I remember as a youth working on a horse farm having to use several of the products you mentioned to include neetsfoot oil on the leather saddles & bridles to clean, protect, and soften them. Very good informative video.
I have a 30-year old leather jacket that I bought in the glory days of Century 21 in NYC. I’ve never done a thing to it. It has quite a patina - but has gone beyond patina to feeling dryish and a little papery. Even has a fraying look around the collar that must be rot. I will go ahead and condition. Thanks for the video!!
Lexol makes a gentle cleaner and a conditioner that would work great for a leather jacket. I often see them at my local automotive and hardware stores. I mostly wipe my jacket down with a damp rag gently dabbed in saddle soap and hang it up to dry overnight. Then I lightly apply Kiwi Leather Lotion by hand, about once per year, depending on wear frequency. I would not oil a nice leather jacket unless it's in dire straits, but that's just me.
I have 3 perfecto, my first one I got in 1980. I'm still using it for the last 2 one. I got 2002 and 2022. They last forever they're American made they feel great and look even better as they get old, I used to ride a motorcycle but not anymore but I still wear them .they look the best with jeans
I’ve had more jackets than I care to admit, ok I will say it. At least 100 jackets from old 1960’s Sears to schott, aero vanson and many more. I have washed almost all of my jackets in the washing machine or hand washing and I have never lost a jacket. I wear them regularly too. Hang to dry and they need to dry kinda quickly so I do a wash in the summer months. Afterwards, I condition them and sometimes I have to condition them a couple of times. Always like new. I admit it was scary at first with a high end jacket but being careful, take your time and you will love it.
A nice quality well fitted leather jacket is definitely a staple for every man. Best investment you can make. Bought one for 1000 bucks. Best purchase i have made and love it.
Yeah I hope we were clear that you can just wipe down wit ha wet rag and then apply with conditioner, the saddle soap and pre wax is just if you want to be extra :)

you can find very lightly worn “second hand” ones online for considerably cheaper. you’d be surprised how many people out there don’t have the patience to break them in and will get rid of them after only wearing them a handful of times. poshmark and depop usually have a good selections. i’ve seen barely worn schott jackets that haven’t formed a shape yet for as low as $200
For conditionning: Renovetine by Saphir in a spray can. Greasy stains (collar): One or more applications of Hussard. Dirty lining? Have it replaced by a better quality lining than offered by most manufacturers by your local seamstress.

Nice video! I've recently become aware of Schott because I'm researching one of their peacoats. Any chance your viewers would be interested in a video on those?

I have a brand new 641hh and want to enjoy it without letting my-ocd take over-if something happens, like bird droppings or something terrible like someone's drunk alcohol soaked hands. I have used a light cleaner/conditioner called Bickmore 4 on many of my leather stuff which seems great-in fact I add a small amount to a spay bottle and mix a little distilled water in to more easily apply and wipe surfaces and cracks. I feel the Italian horsehide is pretty tough, but what would you all consider beyond lightweight Bickmore 4? Also, I have a new 626vn coming in 'vintaged' cowhide, and plan to use Bickmore 4 and a smaller concentration of distilled water solution, but welcome other ideas-as I believe this is a waxy cowhide? Hopefully my comment helps anyone.
Any oil with the least smell to it will work on leather more or less the same way, mink oil for boots will work way better than food - grade oil so, yes. Here in Mexico there aren't many conditioners in the market so we have to use a single oil (Castor) for either boots, jackets, purses, bags, belts, saddles, wallets, straps... I'd say go for it
only issue is that schott jackets are really made for "full size" people. they're not great-looking on leaner types. too much excess material. too much "pooch."
@@stormzybanksyI just bought an 80s barely worn schott on ebay and I can see that a bit. Im a very tall and lean build so I got a 38L and just about every part of the jacket fits extremely well besides the biceps which poof out a lot, still looks sick as hell though so im gonna keep wearing it. I can probably get the sleeves tailored a bit if they bother me too much.
Honestly from what I’ve learned, any quality leather only needs one thing, just wear it, then wear it again and enjoy it period. Unlike boots that are on the ground, you don’t have to stress about the jackets. Leather on!
Oil will be better than waxes in that case. Also the warmth of your body/environment and time will naturally help. But if you're specifically asking about leather *jackets*, and not just leather in general, then if it's something like a stiff horsehide, not much will "soften" it other than temporarily with acute warmth. The jacket molding to the body will making it feel more comfortable too, which does take time if it's a new, stiff jacket.
Oils and body heat are the greatest combination for that. People always suffering from breaking in jackets or boots but if they gave a couple hands of oil (Or even saddle soap cleaning because it does have oils) it will soften it heavily. Same for boots, gloves and such. Other leather goods are better off being firmer like belts or saddles or certain parts of jackets, when riding a bike you want the inner section of the sleeves and upper back to be supple but the front, sides, sleeve outer and back overall to be way more rigid to withstand a fall or such. Waxes are useful for softening since they also nourish the leather, but need heat to soften. That is why you put on a waxed jacket and it is kinda rigid when it is fresh / cold out of the closet and starts softening up as you wear it.
Guys serious question! How you remove the arm pit smell from these high end jackets due to daily use as wearing a leather jacket all the time can get some dank smell in it especially if the jacker has a polyester internal lining?
How much customization of the jacket do you allow? Can i change the lining, the number of pockets, the type of pockets, whether to gave or not have cuffs? please tell me.
I went to their flagship store a few weeks ago and Schott does alterations but they no longer do customs. So they can take things off or hem things but they cannot add things that were not already there.
