- A kilogram of jasmine oil can cost $5,000. But to get that small amount of oil, harvesters need to handpick over 5,000 jasmine buds. Once the flower blooms, producers in India quickly process it into one of the priciest absolute oils in the world. Today, jasmine oil is an integral ingredient in many luxury perfumes, including Dior's J'Adore, Guerlain's Shalimar, and Chanel No. 5. So, what does jasmine oil smell like? And why is it so expensive?

Because they add value to the raw material. India doesn't have a good fragrance maker - a brand which people will be willing to pay extraordinary amount.
It's because French luxury goods are top of the world, it's a matter of prestige and luxury to buy them...
@@makanimemafia9021 Indian people have a stereotype - that foreign items are better and more valuable. Even if we had a luxury perfume brand and if you'd ask any Indian either that or Dior, they'll choose Dior.
Btw India already has its "own" perfume called Attar, which is scented oil, and this flower's fragrance is very popular among others.
I used to play in madurai fields during childhood and trust me the smell of these flowers takes to heaven literally
Here in the Philippines, many houses have the jasmine growing on their fence. Just passing by is heaven enough for me, so I can only imagine how much more to be in a field.

I bought a small bottle of pure Jasmine oil when I went to Kerala on school trip. That little bottle kept smelling amazing for years. Because it was pure oil only dabbing a little bit on skin was enough so it lasted for a long time. Ahhh the memories 😊

Im an American of Tamil heritage and I was lucky that my father kept a jasmine bush in our yard. Till today its one of my most favorite fragrances, I wish my whole house could smell like Jasmine all the time.

U can pour water in a vessel and float some Jasmine flowers on top in ur home...or maybe u can just leave a garland of Jasmine in ur room ,..

I used to have a jasmine bush in my old house's frontyard. Once they bloom I'd pick some and put them in a bowl of water and place it in my room as an air freshener lol. From where I'm from, legends say jasmine attract (don't quote me on this) a female ghost, I don't know if this is true although it is true if you suddenly smell jasmine in a place where there are no jasmine nearby. But I don't really care since I love the smell and I know I have the physical flowers nearby, so the smell didn't just appear out of thin air.

Jasiminium sambac is the Philippines' national flower. The flower is easy to propagate from cutting and the smell is humble yet divine.

Jasminium Sambac is not uniquely Philippines. It's native habitat range from South Asia to South East Asia. To call it a National flower would be incorrect.
Not special occasions, it's like roses in the West. Men buy jasmine flowers stitched together like a braid for their partners. It's like a romantic thing to do.
Came to say this. Also i use to make 'gajra' for my mother when i was a kid.
It's not a romantic thing but a garland which women do wear at the time of festivals which can be put into "special occasions".
Of course men can gift their wives this but that doesn't mean it's always romantic. Definitely not like the rose

I think when hinduism and budhism spread from india to rest asean countries it spread concept namaste - hand folding, culture religion ramayan, mahabharat, buddhism, Cuisine and temple practice etc aka leaving shoes out, jasmine, incense burning
For me, jasmine itself is versatile. It could be used in any smooth smelling perfumes. It has a distinct aroma but not too overpowering. IMO, it's best used as middle or base notes.
And the best thing about jasmine? Both men and women perfumes can incorporate it in their blend.

The actual manufacturing cost of perfume is ~$2.00.
The packaging, marketing and bottle, each alone cost more than the perfume itself.
It's the chemists who came up with the perfect unique blend of notes to be marketable + the expensive packaging

Or playful and fun and happy afternoons. Scent is like a fantasy and escape and adventure, we associate it with nostalgia or imagination. It does a lot for a woman.
It grows all over the place in South India, it even grows as a vine on my bedroom window and acts as a natural room freshner whenever the wind blows!

For many Indonesians (South-east Asia), jasmine (or melati in Indonesian) is typically linked for supernatural activities and rituals. As little kids, we have been told that ghosts appears when we smelled jasmine. So naturally, we will most likely pass this scent no matter how bougee the perfume is 🤣🤚🏻

Jasmine is used in the hair as decorations in women's hairs at daytime. So, strong Jasmine smell at the dead of the night means some ghost (probably a female one) is out there, looking for you. 😂😂

I’m sadly allergic to Jasmine and I’m from the southern part of India where all houses have these plants all around the place and just walking by the place around the evening/night would make me sneeze uncontrollably , it has such a great fragrance that it literally spreads to the houses nearby … must be nice not to be allergic to them!!

In our Odisha too. Jasmine is very common flower plants mostly in rural areas. Locally known as Malli , but there's also a different version of Jasmine flower we call it as JAI , Jai Flower. But it's petals are long and sharp. and the Plants look like vine.

Value addition doesnt happen when you pick the buds. Hence why people engaged in the most labour intensive part arent exactly well paid.
I love how it’s collected gently and then spread by iron rakes and then men walk through it and push baskets through the flowers.
I think it's cause when they hand collect them they can crush it more easily. Plus the raking and hand spreading seems to be pretty gentle and they put their feet under the flowers for the most part (I assume as to not crush them). Also the flowers that are just picked have to look good for the markets but in production they just have to be good for their use

It's bcz these Blooming flowers are so delicate that touching them again and again would smush them easily and it gets spoilt real fast then.
They're light enough to be pushed by baskets and that prevents the touchie touchie.
Its bcoz when they collect them they are still buds and hav no scent. It needs to bloom to hav scent. The buds need to be handled delicately while plucking coz if destroyed it wont bloom and will die. Once plucked, gloomed in industry.. they have to cook it into perfume quickly as its shelf life is less. And also once it blooms, there is no need for extra care like required when it was buds.

So basically for 1 kg of Jasmin-oil 1000 work-hours of plucking is needed or 100 workers plucking one day. In the European context that would mean about 8.000 to 10.000 euros per day. But as this is India and 1 kg of the oil costs 5.000 USD and needs to be profitable, and after plucking there is further processing needed, you can estimate the approximate income of each women.

These women technically come under unskilled labour, and the cost of living here is low enough that 1 kg of rice is just 45 cents under the government’s scheme. Getting even 4 to 5 dollars a day is enough to support them and ensure a reasonable quality of life. Not to say that they shouldn’t be paid more, or that they aren’t being exploited though. Money is money at the end of the day, and if they earn enough to make a difference, they’ll keep showing up to work. That’s still better than staying at home without a job so…

So in Himachal Pradesh's Kinnaur district there is a product called CHULI OIL/apricot oil. It's really costly and has GI tag. Maybe you can make a video about it.

everyone involved here is crucial in producing a final product, from the growers (not shown) pickers, extracters and blenders. they are all doing the work.
I have one growing in my backyard and it is so fragrant when they flower.

Jasmine sambac, or Sampaguita in the Philippines, was a common plant in our home growing up, so now that I'm an adult I had to get one of my own. Seeing the blooms and smelling them is always so lovely!

I love the natural fragrance of Jasmine off the flowers, not perfumes. Too much Jasmine is headache inducing! I used so many perfumes throughout my life but the best Jasmine perfume I've ever used was the Signature Victoria Beckham Limited Edition, it came only in a 50ml Gold bottle. It was the best. It's been discontinued. It was absolutely divine because it captured the *real* Jasmine fragrance you get off the Jasmine plants. Jasmine oils give off a very different scent. Real Jasmine smells sweet like honey and vanilla.
That is amazing. All of harvesters are plucking the buds for 5 hours straight. It is definitely need patience and hard work. My respect for all harvesters💯💯
I do the farming of jasmine flowers and every day we sent around 70-100kgs of jasmine to market. However, it requires a lot of work and labour to keep it going

Jasmines actually grown in huge acres of farm in a place called Nilakottai which is around 45 Kms from Madurai
In Philippines it is called Sampaguita. We used to play it and make garland. And if your neighbor has a plant of it, we just plucked them and put the flowers inside our pocket Because it smells fragrantly and even if you're far-away you can still smell it

In southeast asia, especially in my country, Indonesia, it is smthing unimportant and we usually plant this flower because of its beauty and the scent that occurs when it's bloom. In my house, we have 3 trees and when night, I love the subtle smell from this flower. In indonesia, it's just a flower and we don't buy it, we just collect it in from our garden.

My favorite fragrance is from Gherlain (sp). They discontinued it recently. It is called Samsara, and I absolutely love it. It contains jasmine, but it’s more spicy than sweet. I really wish that they would bring it back. I love it so much.

I love jasmine is a lovely sent, only my husband gets a headache if i buy jasmine plant in Belgium. It’s here sold as indoor plant but the smell can be overwhelming. It’s one of my favorites also peony, roses, and lavender the first two grow in my garden, lavender is planned to be replanted. I love perfumes that has those components in it.

Coming from a place where Jasmine grows abundantly, and adorning it on hair, these Jasmine oil or fragrances are too overpowering which doesn't smell like real Jasmine at all, the flower is so mildly fragrant and so beautiful

They are payed well because they are skilled laborers. It takes a skilled eye to see what to and what not to pick

If you think that being a perfumer is someone who just “brought the final product at such little price [and] sold them under the name of profit”, you are mistaken as to their role in this process. Yes, the brand makes a profit on their product, but they do have to pay considerable amounts to get the pure oils to blend into perfume and they must experiment extensively to create marketable blends which costs many thousands in development and research. Not one stage of production in perfumes is cheap, in labour or cost. Each stage is paid according to skill and production. Of course the pickers will not be paid at the rate of the perfumer, perfumers have a very specific skill set to perform their roles. Whereas pickers, while having a valuable skill, are more available than perfumers. It’s economics. I would be willing to pay my surgeon more than my plumber for the rarity of their skill set. Likewise the perfumer more than the picker.
Jasmine has an anti anxiety quality. It well worth it weight in gold. It good in tea.
