    Same here, as a wedding camera it’s so good, like most I shoot on a harness with 2x cameras and it relegated my A9 to my left side shooting ‘B cam’. The only thing I’d take over to the IV from the a9 is the increased buffer for the confetti shot. The skin tones on the iv are noticeably a lot better than the a9 too. Look forward to watching your video.

      It really is. I haven’t used the A9 series, but I’m hoping to get a copy of whatever the new model is when it comes out just to try.

    Benj, Happy Holidays to you & yours. Just want to say "Thank YOU!" for this video ! I've been a viewer for a while & recently got the A7$ from a Canon 80D & your videos have been most helpful, but this one, mad me feel better about learning a new system & like you pointed out I am finally starting to understand its workflow. Cheers & much success in 2023!

    I´m just starting my wedding photography business and am planing to switch from Canon to Sony mainly because of the lack of 3rd party glass for Canon.
    My idea is having the a7RV as main camera because you can use it in 26MP mode oversampled from 61MP and keep the 26MP when you switch to the crop mode. That way you kind of have 2 lenses in one and you don´t have to carry around 2 cameras all the time. Therefore my planned setup might be a bit unusual:
    Start setup
    1 Sony a7RV as main camera
    1 Sony a6400 succesor as second camera
    Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 G2
    Samyang 35mm 1.4 (for budget reasons, I know there are better options) equals a 52mm 2.1 with 26MP in crop mode
    later include
    Sigma 85mm 1.4 DG DN = 127mm 2.1 in crop mode
    Sigma 50mm 1.4 DG DN (as soon as it comes out) = 75mm 2.1 in crop mode
    Viltrox 23mm 1.4 for the APS-C body
    Tamron 20mm 2.8

    • @jliang70
      @jliang70 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would have passed the last two and go for the Sigma 16-28mm F2.8 or Tamron 17-28mm F2.8 instead of Viltrox 23mm and Tamron 20mm.

    Sometime in the last year Benj put out a video asking for $10K camera kits for various brands. My go to kit would be Sony a7iv, 24mm f1.4, 55mm f1.8, 135mm f1.8, and a sigma 24-70mm f2.8. I made the point that APS-C mode with these primes would fill the gaps. I'm proud to see that it seems Benj has moved to something similar :)

    Currently using a a7iii, but considering SL2-S, A7SIII, or this A7IV. I bought an original Q back when they were first released and absolutely love the shooting experience on a Leica. Second to that would be fuji. As weird as this may sound, I just can’t connect the same with a Sony. I have convinced myself to go all out on Leica but now watching this video and hearing your thoughts have me questioning everything. Haha. Great video, thank you and Happy Holidays!

    • @marcp.1752

      Sony is never being the same shooting experience. Because Sony is #1 an electronics company - and whileas Sony had being very early with digicams into general, -prototypes, it's that before the Fall 2013, Sony never played a role into camera gear business - before the A7 and A7R was being released. They've had only APS-C format before. And they've bought the IP and camera industry literally to the 1st april 2006 from Konica Minolta. The Alpha 850/900 back from 2008/9 was a true KM DSLR design, but not ready before being released.
      Whileas Sony lenses and gear is really good into 2022, they've been always focusing on features - never the shooting experience, like a true, real camera brand since decades, think about Canikon & Fuji, -Leica for instance. I never felt satisfied to shoot my A7, and especially newer iterations, the faux pentaprism hump, the glued-on camera grip, etc...the oddly arranged buttons & switches, -dials. It's not that Sony is perfect into camera usability experience - it never was.
      And especially if one does love simplicity, someone is being much better being served with Fujifilm, or Leica especially. the latter one also does hold it's value quite well, vs. a typical Sony. Not a rant - but just the facts.
      Merry xmas and happy holidays !

    • @marcp.1752
      @marcp.1752 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@iamadil Please consider reviews on DPReview, pro/contra, etc. Into the End, it's all about the lenses, less so about the body. You do invest into a system, hence the lenses, and bodies are being replaced all couple years. That happens here all 5-8 years, whileas other ppl exchange the body all 3-5 years. For filmmaking (which i never do) are way more lenses being avialable, then for APS-C. That means, you should perhaps use a speedbooster. I don't think, that you want to spent like 5-10k, for just a body, and perhaps 2, maybe 3 lenses. It depends very much, which kind of focal length, and too many other unknown variables, what to shoot, how to shoot, for instance product photography, fashion or what else? For portraits, the new XF 75/F1.2 Viltrox is wonderful, onto Fujifilm X-T4/T5. Its very sharp, even at F1.2 aperture, for such a lens. Battery life, weight of the whole package, and many more things are to be considered. There's no universal this and that is best for the task is good enough.

    So wild. I switched from Canon in January to the A74. Finally caved. Shot 14 weddings. DOP corporate stuff. Loathed the color while editing photo and video. Mixed lighting people looked like zombies outside looked fine, S-log was really tough to grade. I just couldn’t handle the color science. I know many make it work but I just cringed at spent way too much time trying to make shit look tire color. Luckily, I purchased it at Best Buy with my Best Buy credit card and got something ridiculous like $400 in Best Buy points. I also purchased all used glass and when I sold all my canon gear back in January most the lenses were still back ordered so I took a very small hit. I’ve got 2 R5C cameras used for a really good price and that camera is imo the absolute best hybrid camera. ✌🏼

    Alright so hear me out.....I own a A7IV as my A cam and i need to get rid of my B cam(a6500) and upgrade, I shoot lots of wildlife,lots of live events, hockey,motocross,weddings, concerts etc, and I can not figure out which camera to get as my secondary cam, or possibly be my new A cam. The sony A7R V is the OBVIOUS choice but the price is so much more than the IV. The A7CII has too many little things that are a no go for me, but the compactness of the CII would be immaculate having like the sony 85mm 1,8 on it, it would be SO small and light, but once again I think there are too many deal breakers for me on that camera. So this leads me to this........Am i crazy for wanting to buy a SECOND IV to be my B cam? The biggest caveat in this all is that i actually shoot a lot of video for my work but I dont want the A7sIII to be my B cam when shooting photos of all these events etc, although it would turn the camera into a total beast because i can film in 120fps no crop. but yeah, am i nuts for wanting to have 2 IVs on me while shooting these events? I can almost buy two IVS for the price of one R V.

    I'm having a bit of a dilemma here... A7rV vs A7mIV. I can get the former here for about 3,2k (USD) and it clearly has a ton of improvements I appreciate, but I honestly don't need 60 megapixels every single time I go out (especially for street photography) I'm also not sure if it can handle high-ISO situations well. Wish the a7mV came out sooner, but we won't see it until late 2024 most likely. EDIT: One huge advantage of having 60 megapixels is that I can switch to APS-C and get way more reach out of my lenses (especially telephoto) and still get 26 megapixels to play with. Kinda wish the next iteration of the m-line could come with 40-45 megapixels, but it won't happen.

    Sony's GM lenses are absolutely excellent - only Canon's very best RF lenses can match them, and maybe a couple like the 135/1.8 and 70-200/2.8 surpass Sony's versions. My current camera is about 5 years old now, I am waiting to see in 2023 what Panasonic do with the follow-up to the S1/S5 and Nikon do with the Z6iii, because really the a7IV and the R6ii meet essentially all of what I need in terms of pure specs. It is just about choosing the system you are most comfortable with in your needs and wants as a photographer. Great video! Anamorphic lenses look fun...how long until Sony makes a G Master anamorphic for E mount?!

      The 24mm GM is easily one of my most favourite lenses ever, but when Fuji can make their 18mm 1.4 virtually perfect in terms of aberration control for almost half the cost of the Sony it does concern me that GM glass isn’t as good as the cost. Just like the canon RF 85 1.2.. it’s an incredible lens but not at 1.2

      I don’t think the 70-200 surpasses the Sony GM II. If it does it’s just splitting hairs on one feature or another. All the latest generation flagship lenses are crazy good from Sony, Nikon and Canon. I just got the GM II, it is stupid nice. The 135 is the older generation of GM, I’ve heard it’s pretty nice but not at the level of the newer generation of GMs.

    • @jliang70
      @jliang70 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think with the E-mount system there are quite a lot of third-party lenses that can match the GM series lens. On the prime lenses Sigma's DG DN 85mm F1.4 is better than GM 85mm F1.4 (which is a bit long in the teeth and needs an update), Sigma 105mm F1.4 surprisingly no competitor in this focal range but it is better than both GM85mm and GM135mm. Tamron 35-150 F2-2.8, Sigma 16mm-28mm or Tamron 17-28mm F2.8 are all excellent zoom lenses. What surprised me a bit is with Sigma. Sigma came out with their superb DG DN 85mm F1.4 almost 2 years ago, it was quite a light 85mm F1.4 barely 625g, I really hoped they can put out 40mm F1.2, 50mm F1.2, or replace the heavy 105mm F1.4 with a lighter replacement or 105mm F1.2 but Sigma seemed to stop producing or developing newer prime lenses for now. Nikon will be interesting. Nikon Z mount is a camera mount that can take advantage and use Sony E mount glass with a techart adapter.

    Thank you for your videos. I am not a wedding photographer. I do landscapes and travel photography. You stated that the autofocus on the Leica SL2S was "not there yet" compared to the two Sony bodies. For me, this is not quite as important as image quality, portability, and weather sealing.
    Earlier this year, you posted a video on the Leica 50mm Summicron-SL on the SL2S. You have also commented extensively and favorably on the Sony 50mm 1.2 GM. I was wondering if you could compare the two? I need a really good 50mm with weather sealing. The combination of the Sony A7RV with the 50mm 1.2 GM would be about a third of a pound lighter than a Leica SL2 with 50mm Summicron-SL. However, would the image quality and character on the Sony setup be similar or comparable to the Leica? Thanks for any help you could give.

    • @benjhaisch
      @benjhaisch  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Howard, yeah that’s a great comparison. For travel/landscape stuff, AF obviously wouldn’t be *as* necessary as with weddings and all of that movement. I really did love both and for me, I’d probably go with the 50/1.2GM for it’s size/weight and extra light gathering, but that 50 Summicron-SL is near perfection in terms of IQ. Not that the 50GM is any slouch, but the 50 Summicron-SL felt like it had medium format levels of detail and quality. Maybe that’s just off of the experience, but it did feel very commercial/editorial.

      Not comparable, Horses for courses. Comparsion between Apples vs Oranges. Perhaps you've not being the right person for Fujifilm, but just Sony. It's the gear industry, which always tell ya, 35mm digital is better than APS-C, whileas X-Trans APS-C is excellent, for many things.

      Ok, I love Sony. I’ve a a7r4 and A7c with 20G, 135GM, 24-70GMII, 35, 50, 85mm, +++ … lenses and they make the job but I’m disappointed because since 2020, Sony didn’t release new firmware for these cameras and lenses.
      I’ve also the amazing Fuji X-H2, +++ … and Fuji released a lot of firmware.
      Same for Leica SL-2S and Q2, firmware are regularly delivered 😅

    I miss using manual focus M-mount lenses (used to shoot bessas in the 00s). Right now I'm a fuji X guy, and while manual focusing is possible, it's not awesome. (also, cropped, bleh.) I'm working on getting a used sl2-s cuz it sounds like that might be the best platform for m-mount lenses (aside from actual m cameras). How is the experience of using m-mount lenses on this sony?

      @@joetrent4753 I've tried several different manual focus lenses (ttartisan, 7artisan) on my fuji cameras. I've used focus peaking. I've tried without. I've tried punch-in, etc. Yes, I can focus it, but it's just not a happy-making experience for me. It's been many years since I actually held rangefinder cameras in my hands, but I remember it being much easier. (And maybe it is only nostalgia, but maybe it was just easier.)

    • @saramdipm

      Using M mount lenses on the A7IV is not as good as manually focusing E mount lenses. When you turn the focus ring on a native lens the auto magnifier automatically kicks in. When you stop turning the ring for a second or do a half shutter press the focus magnification kicks out. When you combine that with focus peaking it becomes a snap to quickly focus even with the low-res EVF. I'm very happy with manual focus on native lenses. Without electronic contacts that let the camera know that you are turning the focus ring, which is what you get with adapted lenses, you have to assign a custom button to use the focus magnifier, which is perfectly fine. Unfortunately, you can only exit focus magnification by either pressing the custom button and toggling through all of the focus magnification levels or setting a 2s or 5s timeout on the focus magnifier. That makes the experience frustrating compared to using E mount lenses. It would be trivially fixable in firmware. All they have to do is make a half-press end focus magnification when it is initiated by the focus magnifier button just as it does with auto magnification turned on. If you don't use focus magnification for manual focus, then it's perfectly fine as-is.

      Disregard everything I just wrote. I just discovered that if you set "AF in Focus Mag" to "Off" then manual focus with my M-mount lenses works as I would like. With this setting, a half-press exits focus magnification when using a lens that doesn't communicate to the camera. Because of course that's what it does. Am I glad I took the time to reply to you! I'll be walking around with old Nikkors and Leica lenses soon.

    I've been extremely disappointed by the A7iv in a specific case : people running, cloudy weather, 70 200 f2.8 GM2. Great subject recognition and tracking, but only 30 % of sharp pictures. Many back focused, especially people with long hair. Unusable for this case.
