This is a Christian response to TheThinkingAtheist's video: • Afterlife
Disclaimer: If you bring up the point that much of what we say is appeals to emotion and not backed up, then remember the video we are responding to does the same thing. So of course the response will be like the video it is responding to. The claims here can be backed up and have been on our channels. It is not a direct logical argument for the existence of God. If you want that please check out other videos on our channels.

♥ The infinite blackness of space corresponds to an imaginary blank slate, which has the potential for something to exist within it.
♥ The 'things' that exist within that imagination are thoughts, given form.
♥ As individuals we get to experience these thoughts through the 5 senses of the vehicle that is our body.
♥ These senses are fed up into our brain, and converted into thought in our mind for us to perceive.
♥ If the greater mind that is exterior to us, but which also contains us, did not flow into us continuously like a river, we would not exist.
♥ We are the universe, experiencing itself from many different perspectives.
♥ We are one with the Force, and the Force is with us.
♥ We are in the Father, and the Father is in us.
♥ Our minds are a part of God's mind. We are very holy!
♥ Therefore, LOVE your neighbor as yourself:)

If we don't believe when Jesus said no one has ascended to heaven. John 3: 11-13
And that Paul mentions that death is a sleep, until the second coming of Christ. 1 Thessalonians 4:13,14
And that the soul that sins is she who will die. Ezekiel 18:20
How will we understand the interpretation of a parable or a vision on death,
which are symbolic if we do not understand Jesus.
If he doesn't listen to Jesus, they won't be persuaded when someone from the dead will rise again.
If I told you these earthly things, and you don't believe them, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?
For no one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, namely the Son of Man who is in heaven. John 3:11-13
      The words of Jesus
After these words, Jesus said to them: Lazarus, our friend, sleeps; but I will wake him up...
Jesus had spoken of his death, but the disciples believed he was speaking of the drowsiness of sleep.
Then Jesus said to them openly: Lazarus is dead but I will wake him up... John 11: 11-14

Why do people get upset with videos like this? By saying they are "an emotional appeal". In my honest opinion, I think videos like this are good to watch every now and then because when you're trying to share something with someone, its good to connect with that person on an emotional level. Now don't get me wrong, having some sort of intellectual basis for what you believe is incredibly important, but when people deny the existence of God, It usually isnt because of intellectual reasons, but rather the person has been affected on an emotional level, whether it be them not liking to be accountable to someone, or them having moral issues with god, or perhaps having a bad experience with a "church" or a "christian"

I'm so glad all of you posted this, I cant tell you enough the strength of all of you and what this message means, with TH-cam and the internet saturated with such nonsense from the secularist, your united front is a breath of fresh air. I so long ago abandoned secularism and materialism, it made no sense, it preached a random and chaotic universe on one hand, then evoked the ordered structured laws of physics on the other hand, it states the universe is meaningless, but the universe created sentient creatures that so crave meaning and order randomly. Materialism is circular reasoning at its finest.
And to all those people on here who reject Christ because of poor perceptions of Christianity, remember Christ did something no other had done, not Buda, not Mohammad, he offered his unconditional love to you, he asked no sacrifice of you but to receive his love, he became human, washed your feet, comforted you, the creator of the universe, the most powerful entity imaginable humbled himself to you.

I did not expect this Kind of Video on this Channel, but it is a beautiful Response to the Afterlife Video of the TheThinkingAtheist.
I personally find it very simple: Either there is Life after Death or ther is not, so if there is NO Afterlife, then you can believe in it or not and the Outcome will be the same eitherway, i.e. nothing (so it just does not matter at all). But if there IS an Afterlife, then believing in it prepares you for it, while ignoring the Possibility might then possibly give you Trouble. So, I would say believing in the Afterlife is the the safer Route.

Inspiring, I have seen this video once before, but after rewatching it I think this is one of the most inspiring (ha) videos for a Christian. After what feels like forever I feel like I can get out of this doubting phase and find faith in Christianity again. But before I do that I must ask you something. (I'll give some context before I get to my question, please bare with me) Since the summer of 2016, I have been an agnostic Christian, hostile against the idea of faith believing it to be blind belief. I lost my faith after watching a video by "Dr Shaym" called "10 Questions For Atheists Answered" (or something like that, I'll have to see if that's the right title). Most of the questions were stupid like "Why are flowers beautiful," or "how did life get here". The one that got to me though was "where do your emotions come from" (I previously thought they came from your soul), he responded by saying they were just neurological triggers, and the fact you're alive is because if them- plus there was no trace or evidence of a soul. This led to me finding "evidences" against god and Christianity, and i became an agnostic. I found your channel, and then I became an (inexprienced) apologist, however despite all the evidences I could never accept God in to my life, I always thought that I would search for the "proof of god" and THEN I would believe. The proof never came, sure the videos on idealism were convincing but there were always objections, and it certainly didn't help that other channels made responses to your videos (which seemed convincing). It was only recently that I had the idea of having faith in God rather than searching for proof of him, that leads me to now. IP, I am faced with a big problem, I have three questions I'd like to ask if you have the time. Thank you for reading this far, I'm so sorry it was long, but I hope you can understand where I am coming from. May I ask you those questions?

Thank you for this IP. So incredibly moving, well researched, and an excellent fusion of sources as always.
I know some might enter here and say this is an "argument from utility." But it is so much more than that. This message, and messages like it, are meant so that *you* (the listener) will reflect on what you *want*.
And recognize the *logical implications* of wanting it the way you do.
I think it may be best to think of this message, and those like it, as a mirror that reflects back to you your prerogatives based on how you respond to it.
How we respond to the cross-- God's initiative to reconcile us to Him once and for all into a loving relationship-- simply indicates whether or not we *want* to relate to such a loving God (or not) in the first place.

Loved this video. I haven't really been aware of the existence of Christian apologists on TH-cam for a while (I'm not really all that into waging war with the militant atheists who feel like they have to go on TH-cam and insult things they don't understand), but you people are just awesome and brave. Honestly, I'd love to spread the Gospel, but I don't want to get involved in all of this fighting crap you people have to put up with from bigoted, rude, mocking atheists. Sure, they're not all that way, but a lot of the "cool" ones seem to be.
I mean, you're practically heroes, fighting for God's truth on the Internet, which I once thought was the land of the militant atheists and a place where Christians just had to hide their faith, lest they face some kind of cyber-persecution. You've shown me that yes, it's possible to make a case for your faith on the internet, and if more Christians were just younger and more tech-savvy than maybe the playing field would be more even.
Atheists can sometimes be able to claim getting a lot of hate for what they do, but mostly it's just a bunch of trolls pretending to be religious fundamentalists that bother them. They rarely have to answer serious arguments because the Christians that would be tech-savvy enough to contact them and be brave enough to ask them (and word their arguments and facts articulately) are in short supply. It's probably a 5:1 ratio at the most in favor of atheists, maybe even more so. And if all the militant TH-camr atheists talking about how much they've suffered and been wronged by churches or Christians ever looked at the amount of suffering Christians have had to go through, and the amazing things Christians have done and the contributions it's given the world (yes, it's brought some good things), than maybe they'd keep their damn mouths shut and stop hating on people just because those people see things differently than they do.

Ugh, wait, sorry, I was ranting and not thinking clearly. I'm sure there are a plenty of non-militant atheist TH-camrs out there. No hard feelings, just wanted to thank the Christians who made this. Sorry to any atheist reading that, I just got off my rocker a bit :(

When people chide Christians for appealing to emotions because of messages like this I want to just scream _”WAKE UP!”_
Human beings are not just mechanical analytic-bots. When we explore the very real questions of meaning, and beauty, value, and love we cannot help but cross into the realm of experience.
And when we explore human experience, we will inevitably transcend the coldness of mere calculation into the realm of ... dare I say ... real life _“emotions”_ and _“feelings.”_
If you want to divorce the intellectual dynamic from the experiential and just blindly ignore the other facet of what it means to be human ... by all means!
But I chose the accept, cherish, and nourish both aspects of my humanity and thereby touch upon the full range of life and experience

InspiringPhilosophy, since you're a theistic evolutionist, I have a question regarding the whole value thing: would it not make more sense that the reason we see value in others is because we value ourselves and our own survival. When we see other conscious beings, we feel empathy for them since they are of our kind. Evolution might be able to explain why we feel that there are objective values. Furthermore, couldn't evolution also explain why we feel the want for something more than this world? Maybe an innate desire to survive.

    • @InspiringPhilosophy
      @InspiringPhilosophy  10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Well, first I'd argue on the surface level, just because something can explain, that doesn't make it the most probable explanation. YECs can explain fossil by saying Satan put them there, but that doesn't make it probable. Second, and going deeper, a desire to survive would entail not a desire for another world, but for more of this one. That would not explain why we think parts of this world are evil. In fact it would create the opposite and make us crave more of it.
Third, valuing the life of another in your tribe can be explained by evolution, but I don't think it can explain value for predators or enemies. Why do I feel bad to see tigers die? They can kill humans. Shouldn't we want them dead so the threat is gone. It is also hard to explain someone like Dirk Willems who went back to save the man who was chasing him after an escape from execution and then arrested him which put him right back on death row.
As Annie Dillard says in 'Pilgrim at Tinker Creek,' "There is not a person in the world that behaves as badly as praying mantises. But wait, you say, there is no right in wrong in nature; right and wrong is a human concept Precisely! We are moral creatures in an amoral world. . . Or consider the alternative . . . it is only human feeling that is freakishly amiss . . . Allright then - it is our emotions that are amiss. We are freaks, the world is fine, and let us go have lobotomies to restore us to the natural state.”

IP does an excellent job, as always, explaining the problems with evolution on the epistemological side. I'd also like to add that the big problem with evolution, on the scientific side, is the lack of any mechanism to explain the changes seen in the fossil record itself.
Imagine if I wanted to demonstrate the evolution of Windows, Linux, and Mac operating systems. At the bottom of the tree I would put the DOS program (since all three branches share DOS as its common ancestor).
I could even zoom in on one, single, part of the tree-- lets say Windows Vista transitioning into Windows 7. Here, I could even point toward the fact that they have 97% the same coding (which translates into a few million lines of code). The question would still remain:
What is the *mechanism* by which Windows Vista transitions into Windows 7?
The typical mechanism people think of when explaining changes seen in the fossil record is adaptation via natural selection of random DNA mutations. Right? But this mechanism has been tested extensively (billions of generations of AIDS virus and bacteria, thousands of generations of fruit flies subjected to radiation so as to increase the rate of random DNA mutations, etc. the list goes on and on. . . experiments are still being done, now, as we speak) and has been conclusively shown to be incapable of explaining the changes observed in the fossil record.
People like Dawkins and Gould understood this, and so they debated over a mechanism that *can* cause such changes. See here as an example of the debate:
      www.sersc.org/journals/IJBSBT/vol3_no4/3.pdf
So the fact is. . . a testable mechanism capable of causing such changes as a 5% alterations in DNA coding (such as is the difference between apes and men) is still needed.

Luk 12:6-7 Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? 7 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.
Per Jesus's statement above there is no such thing as chance. From the birds to the numbers of hairs on your head are known by God. And not only are we more valuable than sand but even more than many sparrows. These are 2 totally opposite world views. It comes down to was Jesus lying or was He speaking the truth. Mans eternity stands on this most important question.
Mat 12:35 The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil.

Putting on Christ which is also putting on the divine nature I think is the way we have a guarantee of Salvation in this life. He is Immortal he is imperishable he is Incorruptible so if we put on that nature must we not also put on the same nature that lives within us. Can we put on a person without putting on his nature which is divine.?

Hello Inspiring Philosophy. I wanted to tell you that in regards to an afterlife and Sean Carroll's response to it I managed to get the co author of John Polkinghorne's book Questions of truth Nicholas Beale to answer me on the issue.
    a. Christians believe in the Resurrection whereby God remembers us perfectly and gives us a new body. There is absolutely no reason in physics why this should not happen. Indeed there is fairly serious discussion about uploading minds into computers already.
    b. It’s also the case that we certainly don’t know the ultimate laws of physics: we don’t even know what Dark Matter consists of which makes up the majority of matter in the Universe. Almost all physicists agree that some entirely new physics will have to be discovered. But this has no direct bearing on the question of an afterlife as Christians understand it.

why did cs lewis say if the universe has no meaning we should never have found out that it has no meaning?

    • @nunyabisnass1141
      @nunyabisnass1141 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Because Lewis could never accept atheism, even after giving it the old college try. He found it "unsatisfying" in the sense that he couldn't reconcile popular common subsets of beliefs often associated with atheism, whith his need for attaching a meaning to things and finding a beuty within that inherent meaning.
You can tell quite clearly, that a supposition of a meaning, or lack there of, is not an inherent property of atheism, but according to Lewis's personal meaning of atheism, it was. Meaning what he really reject was his own meaning and definition, but not the brute description of the philosophy of atheism that so many don't struggle to grasp.

Very good video! ... and very neoplatonic too. To me, it appeared as though you attempted to bash and belittle the material/temporal world as insignificant in the grand scheme of eternity in order to heighten our view of the afterlife. The risk involved in this approach is that people come away with a misguided view of this present world (and our activities within) as unimportant. I know you said otherwise in your video, but not enough emphasis was placed on the beauty, goodness, and truth that pervades BOTH the immaterial/eternal world and the material/temporal world. Otherwise people will think that certain human activities like exercising, the arts, et cetera do not mean anything and are therefore a waste of time (as I did for many years). Aside from this, I think your video accomplished what you intended. Even for me, it helped direct my view back to the One Who holds my very life and breath together. Thank you for providing this inspirational and re-orienting video!

  • @redeamed19

There is no reason why the answer to "is this all there is?" should be self evident. Many times we have asked that question to find that were was more than we thought there was to the world from the exploration of land and sea to the discoveries of scale of the universe and microscopic world that makes it all up. It makes sense that it naturally be directed at our individual life spans. IT would not make sense for an answer to just be instinctively known.
The quote about if the universe has no meaning we should never have found out that it has no meaning makes no sense in this context because the inquisitive mind seeks answers does not mean the answers must be more than no.
I agree that we are not a value based on our size. That makes sense and I don't believe anyone claims that.
I also do agree the concept of an afterlife does not devalue this life. This I know many atheist claim, and while I am not convinced it exists I don't think it would either get boring or devalue existence if it did exist. I say the same about immortality on earth though if I could attain it and many people disagree with me on that.
Did this video just assume that there are no happy and successfully ethical atheist?
I like the general positivity. It is nice to see in contrast to the places in religion where that is missing so bravo there. It is a well done video but I think it makes some inaccurate assumptions about the beliefs and lives of atheist as well as those of people of faith. Everyone goes through positive and negative times, and everyone tries to do good with poor results at time (which back to concepts of morality and consequentialism vs kantianism vs other alternative morality qualifiers). I think this assumes more discrepancy between the groups than really exists on the personally satisfied life and ethics.

    • @InspiringPhilosophy
      @InspiringPhilosophy  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Well, I do not say the answer is instinctively known, but the question.
CS lewis's point though is if there was no meaning, we should be asking questions of meaning, since it would not exist in any objective sense. To question if there is meaning supposes meaning in the question.
Also, see the video we responded to. They claimed size shapes value in the opening lines... That is why this in specifically in here. Sorry if you thought we assumed there are no successfully ethical atheists. We do not believe that. It was mainly a response to a atheists video on this subject linked in the information section, if that helps.

Concerning some negative (!) aspects of certain "ATHEISTS", see Angel Muk's
Comment on InspiringPhilosopy's Video (19) The Leibnitzian Cosmological Argument.
(= Often forgetting about their very own SELF-Soul ...thus selflessly turning egotistic,
and "always searching something" in the OUTSIDE instead of WITHIN themselves! Etc.)
Besides, those Universes and Parallel worlds are NOT created by "some thing" or
"some one" (like said here), thus those biblical YHVH -letters, meaning "ALL-MATTER",
(believed as merely one, male 'creator'!), but by this non-material, space-and time-
less and eternal "ALL-SOUL" (= In the Hebrew Bible written HVH.) HVH is mentioned
in Christianity as every human's "inborn, original SIN", as every person IS born with
one's individual SELF-SOUL, just alike ALL existing matter having a SELF-Soul WITHIN:
Even within the most tiniest sub-atom or Quark, etc.
Biblical HVH (= ALL-SOUL) is mentioned in Genesis 3:20 as "the mother of all life-
existence" and is vocalized in Hebrew as "HaVaH", thus "the (=Ha)-V-feminine (=aH)":
This "V"- letter is of such importance to Judaism, that most recently (!) those Rabbis
decided to exchange (!) all former "B"-letters into that "V"-letter: Thus former word
"HaBY", the-father-materialized (Aby) ... is now a 'HaVY', or former "HaBeL" (Abel), in
Aramaen meaning "the-Father-God" ... is now a 'HeVeL", etc., etc.
And "ALL-SOUL" -letters HVH are since written as 'KHeVaH'!:
Also HVH formerly was written in Christianity as "Ava", a female Name, and as "Ave",
see "Ave Maria" in Catholicism, or as "Eva" in Latin, or as "Eve" in English, or as "Ivo"
    a male name, etc. etc.
And those YHVH- letters, meaning "ALL-MATTER" (including HVH All-Soul!) has most
recently been exchanged changed into that Rabbinic 'YaKHVeH' -"Father-God", and no
more written as Jehovah or Yahveh, Jahweh or Yave or ...etc.
See that NEW, Israeli "The Jerusalem Bible", Koren Publisher. "AMEN".
How about some SELF-awareness? Some SELF-responsability, some SELF-insght?
Instead of being so usefully "selfless" asked for by those powerful, Religious Elites?

How will we understand the interpretation of a parable or a vision on death,
which are symbolic if we do not understand Jesus.
If he doesn't listen to Jesus, they won't be persuaded when someone from the dead will rise again.
If I told you these earthly things, and you don't believe them, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

Its like saying all Christians do not accept evolution while the truth is the opposite, not all Christians do not accept evolution. Furthermore, not all non-believers are atheist and those of other faith, that disbelieve Christianity, do have their own version of afterlife. And the arguments that are used for Christian faith could also be used by other faith.

First, I think you are going after a strawman in the first couple minutes of the video. One person in the linked video mentioned scale and significance. I think our relevance as far as the universe is concerned is what is insignificant.
And at about the 3 minute mark, you are allowing somebody to speak who clearly does not agree with your panenthiest solipsistic position, either that or he doesn't realize that he is undermining your/his position.

With respect to any subject whatever, the discussion can go on forever……but life is short and we have to act on the basis of what such evidence as we have had time to investigate shows on the balance to be probably true…
The conclusion of this book was that, on significant balance of probability, there is a God. If you accept it, it follows that you have a certain duties. God has given us life and all the good things it contains, including above all the opportunities to mold characters and help others….

NDE stories are not evidence of an afterlife. The key word is NEAR death, which is not the same thing as actual death. We already know that minds fire off unusual or bizarre mental images when under extreme duress.

Personal experience. People have personal experiences of hallucinating fairies and unicorns on LSD, does that constitute as evidence that fairies and unicorns are real?
How do you know near death will bring you close to god?
Just because someone has an NDE, and they become more moral, does that really prove god, or that they actually saw a life after death? People have also become more moral after experiences on LSD or marijuana. So no it doesnt prove anything.

Actually yes it does. Having an image or perception of something generally indicates that there is good reason for considering it into our territory. Repetition and magnitude are further factors for us cementing what's real and not.
How do you know that you know that you know that you know?
There's my admirably puerile response, but I've had enough of the skeptics of the stripe that would deny being slapped in the face by their grandmother even as it happened.
Because you're riddled with a mind set that denies direct experience. It's no good if it's "objective" which has its own stack of problems, it's own widely oscillating assumptions, it's own tactics. But why doesn't that prove anything, unless we were to admit that all is an illusion? The logic is sound. In fact, I think that the logical end of skepticism is denying reality itself (or at least everything but an undefined unknown noumena, perhaps the abyss or the Platonic Good and of course God). Whether that's true or not we can't say. Is the color red true or false? The taste of apples? Warm tits on a hot dang one? Nope, you decide.

Afterlife ... WHY is there only ONE Christian heaven and ONE Christian hell? People
do have different grades of "Evil", a murderer, raper or pedophile is much worse than a
liar or thief! Also human "Goodness" varies a great deal in loving capacity and EGOless-

FUN FACT: Jeremiah 3:14-19 proves fornication in the afterlife. it says the saints will "multiply" and have "children" in the millennium and we wont have the laws anymore that includes the marriage laws cuz the whole chapter is about marriage. so this is must be fornication.
It also says two of a family that's brother and sister.
    and before you say it
    1) it's only talking to the saints the unsaved are bearly mentioned.
    2) the 144,000 are virgin men that come down from heaven. if you've never had sex that means sex exists Revelation 14:1-4 this also proves gender exists.
    3) our glorified bodies are described as eating food and wearing cloths implying genitalia. we're not spirits just spiritual. Revelation 7:13-17. Jesus was also flesh and bone in his glorified body when he rows from the dead.
    4) cherubim are said to cover themselves implying genitalia and we know they don't marry so they have to fornicate Ezekiel 1:11
For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.
    Hebrews 7:12 KJV

My dear friend, You need to realize what the Bible is: Bible is not a book that articulates principles in a way you would expect from a scientific issue or straightforward journalism. No. The Bible is a Library, a collection of books and as such, we must take Into account the genre we are dealing with: is that poetry? Is it history? Often prophetic book (especially Ezekiel) are filled with symbols and metaphor. For instance, God is described like a four face animal moving on a throne that as wheels on it. Should we presume that what God looks like? Of course not, is more likely to be a metaphor meant to describe his attributes such as omnipresence (the wheels). We often use methaphor to describe higher realm of reality because our experience begins with our senses and perception. Jesus in dealing with Israelities was using parable that were about weddings, harvests, seeds, bread..... All these were within the grasp of everybody since back then they were most living on farming. The psalms describe the righteous as trees planted beside a river, but so far have never seen men with leaves on their head instead of hairs. Look at the genre you're reading and ask God to guide you. Peace be with you in Christ Jesus

***** A wise man once said to me, whether or not there is an afterlife, this is it." What he was getting at (to elaborate on the context) was that the bad comes with the good. To separate them, as heaven and hell does, results in the meaninglessness of the other.
The universe is not evil or unjust. It is both good and bad, just and unjust.
What I object to is not the notion that there is in some sense a heaven and hell, but I consider them states of mind, and of being, not a place where one goes after death.
I don't object to the possibility of an afterlife, but I object that it would be a place where god and bad are separated.

Well theologically you see why there’s separation of good and evil. As it’s a Christian video that’s understood by many others. But yes. This life my be all we have :) so go out and live it

You conflate images commonly associated with worldly pleasure with being negative of themselves. The problem is that you read into the images what is not intended. The idea is that for the nonbeliever, only worldly pleasures are left, to contrast with something transcendent. Feel free to complain about an imprudent choice. However, also feel free to offer a counter to the intended meaning, if you have one (you probably do).
I don't know about you, but I'm not quick enough to say I'm not looking for something or someone greater. Your quest for truth, which you engage in merely by responding, is a search for something greater.

Pleasures in life do not have to be cigarettes, alcohol, etc. the pleasure is in the things that matter to us the most. Our family, friends, and pets...or doing good things for others. that is what gives me pleasure.

    • @paradoxo9111
      @paradoxo9111 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

True, Livi A, but cigarettes and alcohol are paradigmatic of the party-life. That plays into the hand, emphasizing the point that all a person has left is worldly pleasure.

hahaha, lol, if you and the atheists only knew the Earth is Flat, as the Bible speaks, then all arguments about the existence of a Creator is case closed, there is a God! He made this world and only this world alone for mankind and all other living creatures, there's no universe and no useless Roman idol planets in the Cosmos or fairytale Outerspace, the only real places mentioned in the Bible are this Earth, the Heavens and Hell/Sheol/Hades and Gehenna.

I don’t think that’s scary. Why would it be scary to die? Maybe dying a painful death but death itself isn’t what’s scary, especially with a belief that you go back to nothing.
But I also don’t think that’s true. It’s more of a pursuit of that piece that’s missing. Not about the death of our bodies.
