around the stump splitting as you go 👍🏼

In all the videos I never realised there was a rear door on the old barn that's incredible.
You mentioned the wet ground at the side of the old barn beside the gates, will you be draining that towards the road (even temporarily) and will that drainage work be started before the winter stop?
Before you give up for the winter Philippe will you be grading the digging area to move the water towards your drainage channel and stop puddles of standing water etc
It was amazing to see the layers of the earth that had built up over the decades and centuries of neglect, for sure your homestead will be a better place with that removed and better water management in place.
    Stay safe folks

    • @DomaineSauvage
      @DomaineSauvage  3 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +3

Thx Scott, there is a drainage on the corner of the barn and the road that goes to the middle of our yard 😂so i will keep that in place until we have a better solution.
The part next to the barns is higher then the drain at the other side but ideally i would love to get it smooth if the weather permits me.
It was such a great view to see the layers and the old path!

Nonetheless, GREAT progress. Slow and steady wins the race in this particular situation it seems. It’s nice to see how you are building a great future “brick by brick”. Nature has its own way, you do what you can, a vulnerable chicken will always be the first loss. You’ll figure it out, you clearly have enough intelligence, experience and ingenuity. Your subscriber ship continues to grow. I love seeing your progress, despite all that mind boggling amount of mud, steady on!
