Monk lived in a parallel world. Me makes us discover so much from this composition. I have heard from so many interpretors, mostly very honourable - but only Monk finds a composition in a composition. I wonder if the Duke heard Monk playing this?
1955 - Thelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington - 8 songs but Satin Doll is not one of them. Monk also played with the Ellington Orchestra at Newport I think in '62.
Because he rarely plated others work.....his words and the words of his contemporaries. I didn't say he never did. Maybe he did that in this performance because he was playing to Germans who may not have known his music as well as New Yorkers.
Inimitable, incontrovertible, incorrigible, immeasurable, indelible.

Wow...love it. That soft stride and all those tinkling Monkish melodies.
Oh, Monk.
Such beautiful playing!
one of the most beautiful versions
Love it! Monk is so unique; who else can do what he does with this tune?
You can see music going through monk. A guy beyond the rest.

I love the tempo: different!
creative brilliance incarnate. so fresh and funkae
Very rare for Thelonious to play someone else's song. Shows how much he respects the Duke.
Really beautiful!-His simply seeming-but extraordianary ideas of interpretation!
Like a Modern-Jazz-Machine...
