    Check out S&Q mode. There you have access to 1080p 120fps in 10bit.

      Thanks for the tip! The only reason I am hesitant to use it is the lack of sound (in the event I choose not to slow it down) but I suppose that’s an easy enough fix with an external recording device like the RODE GO II
      Great point though.

    • @shootrfilms
      @shootrfilms ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@calincharles yes, totally agree with you. It depends on how you want to use your 120fps footage. For my 120fps scenes i don’t really need the original audio that often. And if I do, I do have the option to film the same scene again in lower fps(for audio), or choose the option with an external device like you mentioned.

      I'm honestly not familiar enough with Nikon to say with 100% confidence. I feel like Nikon has kind of fallen into the background the last few years with the steps Canon, Sony, Fuji, & Panasonic have all made. From my quick read up on it, the Z6 ii is about $1000.00 less than the Sony. Which is something to keep in mind (perhaps a better comparison is the Lumix S5II?). The A7IV to me on paper is the better camera in almost all areas + a WAY larger full frame lens lineup available. But again, it's $1000.00 more, so you have to be the judge of that.

    I swear sony lens collection and third party ones is such an underrated argument. You can have the camera you want, if you don't have the appropriate glass which fits your shooting style, it won't be working for you. So I'm fine losing open gate, anamorphic desqueeze and those kind of stuff.. Just got my A7IV, it's been amazing to me so far (coming from an FX30)

    1080p 120fps is 10 bit you need to use S&Q. Also cropped 4k 60fps is due to the 7k sensor. you get oversampled 4k from 7k so it's give and take. Making higher fps available on an A7s3 and FX3 with its small 12mp sensor requires far less processing power than from a 33mp sensor.

    @Calin Charles This was a great video to watch. I’m really confused about which way to go and could use your honest opinion. I was strongly looking at the A7IV + 24-70 GMII lens, but bought a Canon R6 Mark II. I love the design, but the image quality was lacking for me on the photo side… I exchanged it for an R5 + 24-70/2.8 IS lens. Definitely improved image quality, but is heavy and awkward to navigate modes. Now, I’m thinking of going with the A7IV. Thoughts?

    The autofocus may be better than the A7iii but it's terrible in my use case. I shoot runners coming towards the camera with the 70 200 GM2 at f3.2. Autofocus is OK in bright sunlight but as soon as it gets cloudy, I can't get more than 70% of acceptably sharp pictures (only 10% fully focused). And this is with spot tracking, it is worse with wide area.

    Is there a trick to being able to tell "on paper" which lenses won't keep up with AF speed?

    • @calincharles
      @calincharles  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m sure once you get deep into lens technology/terminology there is. But for instance, my 24mm GM lens was released in 2018. That’s 5 years ago. So naturally it won’t have the same tech/advancements as newer lenses on the market.
      I’m sure it has to do with the 4 original XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors that newer lenses all seem to have. Looking at the 24mm for instance, it doesn’t seem to have that.

    Should you still buy it? Should you have bought it last year? Did the specs change between then and now? Have your needs changed?

    • @calincharles
      @calincharles  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that right now those questions depend on what camera ecosystem you’re invested in. If I have lenses for one brand, I’m probably not switching from that brand. But if you don’t have any lenses from any brands, then there are many good options out there and this is just one of many.
      I still love this camera. It’s still a great camera for a hybrid shooter and personally for the pricepoint I would still buy it if I had Sony lenses. If I needed mostly video, I’d probably look at other options like the fx3.
      But having said that, Canon has some SOLID options, Fuji has some SOLID options, and LUMIX just released an amazing camera that is cheaper. But yeah, I think at this price range the canon R6, LUMIX S5 mark ii, or the fuji X-H2
      But long story short, I don’t regret buying it. The only other Sony photo capable body I’d look at is the A7rV but that’s $2000 CAD more than the a7IV.

    I own the a7iv I think at the very least they could reduce the 4K 60 crop to like 1.2x 1.3x or 1.4x instead of 1.5x they did a smaller crop for the a7rv so I don’t see why they couldn’t reduce on the a7iv it’s the very least they could do to help them and there customers or maybe remove or make a mark 2 I reckon if we work together they will have to listen and make a change and with your large platform and influence would really help if you could spread the idea around thx

      I think it depends how invested you are into photography. I’ve sold a $2500 dollar camera to someone before who you could tell bought it on a whim, I saw him selling it a few months later for less than he bought it for.
      If you’re truly passionate and dedicated to continue in photography and video, starting off with a great camera will mean it’ll be a lot longer before you hit a ceiling where you’ll need to upgrade your gear. But if you’re not truly invested in learning, then you’ll have just spent a lot of money needlessly when you could have gotten by with a cheaper alternative
