The British Invasion: British Engines on American Soil

  • Considering many people have asked me to make a Top 10 Extinct American Steam Locomotive list, and while reviewing multiple locomotives as candidates for Remarkable Engines, I eventually came up with an idea that would cover a rarely discussed topic: British engines and railcars on U.S. soil. This video doesn't just include visiting engines such as Flying Scotsman or the Royal Scot, but as well as those which stayed in the States, and were imported directly from Great Britain from the earliest days of railroading. Through my research, I found that there is a surprisingly large amount of steam engines from the first years of American railroading that were imported directly from Britain, as well as famous and small engines alike that attended major American railway exhibitions. With all of that said, sit back and enjoy this cultural exchange of locomotives!

As a British railfan in Canada I really enjoyed this. Since you mentioned LNER no. 4489 "Dominion of Canada" in the Canadian Railway Museum in Montreal, I'd like to point out that they also have London Brighton & South Coast Railway 0-6-0T no. 54 "Waddon." I think it came over at the same time as 4489 but I'm not sure.

Waddon arrived in Montreal in September of 1963. Dominion of Canada was not withdrawn from service until 1965 and I believe it arrived in Canada towards the end of 1966.

Your pronunciation of Duke of Gloucester made me chuckle. But still a very well researched video and I enjoyed it.
A fun fact: The Duchess of Hamilton engine, when returned to the UK, it was 'rebuilt'. All of the air smooth casings removed to make maintenance simpler and easier. It spent many decades in this form, long into its preservation days. When it was finally withdrawn, it was then sent to the National Railway Museum in York and the decision was made to re-install its air smooth casings. So now we see it in its original form. Maybe, one day, just maybe we might actually see it return to steam in its original form. I truly would love to see that!

Don't forget about the NSWGR AD60 class garratt. It's nowhere near as powerful as a Union Pacific big boy, but it is an example of how British steam locomotive designers could build an articulated work horse of their own for heavy freight trains.

Apparently the identities of 6100 'Royal Scot' and 6152 'The King's Dragoon Guardsman' were never swapped back when the real 6152 returned home. So that means the preserved 46100 is actually 46152. I don't remember where I heard that story, and I certainly can't verify if it's true or not.
I find it so odd that British engines ever visited the US; they just look so out of place amongst the bigger American engines.
As for that LIRR M7 tank engine (sorry, I meant LSWR), she is one of two M7s that survived into preservation. The other one is LSWR No. 245, which is part of the National Collection in York.

Had to send away to the U.K. for them, and all proudly say "Made in Britain", so I guess I'm carrying on the tradition in miniature.

In a vaguely similar (miniature) vein, as a 3-rail O-Gauge operator/collector here in the US, I once bought a Lionel Hogwarts Express set, then added six more coaches to make the consist resemble the railtours pulled by _Olton Hall_ in the UK, but as a _Flying Scotsman_ -esque 'what if' train.
As if that wasn't enough, not long ago, I acquired through chance discoveries, a number of Lima O scale UK/EU rolling stock, including two UK Mark-1 coaches (LMS + Great Western), five UIC coaches (DB, SBB/CFF, 3xSNCF) and a couple of freight wagons. Just this week bought from Ebay three more Mk1 coaches in LMS livery and a 4-axle tank wagon.
Why do this? Mostly to present the oddball sight of UK/EU rolling stock operating alongside my more typical US 3-rail 'O' trains. Of course shipping from the UK is just cost-prohibitive (often costing much more than the selling price of individual cars) so I have to limit my efforts to examples already in the US. There is the twin issues of incompatible couplers and these cars being made for 2-rail track, but I have the means to overcome those.

Near impossible for normal service US or Australian standard gauge steam to run in the UK. This is due to the UK structure/loading gauge being so much more restricted in height and width compared to Australia and especially the USA.
Those US designs that did run in the UK were specially built to be smaller to fit the height and width restrictions. From the 1890s Lovett Eames 4-2-2 then the GNR, MR and GCR US built 2-6-0s ordered around 1900 at a time of locomotive shortages.
Lots of US locomotives built for export to Australia. The most accessible are the Baldwin design 2-6-2T 2 ft 6 in gauge locomotives used on the Puffing Billy railway to this day. Although the Baldwin built pair were worn out and scrapped by the 1920s. The locally built versions from the VR Newport Workshops have quite a few still running providing a daily service.

The first Beyer Garratt articulated locomotive was built for the Tasmanian Government Railways.
Beyer Peacock in the UK saved it from scrap as it was historically inoortant and after many decades on static display it is in service again in the UK :
      th-cam.com/video/FXCe3TQZi8s/w-d-xo.html
Although the films of it running in the UK rarely mention the Australian history of the locomotive
There are photos of the first Commonwealth Railways NSU diesel running on test in the UK when built.

      @JoeK25301 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Pensyfan19 They did go into administration, but didn’t last long enough I presume. I know this, because I know someone who works for Network Rail in Bletchley as a signaller and there aren’t any trains running on the Marston Vale line, due to the bankruptcy of Vivarail; a line that I also need to go to Northampton Town from Kettering, Northamptonshire. So I now rely on long distance buses now. London and Northwestern Railway (L.N.R.) relies on Vivarail, as Vivarail owns the trains and L.N.R. only operates them.
