    What THREE colors would you choose?! I’m so curious.... Let me know below! Thanks for watching. ALSO: here's the three colors I mentioned in my video and links for you to give them a try: Prussian Blue < amzn.to/2DtyUvR >, Lemon Yellow Deep < amzn.to/2Gxcjzc >, Opera Rose < amzn.to/2IVVxfL >. xoxo

      I agree about Prussian Blue!! LOVE the greens I can get from it! Then I would probably choose Quin Magenta and Hansa Yellow light. I love using pinks instead of true reds. I feel like you can warm up a pink really easily, but it’s harder to take a step red and turn it pink. 🤷‍♀️

      I think you've sold me on these three. I would've gone with ultramarine for the blue but now that I see the gorgeous purple you can make, I agree with you. I also appreciate your narrowing it down because I'm upgrading color by color from Cotman student grade to the professional and now I know which three to buy first. This will help a lot of us!

    I understand you love the colors opera rose and prussian blue, I do too, but these colors are fugitive. Meaning that the paintings won't last, they will fade and can't be packed. So beginners, that weren't given tis information, won't be able to see their first paintings in a few years and it's honestly a shame you wouldn't mention this. In any case, I did really enjoy your video and I will be subscribing :)

    If I had to choose just three colors; I would go with Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Deep and Indian Yellow. Because I do mostly landscapes, I can get a large variety of earth tones including some neutral colors that are close to Payne's Grey, Burnt Umber and Sepia. I can also get colors close to Burnt Sienna, Sap Green and Yellow Ochre.

    Interesting. Last month I tried to create a night sky using red and blue. ...blending to a purple. Omygoodness....the usual reds and blues I have DID NOT make the purple hue I wanted. So, I created a large sheet of test colors and lo and behold Opera rose and the french aquamarine/prussian blue colors made the color I wanted! It took me hours but it was a good lesson indeed. Great video!

    I chose 3 colors from my White Nights collection. Prussian Blue, Neon Pink and Aureolin. I was amazed at the gorgeous colors and how many variations from them. Thanks Jenna. I use a lot of convenience colors. I do mix but it's usually just to add a compliment to tone down a color or get just the right shade. I have tons of professional grade watercolor in many brands. This has shown me that I would benefit from cutting back on my color choices for a while so I can get to know the pigments a little better.

    • @JennaRaineyChannel

    I would bring Cobalt Blue, Winsor Yellow and Permanent Rose with me on the island. These work really well for me. I like Opera but on an deserted island could be a lot of sun.. so I would bring Permanent Rose instead and some tools for "cooking" food. Eating whatever I'm going to find there.

  • @chelle7007
    @chelle7007 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The purple you achieve by using the rose color is stunning. The peachy orange color is gorgeous too so I’d probably choose the same three. This made me want to explore more though so I’ll be looking more into color theory.

  • @odomisan
    @odomisan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Meimeri Blu brand (disclaimer: I don't work for them) have Primary Yellow, Primary Magenta and Primary Cyan, just like a printer, you can make all the colors with it. The downside is that you don't get the effects from minerals and you can't really get black due to transparency but for watercolor I don't do black anyway.

      Just make sure the paints you get are light - meaning not much minerals and transparent and clean/clear. Unless you want to get earthy/muddy colors then some minerals can help.

    Terrific color choices! My present obsession is with QoR thanks to my local art supply store. My absolute favorites would be: Quin. Magenta, Hansa Yellow and Phthalo Blue (Green Shade). I would have to add a neutral because I adore the Burnt Sienna (Natural). I love the muted colors it produces when mixed with the brights. Sara

    Thank you for this video Jenna! 😄 If you are new to watercolor or on a budget it can be really overwhelming paying out for watercolors and then learning all about colors, techniques, etc, so just having three colors to choose from really simplifies things and makes it a lot easier and affordable using watercolors. I think I'd have to choose primary colors just so I could mix other colors if I wanted to!

    Omg love u so much!! You have re-ignited my love for art. I actually minored in art in college (over 25 years ago!) and pastel chalk & charcoal were my media because it was cheaper than paint. About 3 yrs ago I picked up acrylics, then dropped it after 6 mos. Tried doing “watercolor-esque” painting with acrylics, and liked it…did one painting. I intended to try watercolor one day, but life got in the way. Your videos have solidified my commitment to get back to my art! Thank you, thank you!!

      Jenna Rainey thx, I will! I’m still trying to get the water right for the mixes. You use full strength for the first one, right? Then how many swishes in the water? Then do you wipe it off on the jar? I found when I did this the squares got too dry. I have been guilty of precious paper panic, so I have watched many YT vids and read many books. I have 2 of yours, that I love. I finally decided to get some cheaper paper and started painting. You are so right. Nothing can replace practice practice practice! I appreciate all your help!

    You primary triad looks beautiful, but I would not pick them.
    Opera Rose is extremely fugitive. It fades too quickly.
    Prussian Blue fades in light, but is self restoring if stored in darkness.
    My 3 choices would be:
    1. Davinci Quinacridone Permanent Alizarin Crimson (PV 19) (This is not the fugitive Alizarin Crimson.)
    2. Phthalo Turquoise (PB16)
    3. Benzimidazolone Yellow H4G (PY151)

    Hey Jenna!
    I love it that you replace Red with Opera Rose.
    I do have a question tho:
    What are your thoughts re the "primary colors" are NOT the 3 primary colors. That there are 3 primary colors. Cyan, Magenta. Yellow. I got these colors from Echo Gillette's TH-cam channel dated 8/7/19. They join the other 3 colors, Red, Blue Green____6 colors!
    👌

      Previous month I managed to pull my first five figure wage ever!!! I've been working for this provider on the web for two years now and I never been happier... They are paying me $95 per hour, and the most important thing regarding it is the fact that I am not really that tech-savvy, they only required basic knowledge of internet and plain typing skill...Superb thing about it is that now I have more free time for my loved ones. I am able to commit quality time with my friends and family and take care of my babies and also going on family vacation together with them very routinely. Don't miss this opportunity and try to react quickly. Check it out, what I do... *foryou49.com*

    Hi Jenna. I've asked this before, but how do you keep your cool and warm water glasses from mudding? Which one do you clean your black and brown paint in?

    • @JennaRaineyChannel
      @JennaRaineyChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Karen! So sorry if I missed a previous comment! I wash my black in the cool cup and brown in my warm cup. I just keep it really consistent, and it doesn't bother me, doesn't get overly muddy by the time I reach the end of a piece... But if you are extra concerned about the muddiness, try adding a third rinse cup! That'll help even more.

    Hi Jenna! Great video as always. Question! Why is it necessary to let the paint dry in the palette?

    • @JennaRaineyChannel
      @JennaRaineyChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s not necessary, but if you let it dry and activate it with water after it’s dried, you’ll use less. It just saves paint. 👍🏻

    I would switch opera rose for permanent magenta... I just don't like pink that much and mostly use blues, greens and purples anyway :) so a bit more blue to the magenta would be my choice for a richer purple.

    So if you mix all three they make black. But if you mix two first. Then add the third it makes brown 😂🤣 gotcha. You are cute. Love your enthusiasm. I’m not sure I could go without red. 😥 but these are lovely pigments

    Quin magenta, Winsor Blue, and Lemon yellow deep. Actually, since this is all pretend, I want New Gamboge made with PY153 that was discontinued 8-9 years ago. It's my fantasy, so I can pick unavailable pigments, right? 😂 But with what's currently available, gimme lemon yellow deep and I'll still be a happy on my island!

    So, you gonna choose two fugitive, non-stable colors out of three... And teach novices to do this. Prussian Blue is the only fugitive blue pigment, Opera is not a pigment at all, it's a dye. You can easily substitute with Permanent Rose or Magenta and Phtalo Blue to receive similar colors. Sorry, I think your advice is VERY bad!

    • @JennaRaineyChannel
      @JennaRaineyChannel  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! These are my three, you are more than free to make your own choices. As far as the fugitive colors are concerned: A) I'm a surface pattern designer, I scan most of my paintings and work with them digitally. B) I just love those colors. And C) I personally haven't had a huge issue with colors fading. If you think my advice is VERY bad, that's your prerogative and I'm okay with that. But these are my favorite three and that's what I'm sharing with the world. Have a lovely day.
