Tank engines have acceleration while tender engines have top speed and that's why E2 and 14XX both have a head start
It's not a general truth. 1400 class was a branch line passenger steamer, while E2 is a shunter with a great starting traction. Tank engines was for 2-way operating, like 342 class, and her ancestor, the TV. class, which was both Praire type locos. Tender locomotives was for mainline operation with more weight per axis (14 tons).

The E2 started off think a rocket but then fell behind within like no more than 10 seconds. That’s impressive. Especially for it took on against the mallard and the flying Scotsman
Wow. The E2 did great. Taking the lead and first and later beating the Dutchess of Hamaltin. Not bad for a Tank Engine.
Well, the E2 tank engine didn't win, but it didn't lose either. They're not built for speed or strength, but at least they're still good for working around the shunting yards.
Re-watching this video three years later noticing that the last engine was Oliver. Probably one of my favorite engines in Thomas and friends as a whole
Amazing. So wasn't expecting the City of Truro to go ahead...until the very end. And it's one streamlined engine in first but one streamlined engine in last! 😲

Jonah G the difference being that the A4 class was built as a streamliner, whereas the Duchess class had the streamlining added over it, hence why nowadays it looks like a ‘normal’ locomotive.

@@choochoo1220 to be fair i feel part of that was on the breaking as right at the end you can see mellard breaking a decent bit later and the last engine in either ran out of steam or must have had horrible breaks as my god it took ages to fully stop

i think the stream lining never helped it just made the loco heavier meaning it slowed it down instead from speeding it up, if im correct truro actually was the fastest, but they never had the speed recording coach, and they had to go off the words of the drivers, then mallard come along with the coach and smashed world records

I wouldn’t say the 9F because it’s a Freight locomotive and it can only go about 60mph, so, I think between City of Truro & Flying Scotsman.
Actually on a passenger train Evening Star performed admirably topping out at about 90 mph burning less coal than a Class 7MT Britannia would have been expected to burn.
But 9Fs did Freight services didn’t they? So how can the Evening Star go 90mph?
That's a bit like asking how an A4 can do freight services if they are passenger locomotives, they can just do both things. Btw the A4s did do freight in war time and BR service. The 9fs were just fast, also they were powerful so it's no problem accelerating.

Should have used the Bossman Games Black 5, as per reality they top out at 60mph
so we learned that the bigger engines gain speed slower but they are more fast. this is why the 14xx and e2 nearly won. but they already reached the mac speed.

I believe the 9F is going to win, because I just watched the strength challenge between the 9F and the BigBoy, and although the 9F lost, she still pushed 80 mph while fully loaded. I think she's got the power to win this.
