- Flatbed will be part of the 2nd Gen Cummins Project, but I figured I would do a little "how to" for those who may want to build one for themselves yet have a few questions. Hope this helps and thanks for 200 subs!!!!

I built one back in 1986 for a F-350 diesel cab and chassis that I bought NEW. I framed it with Square and rectangular tubing and I MANIFOLDED it together, so it was a AIR TANK. I have forgotten how many gallons it held. It took up NO SPACE except for the Gauge, hose, and plug in chuck. Sold it in 1996. That was a handy feature for sure. I had Belly Pans on it with flush mounted stainless steel locking latches that were keyed alive, it had four recess mount stainless steel taillights and premium Marker lamps. I put two Seal Beam tractor lights in the rear at the bottom of the tail end. I had them WIRED where they would come on when I put it in REVERSE, OR I could turn them OFF, or I could TURN THEM ON going down the road to get Bright lighted TAIL GATERS off my ass. It had all ENCLOSED wiring, the two inside taillights had independent BRAKE LIGHTS, the two OUTSIDE tail lights had turn signals which doubled as stop lights too. All plugs for TRAILERS were ICC STANDARD just like an 18 wheeler wiring COLOR CODED ICC STANDARD. It had a Rub Rail all the way around to chain loads down and a RECESSED Goose-neck hitch box. The Bed was 1/8th inch Diamond plate. Had a heavy steel Headache rack, and it was painted the SAME COLOR as the rest of the truck (RED) with silver pin-striping. Wish I still had it. Got compliments on it every where I stopped. It also had a Tail Roller on it for a WINCH, but I never put a winch on it.

Erik Vogt I made a boost controller cause my vacuum for my wastegate was broke but other than that completely stock. Hopefully have an hx40 in the near future and also a diamond eye 4 inch straight pipe along with a highflow crossover pipe. I also need a new pmd in the near future.
When I turn 16 I am going to grind for a manual truck and make a flatbed for it. Right now I have 14 and I work on the farm for my dad. Can’t wait to get cracking

Looks good but you really should have ground off that rust/mill scale looking forward to more and seeing some welds.
Just watched someone build a minimalist flat bed, while this one looks “maximal.” I guess if you have a Cummins and can tow a lot, you need strength, but unlike a trailer, your 3/16 sub frame structure could be relegated to the existing truck frame. I would be concerned the bed weight is robbing payload.
I look forward, in the next video, to seeing how it turns out.

Pan the camera back a bit for the overall views - it will be a lot easier to see the whole picture, and it won't seem so herky-jerky...
Just unloaded some steel to start my build. I am thinking on the primer you used. Is that oil based primer if so how has the Upol bed liner been holding.

@@justinaulgur9812 I have the frame and 8 mounts welded up. It's on my channel. I would of used tubing instead of C Channel but they didnt carry the 2x3 liked used on this video.

How much tubing did you use?
Good vid but I do have a question you tac cross supports on the front and the back without first welding the supports underneath and then tacked your hitch on without welding the rear supports how are you going to get to those joints to weld them I understand the importance of tac everything before you weld it out but you tech things over you’re well Jones
I like the idea about hiding the pin. I've had kids come by and pull my pin as a prank and I drove off and lost the trailer
What size and wall thickness of square tubing did you use on the bed?
2"x3" tube 3/16" wall for subframe and other stress points 1/8" for everything else

For a half ton truck (1500 lbs payload), I'm sure 2" x 3" x 3/16" is probably not necessary. How small would you go?
Depends on what you’re using it for, wouldn’t go and smaller than 14ga wall
Are you using steel? That is the same thickness as a standard save ford f two fifty frame so to speak

I'm a new subscriber. I have a dodge 2002 2500 that's raised 6 inches but it doesn't stop by the garage and I don't want to leave it out with the welding machine. I'd run the suspension you put on to you, I wanted to know if you can sell me the complete kit I put it myself

If you knew how much weight you needed to support on a flatbed, how many times would you multiply it for a road going vehicle? I'm building a flatbed to haul cargo trailers for a local company. 24' x 8.5' enclosed trailer will be about 1700lbs on 1 side at the wheels. Trying to keep it lightweight. 34" wide frame.

I am using a MIG welder, easiest process to learn

how wide did you make base?
Will 2" x 2" cross members in 3/16" work for my dually bed?
I can not find anyone that sales 2" x 3" rectangular tubing in 1/8". I did find 2"x 4" in 1/8 wall and they are $77 and 2"x 2" in 3/16" wall are $73 for 24 ft joints.
I plan to order this Monday.
I wouldn’t use 2x2 on a flatbed, 2x4 would be better or you can go with 3 or 4” channel
@@j_moffitt Thanks. I will ask on Monday on Channel. They did offer me 1.5 x 3 tubing. I could also go all 2 x 3 in 3/16" but at 134 lbs for 24' it will add up quick.

Can you list all the gauges of steel you used to build this flatbed? I’m currently looking for a flatbed for my f250 but want to see if it’s cheaper if I just built my own.
Used 3/16” tube for the subframe and 1/8” for cross members and all the plate
Can you point me to info regarding measuring or how to brace where the frame drops (near the cab).
Maybe skip ahead to pt 4 or 5 I think and I believe we get it mounted to the truck

On using the diamonds on the tape, did you measure from the outside of the beam or the inside, or does it matter.
I do on centers, you can run whatever center you want but for the thickness of material I’m using 16” centers isn’t really necessary and 24” is a bit much so the diamonds are a good in between measurement and it’s already marked on the tape for ya so it makes it easier
With your rear hitch designed an setup that way how much weight would you say that's good for?
A hippo, 2 elephants, and give or take a warthog lol same if not more than factory

Is 3/16ths or 1/8th material used for the frame of the receiver hitch?
Since I'm going to be bracing the hitch with plate on the rear I chose 1/8'' and doubled up like I have it, its super strong but you won't hurt anything going bigger
How much tubing material did you use for your frame of bed? I've been wanting to make a bed for my 3rd Gen and was wanting to look around for material cost for my area, but not knowing how much I would need to spend on. Awesome videos and I cannot wait to see what the 2nd Gen will look like at the end.

I used 2”x3” tube 3/16” wall for the sub frame and then 2”x3” tube 1/8” wall for cross beams and everything else

J_Moffitt that's about what I was thinking. Using almost your exact design I came up with something for my truck and steel tubing alone I need right around 120 foot

Zero removal of mill scale with wire welder weld. Glad that's not my truck. Also pulling off the bed vs the frame is questionable. Bolt that hitch to the frame and let the bed float like it has to prevent creaking the welds from twisting.
All your production flatbeds have the hitch built into the bed. Look at cm or any big bed makes
