We can't tell for sure. Cops need to take weapon threats very seriously, whether fake or not. Consider that they did end up calling their supervisor for a reason, but it does strike me odd that no one thought about checking the cameras, perhaps no one else knew?

They didn’t need to investigate his claims in their eyes. Dude still had a weapon on him. What would they do if he actually did threaten to attack her? They just ask him hey man, do you have a knife on you/ did you threaten her? Oh you didn’t? Alright you’re free to go. Y’all are ridiculous trying to blame the cops in this story. It’s the woman’s fault, not theirs. They found a weapon on a dude after being told he threatened someone with a weapon, they just supposed to let him go because he said it’s not true? Literally not their fault, it’s just their job.

They hear stories about identity theft, and get the notion that anyone with your email address can log into your email account, because they simply don't understand. When you run into someone like this, your best answer is to explain it to them as simply as possible, and give them a few tips about how to choose a strong password. Present them with ways that they can GENUINELY protect themselves from identity theft. You may make a friend that way. And always remember: "ignorant" doesn't mean "stupid." Ignorance is fixable.

But the problem is that they didn't bother to even ask OP what his side was, they were completely content with throwing him in a cell based upon what the woman said alone. That is NOT what their job is. They're required to get all testimonies from the people involved, not to mention, the first thing they should have done regardless is check the camera footage. There is zero reason for anybody to defend them. It seems as if just because OP had a puny little pocket knife, yall count that as evidence that the cops' piss poor attempt at their job was justifiable.

The first thing that a person accused of a violent crime is definitely to detain him and they did so. Keeping the gun on him after he was disarmed and in cuffs was excessive and paranoid but cops that aren't paranoid tend to become dead cops.
They hadn't asked OP his side YET, but they hadn't started to leave the scene either. They didn't throw him in jail. They were getting all the testimonies. They were dealing with all the added personnel as they came in. They were still in the process of sorting it out.
Puny little pocket knives are still knives and the fact he had one on him lends credence to the statement "I was threatened with a knife". They were perfectly within their rights to keep him detained while sorting it out. He's a guard and probably big and strong. They were correct in not taking chances.

This reminds me of my own story.
I used to help my friend read water meters for our water district. He started his own company and sometimes found himself understaffed so I'd get a days pay and he'd get work done. Win win.
So I went to this one ladies house, and I'm wearing a big orange vest that says WATER on the back. And we have sheets of paper that tell us where to find the meter. Well hers wasn't where it was supposed to be and this woman had fulled her yard with old junker cars. Trash, and rusty bits so I didn't fancy crawling around to see if she covered the little in-ground door that houses the meter (paper said it wasn't a house attachment and should be in the front yard.)
Usually I tried to avoid knocking on doors and bothering people but after having a look around I paused to consider knocking to ask where the meter was because I just couldn't find it.
I looked across the yard to this house which had dark windows on a Monday afternoon and figured nobody was home, shrugged, marked down I couldn't find the meter, and turned to leave.
Thats when Karen came bursting out the front door, running down the driveway and screaming at me. She's shouting that I'm a theif who's casing her house and bla bla bla. I just calmly tell her I'm from water and power here to check her water meter. And here's the kicker, not only does this woman not know where her own water meter is, she doesn't know WHAT it is. 🤦
She demands to see my "license" to do what I'm doing. Spoiler, not every job has a "license," and goes on and on and on.
I'm just like, "well if you don't know where your meter is and you clearly don't want me here... " and start filling out a card. She looks confused and I hand her the door hanger we leave in some neighborhoods where the water meter is in the basement. It has all the information that I was here, tried to do my job, and what numbers to call. It also has the name of the water district.
"Go ahead and find it, then call your water company to let them know what it says so you don't get overcharged. Bye " Then I go to leave as she's standing there still trying to argue I should have some form of identification.
It seemed to click that I wasn't a theif as she tried to stop me from leaving saying "I could call my husband to see where it is..." And I'm like "nope, you don't want me here, I already spent more time than I should, bye." And I left and privately cried a bit as the adrenaline wore off because I really don't handle confrontation well.
TLDR; woman with nothing of value in her garbage dumb of a yard "protects" her trash by making me cry.

Sir? We're not open yet, how did you get in?" and then he turned around and I saw his face and I turned bright red. We both laughed about it. I miss that man, he was a great boss to work for.

The cops were absolutely in the wrong. Not for pulling a gun on an unarmed man, not for cuffing him, not for detaining him.
They're in the wrong for failure to investigate. Detain the potential attacker, *then* investigate the claims. As far as the story read, OP never even got to give his side of the story. His friend was the one who had to give it. And the officers hadn't even looked for cameras, had they?
The proper way to have handled it would have been to *calmly* ask OP to put his hands behind his back, cuff, and detain him. Once detained, begin gathering *both* sides of the story. Then make a quick precursory glance to see if there was any kind of surveillance or cctv system. Upon spotting it, determine the PoC for the building and request cctv logs.
No gun drawn, no extra life-threatening situations, and no violation of due process.
Instead, the cops believed her because she was a woman and that was that. Reverse the roles and there would have been a much different story.

Get who the head office sent arrested. I'd almost bet that she hadn't been in that position very long and/or the power just went to her head.
As for how the cops acted, they may have seen her there before, but he was new, so they might have assumed that she was telling the truth. They do take weapon accusations seriously, so I can't fault them for cuffing him, but went a bit far by keeping a gun pointed at him.
Another thing to remember is that this happened at the height of the # metoo and the 'believe all women' movements. This story shows where and how these things can be misused, even if they are, in spirit, good ideas.

We had been in town and wanted to go swimming, in early spring, overcast sky, still a bit cold, and we had no swimwear on us. We still went swimming. Came out, dried ourselves off on our clothes, as we swam in our underwear, and left our shoes off so the sand would shake off when they dried. Walking through town to get to our bus stop, it started to rain, so we looked even more dishevelled. Some people stopped us and offered us money, we did not know why till it dawned on us how we must have looked. We said no to the money and tried to explain we had just been swimming, but they gave us money anyway. Late 1980s.

Hey Fluff, another great video with excellent stories. As for the last story, I can relate because my parents were a lot like Mike's mom. They took in my uncle, my mom's younger brother, when he was thrown out at 15 by their adopted mother. My parents had us kids, .gov older brother, myself, and my younger sister, and we were all under at 5. They helped him finish school, get his long haul trucker license, and took care of our two cousins while he worked after his 1st wife ran off with a guy she met in a bar. Then, a few years later, my mom's oldest sister came and dumped her 5 kids at our house. My Dad was a career Navy Master Chief, and we lived in a 3 bedroom apartment on base. So it was cramped to start, but my parents made it work by giving the oldest daughter the small bedroom, and my sister and cousin got to share the little bit larger room. (It was my brother's and my room btw.) Then the living room became the 5 boys room which included my seriously sick/handicapped cousin who was 10 like myself. He had gone cancer in his hip, and yes, he was in full remission by the time their mother came back for them 3 years later. Turns out their father went to prison for 20 years for embezzlement of $250,000 and his wife got 5 years, but served 3. My parents made it work for all of us kids, and their mom was released so she could take back custody. We are still close, and she divorced her crook of a husband. Turns out he had her open bank accounts in her name to hide the money, and that's why she went to prison. So while our parents were not perfect, they had big hearts, and worked hard to take care of not just us, but other family members, and friends in need.

    • @margretrosenberg420
      @margretrosenberg420 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As do men.
Women AREN'T instantly believable, or instantly believed. In most situations a man's word will be taken over a woman's, automatically. However, when the police get a report of someone having been threatened, by someone larger than herself (which is usually the case in a "he said, she said" situation), they're pretty much obliged to side with the potential victim.
It hasn't always been this way. A few decades ago I lived in a duplex, with a female friend in the other half of the duplex, and I would regularly hear her boyfriend hitting her. I talked to her about it, and finally got her permission to call the cops the next time it happened. And do you know how the cops handled it? Since the boyfriend had left when I yelled that I was calling the cops they couldn't immediately arrest him. They could, however, have taken his work address - my friend offered to give it to them - but for some reason they decided that woudn't work. Instead, the most important thing on their minds was to give my friend a lecture about how SHE was at fault for not having called them sooner. Do you think she EVER called the cops for help again? I don't.
There have been a lot of stories about women who called the police to report abuse and were dismissed by the cops because the man came across as a good, dependable man, and shortly after that the woman was murdered by him. As a result, the cops in most jurisdictions are now required to take these reports seriously.

I told her that I’m not giving out my personal # and, I couldn’t help her from my home but, anyone here working could help her. To her this was unexceptional and started cursing at me. So, I just said goodbye and hung up. I put a red flag on her account with a brief description. She immediately called back which my manager answered and, told her her money is being refunded but, she is permanently band from the theater. He put this notice on her account.

I often secretly hope the lovely humans in these stories actually read/hear them from the POV of the poor soul who had to deal with their logic/lack there-of. I also hope they read the comment sections and feel the burn.

Story 2: Karens thinking that OP is an employee and Karens who don't think OP is an employee
this feels kind of like Bizarro's Logic in DC Comics: sometimes Bizarro is friendly to Superman, othertimes he's Superman's enemy. Sometimes Bizarro is Superman's friend, so Bizarro must kill Superman (Bizarro logic is bizarre for a reason).

I know. One does have to wonder what goes through the mind of a Karen, just because it never makes any sense to anyone but her.

Few weeks ago at my Call Center Job: "Thank you for calling so and so this is M speaking. To whom do I have the pleasure of speaking with?"
Karen: "I can assure you it will not be a pleasure! So where are you located?"
    Me: "Kansas"
K: "So you aren't from Jamaicaaaaaa or the Philippiiiiiiines?"
Me: *click* Yeah I don't deal with that.

I’ve tried to explain to mom multiple times upon times that if SHE calls a legitimate number (as opposed to one she’s received a call from) it’s fine to give her info to them.

Usually. People can and have spoofed real sites and given false phone numbers to intercept calls. Less likely than if they call you but it can still happen. People suck.

    • @bann5777

Not true. Scammers will create numbers that are just 1 number different than the legit business and plaster that in the Google search results. As well as make fake websites with their numbers that are soooo similar, most people don't notice. I have seen websites like Amazons or wallmart and they pay to get them high views on Google searches, hoping people won't notice, and they often don't. Scammers are evil but not dumb.
