Great video! The only one I'd disagree with is the Milwaukee Road A class, but I can see why streamlining an Atlantic could be considered weird. Yet, I'm fascinated by these unusual streamlining methods, since it's a departure of the norm. Hence why I focus on streamlined doodlebugs often since they're unsuspecting motor cars that are given state of the art streamlining, even though they're still serving the smallest of branch lines. Fun Fact: the Pennsylvania Railroad also considered streamlining one of their Atlantics, but plans for this didn't go past the drawing board. Also, thanks for introducing me to the NZR D class of 1929. I find that little engine so adorable.

The only Pennsy 4-4-2 I know of is No. 7002, at least I'm pretty sure that one's an Atlantic. My knowledge on Pennsy steamers is poor outside of the S1, S2, T1, Q2 and K4.
As for that little NZR D 1 locomotive, she wasn't the first D class on our turf. The first one was a 2-4-0 tank from the 1880s, and I've featured one of them here ~ th-cam.com/video/AoFjE-q0JmA/w-d-xo.html

1:37 I actually really like the SR Q1s, they were designed for one purpose, to pull freight during WWII, with everything unnecessary left out. It was also the most powerful British 0-6-0 built. I like the aesthetic they have.
1:41 I kinda like the BQ23-7s, their cab is interesting.
1:54 Definitely not the best looking, but I kinda like it because of that I guess lol
3:39 Yeah, don’t really like that cab, though I wouldn’t say it’s one of the ugliest locomotives.
6:25 I’m not a big fan of the nose either, though I don’t think that’s nearly enough to call it ugly, the rest of the locomotive looks pretty good.
7:11 Dieselization started pretty early in the US, starting a bit before WWII, might’ve even been finished earlier if it wasn’t for the war.
7:40 Not really going to defend the F125.
9:11 Not a big fan of these either, though they look better than the F125s imo.
Also, VIA is getting SCV-42s, that look like the SCB-40s.
10:07 Speaking of, I kinda like these, along with the VIA SCV-42s and Amtrak ALC-42, which have a more streamlined nose than the SC-44s and less than the SCB-40s and SCV-42s.
10:59 Kinda weird, but I like that.
13:35 I really like the BM&LP E60Cs, three window cabs are neat, as well as the paint being good. I’m not as much of a fan of the Amtrak E60CPs & E60CHs though (I do like PhIII on them). The E60C-2s are my favorite version though, and all of their schemes look good on them.
14:51 Not a big fan of the U50s or U50Cs, but there’s something I like about them, not sure what.
16:16 I love the MILW A Class, being some of, if not, the first locomotives built to run at over 100 mph in service, also they almost got the speed record before Mallard did. I also just really like their streamlining, and that it’s on such a small locomotive. (Don’t tell them about the MILW streamlined 4-6-0s lol)
17:57 I don’t really see the big boiler as an issue, I think they look just fine with it.
19:55 I think the BL1 & BL2s some kind of charm to them, also they lead to the GP7s, so it all worked out.
20:49 I really like the C&O L1s, also (iirc) they are the only preserved (fully) streamlined Hudson class. (I wouldn’t call the CP Royal Hudsons fully streamlined and CB&Q 4000, formerly Aeolus, isn’t streamlined in preservation).
20:54 I wouldn’t call that one of the ugliest, imo the British Class 70 is worse.
    20:55 I’d call that cute
20:57 And that one I’d call goofy lol
21:54 I don’t know what it is, but I like something about them.

My choices are some of Nigel Gresley's locomotives (did I commit sacrilege?) The one off Gresley "Hush Hush" locomotive looks like a cross between a tube of toothpaste with some of the toothpaste squeezed out, and a burrito on wheels.
The Gresley A4's (I'll wait for your hate mail) Their hump backed shape boilers make them look like a fish or a loaf of bread on wheels. They could have at least smoothed out the lump in the top of the boiler casing (the result of wind tunnel testing with a plastic model) Also, the black/dark paint on the front sides of the engine could have been extended backward in in a diagonal or swept back wing configuration. The current configuration looks kind of wimpy or half assed, in my opinion. (I'm sure some Brit will say it's elegantly understated)
The original HST trains. Their original livery/color schemes of the power cars looked kind of tacky to me. They didn't blend in well with the rest of the train. One solid color scheme looks a lot better, at least on something that's a fixed formation train anyway
The Ivatt Atlantics, - a small, cramped cab without any side windows tacked on behind a long fat boiler as a seeming afterthought. I dislike the Great Western "Cities" class (City of Truro) for much the same reason (a small cramped windowless cab) Plus I like to actually see the driving wheels and, the engines were kind of stubby looking
The P2 locomotive, like the one that's being built in Britain. I don't care for the "squished in" smoke deflectors.
The current Flying Scotsman. I don't like the current narrow protruding German style smoke deflectors. They look like blinders on a horse (iron horse?) I think the original Flying Scotsman with the apple green livery and without the smoke deflectors was a handsome engine.
I kind of like the Belgian Atlantics with the stripes running the length of the engine and tender, kind of like the Coronation Scot, I think they look like good, solid machines, sleek but ruggedly handsome, a little unorthodox, but in an interesting sort of way.

You know how I really feel about streamliners as well?
They're overrated! i know I'm gonna get hated for saying that, but it's my own opinion. I never really understood why people think streamliners are the best locomotives around. They're not all that great or admiring to me.

It's odd but the #1 "ugliest" is so homely that it actually looks cute because it makes me chuckle.😂 Needlass to say that I'm glad someone was so thoughtful to have preserved one for future viewing. It kinda reminds me of a cabbage patch doll head i found that is puffy in its mouth and cheeks.

The Belgian type 12 of 1939 shown here is not ugly imo, just weird.
You have to check out the type 12 of 1888, yes there was a type 12 built earlier, but these were out of service in 1939 so the class number was used again.
That is absolutely the most hideous steam locomotive in my opinion, just search for "État Belge type 12" to find pictures.
But as for New Zealand, the rebuilt DG class were an eyesore as well, while the unrebuilt DG and DH classes were good looking locomotives.

I'm mainly of a Subway guy but most of these sorta look weird or funny. NYCT actually had a weird but awesome looking train called the R40 Slant, introduced in 1967-1968 these were known for their Slanted Front Ends as a way to make them "futuristic".

You may do a follow-up with EMUs or nearly-ugliest locomotives.
    Worthy candidtes:
    2TE116 (Soviet Union)
DD51 (Japan) google side pictures, because front looks pretty standard
    GP20 (USA) too long hood
type 6Dh (Poland) this modification of type 6D (PKP: SM42) is "streamlined" for shunting duties
    EMUs:
    ED72Ac (Poland) nicknamed "chomik" ("hamster")
    E4 (Japan)
    E5 (Japan)
E6 (Japan) you can do those three as they're similar in design and E5 and E6 sets are made to operate together
    N700 and its derivatives (Japan/RoC)
Pesa Elf II (Poland) this very specific variant with ugly front.
Konstal 102N (Poland) a streetcar. Not to be mistaken with 102Na, the front-swapped version
Konstal 4N (Poland) two-axle streetcar, IMO not that bad, but you might think it's too long for a two-axle streetcar. 5N - narrow-gauge version 4ND/5ND - passive trailers standard/narrow-gauge respectively
Talgo 350 aka RENFE Class 102 (Spain) Multipla on rails

I’m not here to disagree or dispute your choices. My pick of “ugly” locomotives include the entire group of road switchers produced by EMD, GE, Alco and similar types. I’m not saying they were never successful because most were. They were built for practicality not beauty. As I said that’s just my opinion.

To start, the Atlantic types were gorgeous locomotives, proportionately off alittle, but ran like butter. The HUDSON THOUGH- ugly. Please. Couldn’t agree more. The reason why these two classes didn’t get preserved, was because the Mayor of Milwaukee (at the time) thought they looked like diesel loco’s - I live in Milwaukee and have known this sad fact for years.

    • @yankinga

I get this two-cabs complaint from my English friend all time.
Especially in the early days, diesel locomotives in the US, Canada and Mexico were seldom dispatched as single units , because of the tonnage of trains and the terrain they encountered in the three countries.
Running multiple unit locomotive consists, with a cab unit facing in each direction, rendered the second cab superfluous and an unnecessary first cost abs ongoing maintenance item in the eyes of North American railroad management.

A couple of my own nominations, both from the Great Western Railway:
3901 class 2-6-2T - just a Dean Goods with a couple of rectangular tanks awkwardly slapped onto it.
2602 'Kruger' class - the GWR had a lot of attractive, well-proportioned 4-6-0 designs. This was not one of them.

ČSD had some quite questionable designs too, namely the T 478 (both the .1/.2 design 'Bardotka' and the .3/.4 design 'Brejlovec') and the S.489.0 'Laminátka'.
Deutsche Reichsbahn Class 119 'Submarine' is also worth mentioning.

However my I suggest that you keep videos like this down to about ten minutes max, Give a brief description, then onto the next example.
