The IBM 6360 diskette (8") unit was attached to the IBM 6580 Displaywriter (an early word processor using Intel 8086 chips). I used one of these back in the 1980s. It pre-dated the original IBM 5150 PC.

I can't really breathe in those masks which they sell in DIY stores. I think unless you don't visit such places every day, it should be fine. Mold is everywhere outside in lower concentrations.

Aren't you worried about contracting mesothelioma from asbestos or cancer from black mold? Those places are so nasty, I would be afraid to breath the air.
I've noticed this before but in your video/film it was said the house was to be torn down. Why isn't anyone rescuing the old woodwork, doors, windows (especially the colored glass ones) and hardware like the chandeliers? So many items to save and yet left to destruction. Those lovely banisters, old bedframes, enamel cooking pots etc. Plus the wonderful old safe. So sad to know this will all be lost.
paula null I ask this same question all the time. If liability is the concern (assume it is), have all buyer's sign a waiver stating the property owners are not responsible for any injuries.

usually the people doing the demolition will strip the house of anything useful or valuable before they tear it down, as part of their payment for the job. one of the cable tv channels (discovery, history, travel) has a running series that does exactly that.
I love the way you are always so respectful of each property you enter!💜 The table ladies use is called a dressing table, and the machine with the two rollers was used for wringing wet clothes through! You put the edge of a piece of clothing in the small space between the rollers, and turn the handle, the clothes are pulled through, wringing off any excess water! Another beautiful old home. It's a shame that it's been allowed to rot. Like you said about the stained glass window, that kind of beauty and craftsmanship is seldom found in modern homes. I can only hope that the architectural features are salvaged, like the living room floor was, before the building is razed. It would be a shame to be lost to the demolition. All o the places that you show are very beautiful and have so much history behind them. The wine was still good I'm sure... unless the seals or corks are not intact. They would still be drinkable... Wine only gets better with age. It looked as if someone came in the building and stripped it of its valuable old wood flooring. All those files are just sitting there rotting. They alone must be worth someone to the people they represented. My only concern when you enter these old abandoned buildings are that you don't wear protective gear. With all the black mould and other bacteria growing all over the place, it's only a matter of time before one or both of you get really sick. Please take the time to go and get protective face masks, goggles and gloves so you won't get anything in your nose, eyes and mouth or touch something that may pick up a live strain of bacteria and then become infected if you rub your eyes or touch your mouth or nose. I'm sure your parents and loved ones want to have you around for much longer. But as always I really enjoyed the place and can't wait for the next. Stay safe....

Yes, please listen to Rho RhoTiss. When I was about your age, I inhaled a spore from where I worked. It was on what used to be a bird sanctuary, and it did a great deal of damage to my lungs (histoplasmosis). You cannot undo such damage. With the degree of decay and mold present in these locations that you're walking through, you are in great danger of harming yourself. Please take precautions.

yes, diseases are actually carried by wild birds and distributed through their droppings. be very careful about touching and breathing. look into how flu viruses are spread.
Katherine Myers, yes. Check with your local experts on what pathogens may be present. In the south, many are exposed to histoplasmosis, it's quite common. The sanctuary that was housed where I worked was full of egrets. The spore grew from where their droppings were deposited, and have a potential to cause a great deal of problems. My lungs are full calcified lesions that make them look like a road map when scanned. The disease also caused complications from healing after surgery and even caused problems with my eyesight that had to be handled with antibiotics. You're a good mama for being concerned for your boys. Just follow through with this. Knowledge is power. Best of luck to you and yours!
the machine at the top of the stairs is a paper press. its a copier called a Ditto Machine, for making copies. you had to type out your master copy on a hectograph, which made a mirror copy of your work. you line the master up with a blank sheet of paper and crank the handle and you get a copy. As for the io device connected to the computers, those are 9" cassette drives for storing text data.
Sometimes these buildings are inherited by relatives who have no interest in the property, but then one would think it would be sold unless in a depressed area. Often they are abandoned as they are tied up in litigation when an estate or will is contested or if banks and creditors are fighting over a property (common with larger homes when a rich person's financial status changes and they try to hold on to their lifestyle by borrowing from many sources. I looked into some abandoned properties years ago, investors bought them when they became rezoned as commercial and let them fall apart for years before demolishing them and developing the land or building an industrial park. One owner offered to sell me the house if I moved it, but the cost of moving it would have cost as much as the house was worth, and what bank would finance that? I recently bought a house abandoned for 7 years. It had some broken windows and raccoons had done a lot of damage and left a lot of dangerous waste in the ceilings. The wiring had been cut maliciously (not for the copper), the pipes were burst and the lower floors were sagging from rotted joists due to the wet basement. It was to the point where some said it should be demolished but some investors wanted to buy it cheap, gut it and fix it and sell it. I wanted the newer heated barn/shop and lot. My offer was accepted so I will fix it as I can afford, retaining the original woodwork, floors, etc. Nothing like the properties in these videos, but still a fun piece of history to try to save. The seller was still making payments on the property, no one is sure why she abandoned it and let it decay.

Don't ever taste a bottle that wasn't tipped to keep the cork damp. Oxygen can get in through a dry cork and oxidize the wine.

All o the places that you show are very beautiful and have so much history behind them. The wine was still good I'm sure... unless the seals or corks are not intact. They would still be drinkable... Wine only gets better with age. It looked as if someone came in the building and stripped it of its valuable old wood flooring. All those files are just sitting there rotting. They alone must be worth someone to the people they represented.
My only concern when you enter these old abandoned buildings are that you don't wear protective gear. With all the black mould and other bacteria growing all over the place, it's only a matter of time before one or both of you get really sick. Please take the time to go and get protective face masks, goggles and gloves so you won't get anything in your nose, eyes and mouth or touch something that may pick up a live strain of bacteria and then become infected if you rub your eyes or touch your mouth or nose. I'm sure your parents and loved ones want to have you around for much longer.
But as always I really enjoyed the place and can't wait for the next. Stay safe....

Yes, please listen to Rho RhoTiss. When I was about your age, I inhaled a spore from where I worked. It was on what used to be a bird sanctuary, and it did a great deal of damage to my lungs (histoplasmosis). You cannot undo such damage. With the degree of decay and mold present in these locations that you're walking through, you are in great danger of harming yourself. Please take precautions.

yes, diseases are actually carried by wild birds and distributed through their droppings. be very careful about touching and breathing. look into how flu viruses are spread.
Katherine Myers, yes. Check with your local experts on what pathogens may be present. In the south, many are exposed to histoplasmosis, it's quite common. The sanctuary that was housed where I worked was full of egrets. The spore grew from where their droppings were deposited, and have a potential to cause a great deal of problems. My lungs are full calcified lesions that make them look like a road map when scanned. The disease also caused complications from healing after surgery and even caused problems with my eyesight that had to be handled with antibiotics. You're a good mama for being concerned for your boys. Just follow through with this. Knowledge is power. Best of luck to you and yours!
the machine at the top of the stairs is a paper press. its a copier called a Ditto Machine, for making copies. you had to type out your master copy on a hectograph, which made a mirror copy of your work. you line the master up with a blank sheet of paper and crank the handle and you get a copy. As for the io device connected to the computers, those are 9" cassette drives for storing text data.
What don't people buy these before they get in this shape ?
Sometimes these buildings are inherited by relatives who have no interest in the property, but then one would think it would be sold unless in a depressed area. Often they are abandoned as they are tied up in litigation when an estate or will is contested or if banks and creditors are fighting over a property (common with larger homes when a rich person's financial status changes and they try to hold on to their lifestyle by borrowing from many sources. I looked into some abandoned properties years ago, investors bought them when they became rezoned as commercial and let them fall apart for years before demolishing them and developing the land or building an industrial park. One owner offered to sell me the house if I moved it, but the cost of moving it would have cost as much as the house was worth, and what bank would finance that? I recently bought a house abandoned for 7 years. It had some broken windows and raccoons had done a lot of damage and left a lot of dangerous waste in the ceilings. The wiring had been cut maliciously (not for the copper), the pipes were burst and the lower floors were sagging from rotted joists due to the wet basement. It was to the point where some said it should be demolished but some investors wanted to buy it cheap, gut it and fix it and sell it. I wanted the newer heated barn/shop and lot. My offer was accepted so I will fix it as I can afford, retaining the original woodwork, floors, etc. Nothing like the properties in these videos, but still a fun piece of history to try to save. The seller was still making payments on the property, no one is sure why she abandoned it and let it decay.
