Seeing how well it does in the dust test here, lowers some of my fears about it though. It is still a bit worrisome to take it out of the bag and see there is still grinder dust on the magnetic spots though.
Im painter and carpenter and I do work on construction projects every day in mega dusty environment , fold 4 is my fourth fold from Samsung and all of them have with me at my work non stop. I can tell you that I wash my fold 2 in wash machine, fold 3 landed deep into beach sand and never any of them fail me even once. All gets scratches on the hinge and that's all. Most complains i heard on internet comes from people who didn't have this phone. If you really wory I suggest to buy spigen armor pro case which seals phone from every direction.
Lmfao! Im a welder too, been ruining phones every year or two. Metal getting into speakers, grinding dusk in-between the case, scratching it to sh1t. I want one of these, but it wouldn't last a week.

@@죽은_시민의_사회 missed my point entirely. Same trend can be seen throughout the line. I really do have to say thank you for these videos, Zack. Since there's so much overlap for smartphone internals and performance, a lot of my purchases are based on your tests! I loved the idea of folding phones from the start, but didn't end up going for one until I saw the flip 3 survive all the dirt and gravel you put it through (I took mine to the beach and the hinge is still a whisper). The inner screen has some minor damage, but thanks to your videos I knew what I was getting into with the softer inner screen and to be perfectly honest the thing has exceeded my expectations in terms of staying alive despite my daily abuse. SO I guess my point is this: Thank you for making all of this info freely available for so many years. Even if a particular phone isn't the most durable, it's really nice to know in advance exactly what I'm getting into, and not end up with a bending iPhone 6.
What impresses me most about this phone (I just got it in July) is the battery time. I tried its battery from 100% and streamed high-quality series and movies for over 10 hours before it went dead. Ofc it was not high in light but it wasn't low either. The picture in Avatar 2 was stunning quality, and I had a hard time believing this was a so good Tablet in a phone, or is it the other way around? Amazing for travel too :) If someone had told me in '72 that some like this TV would come in pocket size and that it could call the world and have all info at my fingertips in secs, I wonder what I would have said? The dude is crazy? Folding small high-color TV...??? Naaaaaa... Get out of here!!!
I feel like their unbreakable claim is to steer away from a lot of owners claiming these foldables are "unusable" after the phone is used heavily for over a year.
People in here praise Samsung way too much for this phone while this phone isn't really impressive in term of durabilty. This phone still use the same plastic screen. No matter what kind of flexing plastic screen it has, plastic screen is still plastic and it still scratched easily.
Despite the worse case scenarios on a fold. I had my Z Fold 2 since September 2020 and has never failed me. 💯 I've ran while it rained, dropped it with and without a case and neither the interior or exterior screen ever cracked or have any sort of scratches! Now with the Z Fold 4 I'm hoping it lasts me until the 7th or possibly the 8th gen. If they continue to thrive 👀
I actually have the OG fold. Got a little bit of water splashed on the inner display, then boom sent to Samsung. However in terms of surviving drops, it was a beast (with the protector it came with). I dropped it at least 100 times, in concrete, tile, carpet, and wood, with no cracks on the outer display or inner/hinge operation damage. The inner display stopped working however, when I launched myself of my electric board. The phone flew nearly 40 feet in front of me, shedding its protector pieces along the way, but no cracks on the outer display or problems operating it.
@@paper8nintendo bro props for buying the OG fold. I could never own that version for so many reasons 😅 I wouldn't mind it but the size of the small exterior screen would be a hassle for me. The fold 2 wasn't bad but wasn't perfect either exterior screen wise. These extra 3mms make a difference. Are you trading in your OG Fold?
Neither should it fail in barely 2 years old , my galaxy S8+ is well over 5 years old and still in pristine condition and I’ve used the hell out of it , if your fold lasts for for 3 years without being to the repair shop i will be utterly amazed, and lets not forget , to wear a phone out you actually have to use it .
I've got myself an ROG6 end of last year... last for 3 months and in repair for 6 months for a motherboard problem, so last week, I've got the bad news that it died. And with additional money, I've got myself a Z Fold 4. Been using it for a week now.
It’s the same improvement’s each year as any other brand. All phones are just bricks with a little better camera, chipset and displays each year. Same for any brand.
Good to see how well the new hinge design holds up to that level of abuse. Ditching the radial gears seems to have really improved its ability to resist dust ( and sand and rocks)
You gotta do the bend test vertically/horizontally as well to show how it fares when open. I'm unsure how to differentiate between the two. I'm curious how the spine holds up then, let alone the screen.
Zack's sarcasm level is unmatched, "It appears apple has trained consumers to be happy about getting nothing new","yeah it's a little soft on the inside but aren't we all","i think it's the iphone 10 version 4" 🤣🤣
@@RamlyJer at least he wouldn’t be able to fool us like with the fold because it will actually have some differences unlike what Samsung does for the past 3 years
I actually think the design is fine, no need to change something that works :) Personally I like the Fold line because the foldable screen tech is fascinating to me. And while the screen *is* soft and relatively easily damaged, their engineers really did their best to protect it when it's not in use! What's keeping me from buying one is a) the price and b) the almost square aspect ratio. Since most of the videos I watch are in 16:9 this thing us useless to me as a "tablet". I'd just get the Tab S8 Ultra instead to be totally honest with you! Which is a device that actually fought back during your testing, so I guess that almost earns it a spot in my backpack 😅
so i measured. the biggest youtube videos get is 6.5 inches hinge horizontal. 5.5 inches if its hinge vertical. my s22 ultra didnt display videos that big because of the screen ratio being 19.3:9
My major reasons are 1 yea the soft screen, i would scratch that so quickly. 2 i think when folded its kind ugly and clunky. 3 probably the biggest reason the creasing that happens in the middle that these tests don’t show. I kinda just accepted that basically having a pocket sized glass rectangle that doesn’t fold is just a better idea. Maybe when holographic or projection tech hits the phone market we can have bigger screens
As a fold 3 owner, this makes me wince so bad. 😂 I don't baby my phone.. But watching it put through such extremes whilst he gently talks asmr vibes to us is definitely difficult to watch to such an expensive device! Good to see I don't need to upgrade for another year though! Thanks Zack!
I also skipped the 4 holding on to my 3 which was replaced at 6 months old due to bad pixels on the inner screen plus I've got Cares+ on it. I did, however, bite on the GW5 pro.
@@puffnstuff12 Currently about to be on my third fold 3 (this one will be refurbished). First one after 6 months the inner screen started coming apart, even though I barely used it..and then my 2nd one, I dropped it accidentally like a couple of inches and the whole front screen cracked sadly. Considering doing one of the Black fri deals and switching to the s22 ultra, especially since it has a better battery and cameras. And then going back to the fold series hopefully when the 5th comes out (If its a better upgrade then the Fold4).
@@themusiclover8440 I considered going to a S22 ultra myself but decided to stick with the fold a little bit longer. I'm hopeful that this second one will last me until I'm ready to trade for something newer.
I'm surprised more people aren't shocked at how easily the inner screen scratches! At level 2 you can permanently damage your inner screen if your finger nails are slightly long that's absolutely ridiculous for a phone this expensive!
That’s why I’m staying away from foldables right now until the tech improves for the inner screens. I almost switched from an iPhone this year, but I'm glad I decided to stay with Apple for the time being.
I just got done watching the OG fold durability test and then this one popped up, uploaded 6 minutes ago. The fold 4 is my first foldable device and so far I love it. I've had it for almost a week now and I've had zero issues with it. I can't wait to see what they do with the fold 5 :)
As long as there are 0 issues with the screen protector separating from the display and 0 issues in more extreme weather conditions... It may very well be my first foldable as well... or perhaps the razr 2022 is an option as well
can you make a video about Z Fold 4 with the following scenarios: 1) Driving around the city and your Z fold 4 acting as a GPS device in your car 2) Use your Z fold 4 to trade stocks 3) Watching news on Z fold 4 for a few hours at work. 4) Playing Games 5) Video Chat 6) Taking portrait photo, videos etc.
The fact that the fold 4 survives the bend test despite being a more fragile device is awe-inspiring. This sets a high standard that regular slabs should never ever fail this test since it is widely regarded as more durable but still happens with a particular brand. Samsung's focus on durability over form and aesthetics certainly paid off although the barrier of entry is still rather high.
The slightly smaller frame actually seems like it might be a pretty noticeable improvement. It also looks like the seam is even less noticeable than the last one which is nice. But I'm still not spending $1800 for a phone I can scratch with my fingernail.
It's a screen protector on the inside screen that can be replaced by Samsung repair service. Or if you're brave enough you can replace it yourself once it's scratched.
Except my Z Fold 3 inner screen survived much better than any other flagship I had. The rest had scratches at the 6 to 9 months mark, while this one had none (ironically my outer screen does haha)
@@Junispro31 even the Fold 3 withstood pretty high finger pressure and some fingernail pressure, and the plastic would bounce back after a little while. Really impressive design

Hey Zack. I noticed in this video during the bend test, there was one dimension that you skipped bending from. Does it still survive the bend test if you flip the phone 90 degrees while open? That is, so that you are bending more like you would a normal phone and not like trying to bend two phones away from each other.
I know of several people, myself included, who have sat on our phone thus bending it this way. The phone I am on right now as I leave this comment is actually broken because it's bent this way, although I have a feeling heat player a big part in warping my phone to look like a horizontal coma.

1st, as always an awesome video, thank you for the continued great content reviewing durability. 2nd, regarding the latest Gorilla Glass, it seems to me that advances in glass these days seem to be focused more on shatter resistance than scratch resistance. While I love the scratch testing, may I suggest adding a calibrated drop test to the mix to test shatter resistance? Perhaps a rig that puts the phone on the desk while progressively larger steel bearings are dropped from a fixed height onto the screen?
on further thought, one additional thought/request. I love your tech content, especially things like when you installed the elevator, demonstrated the stair climbing wheelchair, all the phone things, etc and am a huge fan (I literally watch your reviews before purchasing any new phone). That being said, I love your channel for TECH content, and do not come here for political commentary slipped into videos. I say this as an independent who has voted for pretty much every political party, and I split tickets all the time, so this is not an issue of me disagreeing or agreeing with your views, but rather that I (and I am sure others) enjoy this channel specifically as it is a Tech channel, and not a political one, and a place to get away from the constant bombardment of politicized content out there. I fully support your right to voice your political views, and if you were to start a new channel expressly to discuss social and political matters, I would be a subscriber for sure. I simply feel that politics has invaded every aspect of entertainment and I would rather that I can view some form of entertainment that leaves the politics behind for a few minutes. I am sure there are many people who enjoy your tech content but do not share your political views, and by expressing those in the videos, you risk alienating that part of your audience. Perhaps you may feel that is no great loss, but I feel that access to great tech information should be for all people, and not politicized. Just as a thought exercise, can you imagine if the show How It's Made inserted politics into it? Regardless of your choices in this regard, please continue to make good tech content. Thank you for hopefully taking the time to consider this input.

Nah ball bearings don't really show how a phone would do if dropped. When a phone is dropped the impact gets dispersed across the whole phone and the environment, while ball bearings would just concentrate in one specific part of the device and would drill holes into the screen instead
@@NobuNobuSimp true, it would simulate dropping on rocks or gravel, which is what has killed my wife's phone more than once. It would be a larger challenge to evenly drop a flat weight perfectly on the screen. I am sure it can be managed with some thought.
You forget that Samsung's foldable is actually more durable than a regular phone. This is partly because the hinge is made of hardened steel, which is incredibly resistant to attacks. In addition, the aluminum of Samsung's foldables is also hardened. The paint also gets scratches, but the aluminum itself is more robust. Many ordinary smartphones today are made of ultra-thin aluminum or light steel, which can easily break, especially at the point between the battery and the camera. With the exception of the main display, Samsung foldables are one of the toughest smartphones I have ever held in my hands (I am currently using the Fold 3 and will soon switch to the Fold 4)
ZFlip 4 is doing the same thing, extremely incremental improvements. Glad I sprung for the flip 3 after seeing that durability test lol, though maybe *that* one is cheaper nowadays
The interesting part about this test is that for the most part it's really durable. But some people have already gotten issues with the hinge and it getting stuck. Which is mind boggling bc it's not like they're being careless. It's like wow you survived this, but not daily use
Good to know Samsung keeps on making durable phones. Can't wait to see how the Flip 4 and the Motorola RAZR (2022 version) can handle your durability testing someday.
I'd love to see some kind of impact test in the future. I've got kids and one of my concerns is having a toy slammed into the inner screen while I'm using the device

Love the video Jerry, if you ever did a follow up it would be interesting to see how much of the damage got through the inner screen protector to the screen itself.
JerryRigEverything: I f**K it up, so you don't have to! I also love the running dialogue in the background there. I picked up a Z Flip 3 after your video on it last year, and I love it so far. I dropped it in some mud without a case on it over the winter, got all kinds of dirty. I brought it inside and (with some hesitance) ran it under the faucet for a moment or two, opening and closed it a little, dried her off and she's fine. After 1 year I need to change the stock screen protector out, the one it came with has a crack along the crease. No damage though. Great phone, in my opinion.
You allways do a "Scratch test" on the screens, but why not to include a "Break test" too? Since where i know, "Scratch" resistance and "Break" resistance are inverse proportional right? Could be interesting, just saying!

I'm not a welder but I work in a shop. If I bought a fold I would destroy it for sure in this environment.

Watching on my Fold 4, I was anxious to see how it would fare without the internal metal plate behind the inner screen. Glad to see it passed with flying colors (or should I say burned colors 😅)
Same here 😂 I see that the fold 4 is thinner than the Fold 3, so I was a bit afraid that it may bend backwards but nope!
How does the weak larger screen affect your usage of the phone? And how is the video/movie viewing experience on a square shaped display?
This made me uncomfortable to watch 😆
You should have said frying colors 😉
@@TheGamerTeo The weak inner screen affects my usage not at all. I just have to conciously know not to drop it if its opened. Much like a Nintendo DS, the device protects the inner screen by itself when closed. I watch a lot of TH-cam and the square screen does mean black bars, but coming from an iPhone 11, the black bar screen is still bigger than my iPhone was, and looks way better. Flex mode is also great for watching content without holding the phone. Gaming with Emulators is amazing, especially with the square screen for 4:3 and DS games. My favorite thing so far is the Kindle app. I own and activly use my kindle paperwhite all the time, but havnt touched it since I got the Fold since the screen is bigger, crisper and now more convenient.
The 5 just came out R.I.P lol😂😂
I feel like their unbreakable claim is to steer away from a lot of owners claiming these foldables are "unusable" after the phone is used heavily for over a year.
I have had the Z flip since launch, as well as the Razr 5G and the z fold 3. My only issues have been the screen protectors peeling up
People in here praise Samsung way too much for this phone while this phone isn't really impressive in term of durabilty.

Personally I like the Fold line because the foldable screen tech is fascinating to me.

I got the Fold4 and watching YT works great. Especially watching a video and reading comments at the same time
@@MrMiirzaa :D
My major reasons are 1 yea the soft screen, i would scratch that so quickly. 2 i think when folded its kind ugly and clunky. 3 probably the biggest reason the creasing that happens in the middle that these tests don’t show. I kinda just accepted that basically having a pocket sized glass rectangle that doesn’t fold is just a better idea. Maybe when holographic or projection tech hits the phone market we can have bigger screens

I'm surprised more people aren't shocked at how easily the inner screen scratches! At level 2 you can permanently damage your inner screen if your finger nails are slightly long that's absolutely ridiculous for a phone this expensive!

JERRY RIG EVERYTHING.

Hey Zack. I noticed in this video during the bend test, there was one dimension that you skipped bending from. Does it still survive the bend test if you flip the phone 90 degrees while open? That is, so that you are bending more like you would a normal phone and not like trying to bend two phones away from each other.
it wont bend that way in daily use anyway

@@jg8263 Respectfully, I think you're overreacting. I think his commentary about being "dirtier than a politician stealing classified documents" is pretty harmless.
You give me goose bumps with all that scratching

The interesting part about this test is that for the most part it's really durable. But some people have already gotten issues with the hinge and it getting stuck. Which is mind boggling bc it's not like they're being careless. It's like wow you survived this, but not daily use
