    I'm actually using this video to reverse engineer the correct wiring for an engine that belongs to this remote - a 1998 Evinrude 115hp (intruder / spitfire). SOOO much more helpful than anything else I've run across in several days of searching!

    Thank You! I have a 1983 Johnson with a BRP controller that was added before I bought the boat. I am having some issues with the outboard starting and I think the answer lies in this connection you demonstrated. I think something there is corroded or broken. Even if it is not, this was a great tutorial.

    Years later and this video is still doing the lords work. Followed everything you did and worked perfect. Question though, how did you resolve the horn? I would like it to beep when turned on and not sure it will beep if over heated while it’s currently spliced into the harness like you have it here.

    If you cut clean line of wires, you could just cut back an inch if possible, an not cut wire end connectors. That way you could have useable wire ends instead of garbage! Now if you need wire ends specific to those ends you can solder wire onto inch wire. But you know all this! I liked you explaining the wire colors that helps me a lot. I have the old style on 48 Evinrude. I'd like to upgrade motor to four stroke.

      Question… I have a purple wire coming off of my trim gauge. It goes to the little plug that went into the old throttle remote control. Does it need to go somewhere now? Or is it useless? I still have the black with white stripe, and the white with yellow stripe. But also a purple coming off the trim gauge.

    I just picked up a 1986 Ebbtide DynaTrak 180ss ski/fish boat and trailer for FREE. Needs like work. It does not have a motor on it but I got a 100hp Johnson Javelin on the way. The control box had been torn apart and pieces lost. I'm thinking of buying a newer model like the one you have in video. Where can I find the cable with the Red end? The 100 Johnson I'm getting has the red plug still on it.

    FWIW - soldering isn't always best. Race car builders use all mechanical crimps and shrink tube. The low temp "heat gun" solder / shrink in one step things are even worse - you end up with a cold solder joint nearly every time. Real solder is ok, but the heat, stiffness, corrosion point - crimping and shrink tubing like you do - is IMHO the BEST way to do it. Race car guys don't like solder mostly because vibrations can make the joints bad without being readily apparent it's bad.

Just watched your video of course, but some people on google keep talking about the big red plug, so here my questions. Is the harness adapter made to go in the motor end or box end? Can i just cut the wires and joint them together or is the adapter mandatory? Hope you can read this thanks

    • @BrandonsGarage
      @BrandonsGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, the red plug is just an identifer, it tells you which controller plugs into what. They have yellow, and black plugs as well. However your engine would have a red plug. If you buy a used controller (or new; old stock) with the red plug, itll fit your engine.
      if you buy a newer style controller, it'll still work with your engine, you would just need the adapter.
      And yes you could splice the wires as I did here.
      whats wrong with your old controller.

Let me make sure im understanding correct, i’ll order a new style control box, but the box wont come with the red plug, the red plug there now will stay there and connect to the new box with the adapter? Hi Brandon, I like your videos and have learned so much from them. Could I us my current harness, cut the harness before the old OEM control and just splice the wires together, adding the extra leads as you did, instead of using the quick plug connectors? In asking this, I know that your way is the proper way, making it easier down the road to just unplug. Thanks for you time. Keep up the great videos.

    • @PatrickBageant
      @PatrickBageant 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course you can -- a connection is a connection, and the disconnect plugs just mean you can disconnect and reconnect without cutting and re-splicing. Which you'll appreciate if you ever replace you controller, paint your boat, re-do your dash, or re-route major wiring. Choice is yours.

      Making a video on it would be a pretty good idea.

    I have 1999 boat with Johnson controls(harness) and I'm gonna mount a 1978 Johnson 150. Basically doing what you've done here. The difference is that I'd like to swap the motor side end of the 1999 harness with the same end of the 1978 harness( I actually have both harnesses). So I'm just gonna put the big red plug on the end of the 1999 harness and plug it into the older motor harness. Do you see any issues with doing it this way over the way you've shown.

      Nope.
      Only one wire is a different color too.
      Black, became black with white stipe.
      Otherwise, just connect them all together and enjoy.

      After connecting wires, I get power to the accessories but not the ignition(key). I reconnected the old harness and control and the motor starts. Connect the new one back and still not power at ignition. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
      There is the 2 extra plugs that aren't connected to anything, one had 3 wire which I'm guessing was tilt/trim. Not sure what the other is or if its related to my problem but its 6 wire

      I have a similar problem, my motor is a 1990, with a big red plug, but my controller and wiring are later model. I was going to cut the red plug off and rewire the motor end

    Technically speaking, instead of buying the retrofit harness, could I not just cut the old control end off of my existing harness and wire it to the new controls that way? Also my older style control doesn't beep when you turn the key, I know the horn works though.

    Hi there I'm in the process of redoing a harness on my Johnson 50. Running into problem. Where in the motor does the black with yellow stripe connect to. Also where does the solid purple connect to

    • @BrandonsGarage
      @BrandonsGarage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, are you doing the same thing as I did here? Or are you working on the engine harness?
      Also, what year engine are you working on?
      Without knowing these details, and assuming you ware working on a 1995 or prior engine harness;
      The black with yellow connects to the power pack. This is the 'stop' feature.
      The solid purple may not connect to anything; it isn't used in every outboards. I usually only see this wire used on larger engines, and then it connects to the stator or the voltage regulator.

      1988 Johnson 50 it's a motor I picked up to use the red plug on the engine harness was cut off. It has purple with white stripe but the boat harness has solid purple and a purple with white stripe. Also the black with yellow stripe on the motor is cut and I don't know where it connects to the motor

      My only concern with that, is that there like two cables that have some “metal thing at the end” and I don’t know where to put those on the brp. I think they are called shift and throttle cable shifters
