Very thorough evidence based study you did here! It continues to be interesting how the 28 remains a worthy car and has not deteriorated enough out there, for it to be forgotten, so to say (or deteriorated at all even!).
So, it seems the Kona uses about 30% more energy than the Ioniq. So while the Kona's battery is more than double the size, some of that disappears through that reduced efficiency. However, the Kona has so much of it, it makes up for it.
To me, I'm not liking the Kona enough, to upgrade from the Ioniq. The Ioniq might not look like a mini suv, it's longer and the rear seating and trunk space is bigger in the Ioniq.
I say if you want to upgrade, pick the Niro, as it's a bit more stretched out. The Kona is just too compact, length wise.
The Ioniq continues to be a joy with its reasonably fast charging for the size of battery, cargo space is very underrated where some might think "meh, it's just a sedan, like a civic or more compact even". Ride wise, nothing wrong with the Ioniq. A tad noisy because insulation isn't great, but then, the Kona and Niros apparently suffer from that same problem.
Acceleration wise, Ioniq is just fine. Just don't compare yourself, and noone will ever get a chance to "win".
The only reason I see for the Niro (or Kona), for me any way, is a longer first segment in a long trip. After the first charge, it becomes about charging speed, and the Ioniq doesn't have any problems there where one might say "damn that's slow". With the 28 that is. The 38, as we all know, isn't quite as snappy with its charging.
So, Niro, nice to have, but what is one actually gaining... faster acceleration - and I bet some really do it for *just* that, but won't admit it. I say it's irrelevant if you avoid road battles.
Space wise, it's not an upgrade. Even from the 28 to the 2nd generation Niro. That's hard to believe, but on paper that's what it is. You're figure with the Niro to can stack things higher. Perhaps the official numbers aren't measured correctly. Even I have a tiny bit of a hard time believing it.
But other than that, range... if local run-abouts are withing the 28's range, what's the point of hauling around a larger battery? If the "upgrade" doesn't cost much, then ok. But shelling out like 15 grand to trade it up? It's a hard sell, imo.
Also nice, is getting a kick out of driving the most efficient car on the road - where I am anyway.

Thanks. All excellent thoughts. Just one minor point of divergence: yes old kona is too 'compact' ie tight on space but new kona is excellent, and in fact great use of 4.35m to better seat 5 adults and with better luggage capacity than the 4.45m of Ioniq. EV first architecture shows its benefits there. Fully agreed on everything else.

@@evdabbler I see my notes were incomplete (I keep notes on all the choices I find interesting). Indeed the 2nd Kona looks like it has a little more more cargo room than the 2nd Niro even. The 1st Niro has a lot more than the 1st Kona.
There is a maybe maybe we might flip the main car which is a gas car, to an EV also. Thing is, the Ioniq has become the main car, because the gas car feels so clumsy now. In theory we could flip that a Kona. Oh, these first world problems.... lol.
Anyway, you've got France written all you, yet you live in the UK? Doesn't that going back and forth between right and left driving make you go nuts? 🙂

Very interesting. There was no doubt about which EV is the best. The only question was how much better. After four years with my 38 kWh, I'm still just as happy. Yes, it has really bad fast charging but I charge at home more than 95% of the time. It is also a shame that Hyundai stopped producing the model. What is positive is that the Ioniq Electric is available to buy second-hand at affordable prices. As a commuter car it's perfect for everyone.

      Indeed.

    30% is shockingly bad!
I feared 20%, which would be bad enough but the running cost is going to be considerably higher - for little benefit other than to gain 'range'.

      @evdabbler  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

It does not make it better but to note a 30% increase on fuel is only a 2.9% increase in total cost of ownership for my car and I do c18k km a year.

Each BEV will lose against the Ioniq 28.

TBH, it was expected that even old EV is much more efficient than brick shaped like vehicle, with much higher weight and much worse tires.
I wonder where did the trend "we don't care for efficiency" started and how quickly it will die out ... probably when people realize that 110 kWh of battery in the car isn't quite an ideal solution to the "range problem" or maybe some regulation that currently affect ICE/hybrid vehicles will be adapted to limit production of inefficient EVs.

In that respect an interesting development is what happened in Paris where a big penalty on parking for EVs > 2t is being introduced. To note the kona is c250kg more than Ioniq classic and below that 2t limit by some margin though.
