Though not too much opportunity for confusion since I own no diesel fueled engines...though I did at least label the canister “Gasoline” for reference....just as I have an old 5 gallon red steel gasoline canister labeled “USED OIL”, but it is rather unique as I don’t own any other similar looking canisters and it has bright yellow “USED OIL” labels all over it so that nobody mistakes it for gasoline!

Well, I grabbed the wrong nozzle and put 1/2 tank of diesel in before I noticed. Long story short I told him what I did and he filled it the rest of the way with gas. We took it on our trip and the hesitation and backfire it had since he bought it magically disappeared. Another time I put gas in a diesel tractor. I siphoned as much out as I could but not enough to prevent the fuel filter from gelling. I claimed no knowledge that time.

I don't have time for his mess, never did look at it for him. Months later my bro and I are going to cut wood for our parents, and I comment to him that's odd, both my saw gas and bar oil(stored in a gas can, hehe) cans are empty. We share a look, him wide eyed, "there was bar oil in that can!?"

It's an olive coloured industrial unit with the heavy duty air filter but looks just yours, EY15 is familiar, model is W1-145 I think... Couldn't get the jeezless thing to run either. Eventually found out the petcock was the issue, so it was promptly neutered and replaced with the finest quality chinesium dingus in a thread that was close enough.
Things been running great for a few years now, even through many hours with definitely not enough oil, no governor, the remaining coarse wire screen of the filter and a 200lb gorilla at the controls.

The shortest race in the season was 6 hours, the longest was 11. 11 f*cking hours in the f*cking rain with 50-something go-karts doing over 550 laps, all of them with the same twin-engined generator drone. Back in college I lived in a semi-crappy neighborhood in Phoenix, AZ. For economy and to make sure I was never distracted by attractive females trying to talk to me during my crucial time of studious concentration, I replaced my big block Impala with a diesel Rabbit. Awesome. But it got almost 50mpg....until some fool boosted the pump. Then it went slightly faster but now only got 42mpg. One day I was headed out the door to get to school, I see my fuel door open and cap dangling.
Some cocklick had siphoned bout 5 gallons of diesel leaving me bone dry. I had to enlist the neighbor for a ride to the fuel emporium for a few gallons to get to school.
That evening when I returned home with a full tank and a locking cap, the same neighbor who sponsored a lift to the pumps, a shade tree mechanic and close personal friend of mine, summoned me to his home shop. There resided a 1975 Monte Carlo. Hood up. Air cleaner on the fender, float bowl on the bench. He hand me the bowl.....says "SMELL IT!"...... I whiff......diesel. We located the fool who purloined my fuel oils.
No one said anything to him. The car suffered all manner of little calamities one night. Tires slashed. More diesel in the tank. It's not hard to pull the remote cable on the hood and fill a crank case full of brake dust as collected from doing drum bakes on trucks. Locks shot full of glue. Main harness cut into more convenient sections.
That 5 gallons of diesel cost that kid a lot of money.

One spring I went to start a lawnmower that was shared with some other people, it was making a truly terrible smell and running really badly, had a peak in the fuel tank and there was a blue liquid sitting at the bottom. No idea how, but it had been filled up with antifreeze. Drained that into a very old and clearly labelled petrol can, 'old, don't use'. Months later I needed some fuel for the car, grabbed a full new can out the shed, emptied it in, only realised at the end that some genius had swapped the antifreeze/stoneage fuel mix into a good can.
It was an interesting drive into town to get more actual fuel...

Another version that I've experienced is a used 2ltr lemonade bottle being kept in a car as windscreen wash/coolant top-up, but with the label fully intact. Enter a family holiday scenario where we each help to unload our respective cars, followed by me deciding to try the lemonade in the fridge mixed with some orange juice. The cloudiness was hidden by the orange juice, but multiple checks on whether there had been a sewage leak somewhere nearby before realising that the 'lemonade' that I was drinking had been rolling around in a car for the better part of 2 years.......if the label was removed it would have been simple logic as to what it was, but a fully intact bottle label (with good pressure when squeezed!) meant that it ended up living in the fridge at the holiday house and ultimately in my glass!
