  • Where someone starts is only a small part of where they will go. Similar to how it takes several people and many organizations working together to discover an element, it takes a lifetime of experiences to chart your unique path knowing that credentials don't determine your destiny. Clarice Phelps is a research scientist at Oak Ridge National Lab who previously served in the United States Navy as an NCO in the Naval Nuclear Power Program. With a combined 16 years of experience, she has worked on the separation, purification and processing of radioisotopes for private and commerial entities. Clarice is dedicated to STEM initiatives and ensuring that access to STEM education is available to under-represented communities. In 2019, she was recognized by the IUPAC's (Internation Union Of Pure and Applied Chemistry) Periodic Table of Young Chemists for her commitment, public engagement, and being an advocate for diversity. She is the first African- American woman to be involved with the discovery of an element, Tennessine. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

WOW! Someone informed me they saw you on TED TALKS 2 months ago. That was an inspirational speech. Im glad you found your niche and with the attitude you posses more positive avenues will appear to you. I hope your family is doing well tell them i said hi. Congratulations and the concept of being a team is very important. Even Patrick Mahomes throws interceptions and the rest of the team picks up the slack. Thats why the Chiefs are winners

@Clarice Phelps I don't know if you'll see this, but you are an inspiration! I'm in eighth grade right now, and we had a choose an African American who's resilient, and I wanted to do something related to chemistry, because I absolutely love it! I was so happy to come across you for my project! I really enjoyed your TedTalk, it took of a little of the stress I feel about my grades. Thank you for all you have done for the science field, I hope you have a great rest of your career!

@Clarice Phelps I teach high school Chemistry at a small school in deep South Texas. My students are always in awe when I tell them about Tennessine and how you helped discover it. I can't wait to share this video with them; I know it will inspire so many!
