Saw this band 4 or 5 times back when. One of my favorite bands music wise in the past 30 tears. Just genius that they used simple lyrics but what's going on in the background is mind blowing. Perfect bass licks, rock steady power drumming, super complex guitar with just the right amount of synth added. I was once a professional sound man for large shows and this on headphones takes your breath away.
Ths is a freaking awesome song.....remember hearing way back in 82 when I was 17! I instantly switched from being a Rocker to becoming a New Wave/ New romantic!
Oh god I love this song. I love many of their songs. Jim Kerr was and is an amazing artist, love him. They sure don't make music like this anymore. If I could go back to the 80's I would in a heartbeat. Wonderful memories of those times. God where have the years gone.
If like me you were around to watch early simple minds live doing love song, the american etc, coolest band on the planet at the time, nobody could touch them, most people state what a brilliant guitar player this or that band has but Derek Forbes on Bass guitar was the backbone of the minds with so many killer lines,, still sounds exciting and edgy today.thanx to the poster.
Back in the early eighties, you were either a new romantic or a futurist.I was a 17 year old futurist.songs like this, kick in the eye-bahaus,etc.I remember buying this for£1-25p and dancin to it all the time!God,brilliant!
God spinning around and around in the Mudd club with me and my boy, black suits and 30's dresses and hats with veils, dancing and happy and teenage in new York in 1981 -- HEAVEN.
Taken from the album "Sons and Fascination", produced by the brilliant Steve Hillage, this, together with the second album realeased at the same time, "Sister Feelings Call", must rate as two of the greatest albums of all time. In the early 80's Simple Mind were as big as U2 and deserve to be so now. Awesome.
my personally great times of simple minds...1979 - 1985... # Life In A Day (1979) # Real To Real Cacophony (1979) # Empires And Dance (1980) # Sons And Fascination (Sept. 1981) # Sister Feelings Call (Sept. 1981) # New Gold Dream (81,82,83,84) (1982) # Sparkle In The Rain (1984) # Once Upon A Time (1985) when we were young...
I liked Simple Minds quite a bit in my highschool years, became a jazz aficionado later on. But even I listen to this tune today, I still think it is good music, it does stand the test of time. They were also good musicians in their own genre. Thanks for posting.
Nearly thirty years old and stills sounds as fresh as the day it was released - incredible. Credit to Jim and the boys but also to the genius that is Steve Hillage
Genious Minds. This star still shines brightly in the Simple Minds galaxy. They totally owned their unique sound during the -70´s and -80´s, but with time this precious legacy would, sadly, diminish. Their sound today is utterly foreign to me. Too commercial. The dynamism is gone, and that deep feeling has been lost. But their earlier works are of such brilliant quality; they will sustain me a lifetime.
i totaly agree,I read Jim Kerr didnt want to do "Dont you forget about me",[written by some one else for them" he should have trusted his instincts, back in the day the minds were beyond cool, cheers George.
oh yes, cut my hair, paint my face, break a finger, tell a lie...... THIS IS MY FAVE SIMPLE MINDS..... CHEERS MATE AND THANKS FOR THE UPLOAD! BLESS YOUR HEART, HEART OF STEEL...
Their peak. They got their musical balance sorted perfectly on this (their 5th) album. They retained just about the perfect amount of the more post-punk/experimental/electro sound of their first 3 albums and, reinforced the epic dancefloor groove with the electronic drums (emulator?) AND the incredible drumming of Brian McGee! When this was dropped in the clubs it was completely electric! And, speaking of electric...what a brilliant/full-on performance from guitarist Charlie Burchill (who could really play when he wasn't neutered by producers like Keith Forsey). Topping everything off is the introduction of a sharper pop foundation...but, in balance with their other musical ingredients. Live show on this tour was unreal Their peak
Agree - I remember when I first heard this in a club - immediately hooked - funny thing is that Don't You Forget About Me was probably the beginning of where they lost their way - but recently they've found it again
Scottish bands have a unique sound, a quality I can't quite put my finger on, but something i've heard when listening to bands such as the Skids, and the great guitar sounds of the late John McGeoch and the many bands he was associated with.
I bought this single at HMV in Trocadero? July, 1984, and I recall the clerk at the counter giving me a funny look which I've never really been able to place. He seemed sad that I'd choose an unremarkable record, though he was encouraging with my Killing Joke choices. To this day I still love Simple Minds.
Goosebumps is right .Been trawling through youtube as well and beginning to realise just how good they were compared to the crap today .Saw them in Croke Park dublin and still remember the atmosphere - incredible.Lyrics are poetry ,hindsight they were incredibly gifted . Great mateiral here for a film soundtrack .time for a comeback !
Bellissima, mi ricorda sempre la splendida musica da discoteca anni '80. Che tempi, un fiorire continuo di gruppi musicali tutti di livello oggi irraggiungibile...
I've just been playing a few Simple Minds clips on TH-cam ... all the Empires and Dance, Sons and Fascination - Sister Feeling Call, and New Gold Dream stuff. I love them all ... but this is the one that gives me goosebumps every time I hear the opening chords.
Forbes was one of the best bass players of the 80s, much under estimated. He drives this tune without getting complicated. Simple Minds at their best was Sons and Sisters...
Thank you, Agnes Leticia for posting this on my LovePeaceMusex group on FB! You know I love Simple Minds, and I love this song! (~_*) Obrigada, muy querida! hugzzz and a kiss, from Melody Fox (aka the Princess of Rock) Love Peace Music
Great tune. Still sampled into dance mixes in Ibiza...even today. Is that good or bad?? Methinks it's ok. Like the song say's "glory days come and go".

Oh god I love this song. I love many of their songs. Jim Kerr was and is an amazing artist, love him.

Such an incredible track just like I Travel and The American too, Simple Minds at their very best.

Simple Minds at their best and top level....inspirational sound for band to come..
Heart of steel......
One of the best dance songs ever. Simple Minds hit it out of the park their first time , a classic if ever there was one.
I liked Simple Minds quite a bit in my highschool years, became a jazz aficionado later on. But even I listen to this tune today, I still think it is good music, it does stand the test of time. They were also good musicians in their own genre. Thanks for posting.

i love simple minds:) francesco da napoli (ITALY)
This hit is why l fell inlove with SM back in THE days🎶
This blew my tiny head on the Walkman in 1981. Still does. Always will.
Muscially this is perfect 10/10. Lyrically....it's close to gibberish. 'Reptile man drop?' what? 🙂
saw them play this live in Belfast December 2008...absolutely awesome
my very favourite band of the 80s. I like plenty of other stuff, but these guys were bloody unreal.
I haven't heard this since 1981. Good post!

I have this single. Definitely their best track.
