I remember seeing this on TBS when I was a kid. I liked both Dusty and the Road Warriors and I did not know what to do. I remember seeing their match and all I did was cheer because I liked them both.
I loved this as a kid. Its just there was nothing you could do to make the Road Warriors heels. Hawk & Animal (R.I.P.) could've Doomsday'd a baby & I would've cheered LOL. I was 7yrs old at that time. The only thing that COULD HAVE worked IMHO to make them heels would be to turn them, ditch the face paint & spikes for suits & put them in The 4 Horsemen (pause).
It's crazy today when I'm driving down the road it was filmed on a) how much its changed and b) the fan in me is like This is the road the horsemen followed Dusty down!! Lol...
Jimmy Cornette, I think this angle about Dusty getting spiked by Animal and Hawk goes back to when the Russians took a cement block and hit Animal in the head with it and caused injury to Animal's orbital bone in the Greensboro Coliseum because Animal had to have a drainage tube put in between is eye and his nose at that time
King of The Hell fan as well. I do remember the Saturday night of watching this with my grandparents because my parents didn't have cable yet . I grew up in southwest Va 30 minutes north of Johnson City, TN. NWA, Memphis Wresting and later on in the early 90's Smoky Mountain Wresting. I moved to Ohio in Nov . 95 with my girlfriend and now my wife of 21years . We stopped watching WWE/old WWF . Old school wrestling is dead & gone. Its sad but thanks to all the Real Wrestling Fans i can find about anything i want on TH-cam. Buddy landel was my parents neighbor , as i lived in Chilhowie ,Va all my life. I moved away for 3 years and within a year or two Buddy moved in 5 house's down from Mom & Dad. We miss Buddy dearly and all the old school wrestling days .
I hated Buddy because he claimed he was the "Real Nature Boy" and in my neighborhood (Baltimore, MD) RIC FLAIR was the ONLY Nature Boy, Brother!! Whooooooo!!
all Dusty could do in the later stage in his wrestling career was the elbow, so cant say he was all that great in his late wrestling career...Tremendous booker throughout his career except all the dumb shit he did...
I believe, in my honest opinion, that the downfall of wrestling on the superstation can be traced back to this moment. What did Dusty think would happen? In defense of WTBS, they had to watch their ass, or risk being confronted by the FCC. I would fail as a booker, but what could have worked, was to have the Road Warriors ALMOST spike Dusty. Imagine the fans on the edge of their seat " Oh my God, oh my God, their going to spike big Dust!" Bring them to that edge, and then none other than the Midnight Express run in to save the day. BOOM! The Road Warriors are instant heels, and the MNE are beloved more than ever. It could have changed history.
There is all kinds of violence blood and sex on cable tv even back then walker texas ranger , in the heat of the night and and wwf raw just to name a few and fcc did not get turner was just afaraid kids would mimic and he would sued when realy a legal discliamer and seting wcw up as LLC would have obsolved him of all libility and dusty told him this and listen
Oh yeah...if Death of WCW was right, Dusty did that because he was pissed off at both TBS for banning weapon shots and blood on TV and he was pissed at Jim Herd because Herd overruled Dusty on having Ric Flair drop the title to Rick Steiner.
TBS got what they deserved for trying to ban blood on TV. How the hell can you ban blood in a combat sport? How naive could they be to think they knew more about how to run pro wrestling than Dusty Rhodes? They didn't have any idea about how the wrestling business worked. All these guys are supposed to get punched and kicked in the face and somehow never bleed? That exposed the business entirely. So TBS deserved to go out of business and they did get what they deserved. If you don't want violence on your TV station, don't air combat sports.
Rusty Shackleford ?!?!? Dale Gribble is not only still alive but also watching classic wrestling & sending emails to the greatest Classic Wrestling Historian of all time !
Honestly, this is what made me stop watching Ever since 1984 Dusty and the RW were my absolute favorites and when they team together and Dusty put on the paint...OMG everything was right in the wrestling world. When THIS happened...I was sooo made, I stopped watching. Then they went to the WWF and that What a Rush crap?? That was it... I was done.
When They Made Dusty Come Out in That Polka-Dot-Outfit on TV...That Was Instant Burial. (Dusty Shoulda Wrestled in His SKOAL Jacket...Over-Top of The Polka-Dot-Outfit They Made Him Wear to Bury Him.)
Brian really won't let go of disliking Dusty for continually putting himself over at this time. It's a major irritant to him and he keeps harping on it.
Jeffrey Riley: I think it was partly security but also it was because of a "If you want something done right, gotta do it yourself" attitude. Dusty groomed Magnum to be his replacement somewhat and Flair did the same with Sting and according to Cornette- wanted to also do the same with Pillman.
The dirt sheets buried Rhodes if you go back and read them from this time. It's hard to tell who Meltzer hated more Dusty or McMahon. Bookers always had heat but by 88 it seems Dusty was very unpopular with the boys. Ron Garvin, R&R Express, Tully and Arn all left because of him and Flair would of but the Turner deal hinged on Flair being there. Since Flair was not loyal, Dusty then wanted Rick Steiner to beat Flair in a squash match at Starrcade. Because of his new influence Flair was able to go over Dusty and Crockett and get it changed. Fast forward a few years to 91 and Dusty is back as booker and Flair finally decided it is time to go.
Road Warriors were so over, they had to do something horrible to turn. They should have come in the ring during a Rhodes vs Flair title match and burned them... too much?
The idea of a wrestling manager is hilarious I think. It seems like it's mostly for when you have a wrestler that can't cut a promo without looking like an idiot.
Master Knowledge Road Warrior Animal said it was Dusty's idea. In the Road Warriors biography, he said that all three got chewed out and almost fired for it
What does Brian have against dusty Rhodes and the Rhodes family he’s constantly running them down. Is he jealous because he wasn’t Dusty’s kid ? It just seems very personal to Brian
I remember when the 4 horseman would take a camera and attack Dusty on the parking lot etc.. Pretty brutal stuff...speaking of Gordan being outraged Gordan Solie on Georgia Championship Wrestling ..telling kids to not use these wrestling moves because they can lead to harm. (Bob Roop interups) . " unlezz iz someone you don't like..your little brother or something.." Gordan look mortified.😂
3:39 is the main problem with today's society... One parents don't tell there kids not to do stupid things... Two even if they do tell there kids not to be stupid the kids don't listen and the parents are afraid to smack a child upside the head because of other people calling the cops
I remember seeing this live and it was surprising when I saw it and it sure looked realistic enough! I think Dusty knew what he was doing Cornette is hilarious to listen to.
1988 could be considered a good year going to a bad time for nwa/wcw being arn and Tully leaving, and the Crockett sell, owners.. not liking dusty bloody booking.. literally..
There was something about Tully Blanchard I did not like. It wasn't because he was a heel.; I liked the rest of the Horsemen. I just couldn't put my finger on it. No, I felt like he was a heel in real life. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.
Stan McSerr I agree and think Tully was right when he said that without him The Four Horsemen weren't legit. Flair and Arn were great and easy to like and dislike but Tully just was a heat magnet. No matter what Tully seemed like an asshole.
Stan McSerr He was a little before my time but from what I've seen through DVDs & the network he just looks so small & ordinary looking. It's hard for me to take him seriously as a viable threat to anyone. Having said that I know he was a really good worker but I like Arn better, both on mic & in ring.
I remember watching this at my mom and dad's house when I was home from break in college. I know that they didn't actually stick the spike in his eye, but man this looked real when it happened. Loved the Road Warriors and this made them even seem more savage then they already were!!!
Regardless of opinion of Dusty, I'd been watching NWA/Mid-Atlantic/whatever for several years as a teen, including going to live shows, when this came along. What killed everything was a combination of events. 1) Magnum TA's accident taking one of the biggest up and comers out of play completely. Then 2) The ridiculous attempt to turn the Road Warriors heel. That was just a bad decision on every level. Then 3) Dusty's gone. The bookings go to shit. The shows become barely watchable. I only learned many years later about Dusty's removal because of the "blood spike" incident, and I didn't even know Dusty was the booker back then. But I saw how bad things got after he left, and I found I quickly went from watch-every-week to "is that still on, I forgot about it". I watch random clips from WCW in the early to mid 90s and I realize I didn't miss anything. It never recovered, and started relying on style over substance. And the style was horrid. The glory days never came back.
Dusty did a hell of alot for wrestling but if he hadn't fired Buddy Landel i think us old school wrestling fans could be watching a hell of a lot more of Buddy's matches on TH-cam. Any Buddy Landell fans out there please reply.
You wanna turn the warriors heel. You do it in 1986. And have them destroy and i mean destroy the rock and roll express. And left magnum run in. And get the spike. Boom. Heels in 2mins
Road Warriors never really held the World Tag Belts for any extended period of time.. The Horse Men ran Ruff Shot over the tag belts from 85 to 88.. The Mid Night Express didn't mind playing 2nd fiddle carrying the U.S tag Belts..
Maurice Brodie actually, it was more the Rock and Roll express, as they had four reigns, with the Midnights and Arn and Tully having two reigns apiece. While the Road Warriors were indeed over, it didn't make sense for them to not have the tag belts for a good while ( which didn't happen ).
I remember that angle.. As a kid, I was about 9 years old at the time.. But, I ran outside telling my friends the Road Warriors killed Dusty Rhodes.. Lol.. Yeah, y'all got me on that angle
steamboat didnt like dusty's booking....we wouldnt have got the steamboat flair matches in 89, if scott wasnt the booker...cornette always leaves that out when dissing scott..who -granted- wasnt great in that run
I never watched Nwa or wcw or whatever as a little kid, only wwf. I’m not sure if it even showed up here in pnw. But I still remember hearing about them stabbing dusty with a spike from their pads lol.
Please let’s ask him about what he thinks about having open gay men in the business and what does it do to the business and how the guys feel about it please let him answer that 😂😂😂
Jim's right, there's a lack of common sense in the younger generation today. I grew up watching violent cartoons and the three stooges. Never did I think it would be okay to hit someone with a hammer or run a saw blade over their head. No one had to tell me this, I just knew better. Same with pro wrestling, I always knew it wasn't a legit fight/sport. However, I did know that if you really did some of the moves and holds you would seriously hurt someone or yourself. Like I always said, pro wrestling isn't fake it's fixed. Mad respect to all the wrestlers who endured such pain to entertain me through the years.
" I said a lil blud, kid." 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
LOL, Jim does a GREAT Dusty impression.
"Goddamn it Dale! Rusty Shackleford's just the name you use to order pizza!" gotta love a bit of king of the hill
if you've ever lived in a Texas small town, you know King of the Hill is a documentary.
“All you kids at home, try this on your buddies!”
I remember seeing this on TBS when I was a kid. I liked both Dusty and the Road Warriors and I did not know what to do. I remember seeing their match and all I did was cheer because I liked them both.
Heenan, Cornette, Heyman . . . I can listen to them with my eyes closed and it's still quality entertainment.
Wait, Rusty Shackleford? As in, Dale Gribble?
C'mon, 'sko!!
SHASHASHAA!!!
Thomas Hester No, Rusty Shackleford
pocket sand
someone needs to use that gimmick in wwe
I remember the Patera cinder block angle! LOL! Great stuff! Solie's reaction to Gordy was classic!!
I was horrified watching that shit live on television as a little kid.
Yeah, me, too. Great stuff.
I remember this, but the Horsemen attack on Dusty in the parking lot. That was traumatic to .e! Lolz
It's crazy today when I'm driving down the road it was filmed on a) how much its changed and b) the fan in me is like This is the road the horsemen followed Dusty down!! Lol...
Arn and Tully created the ripple effect and 1988 Crockett selling to Turner ended the best era of wrestling for me
Chris F amen bro
Me too
'Get a 'lil blud, get a 'lil blud...'
Yea I thought Dusty was cool but NO WAY in hell was I gonna Boo the Road Warriors

Check out Innovate Wrestling in East Tennessee or PWX in North Carolina for good, quality old school Southern wrestling.
I hated Buddy because he claimed he was the "Real Nature Boy" and in my neighborhood (Baltimore, MD) RIC FLAIR was the ONLY Nature Boy, Brother!! Whooooooo!!
The Road Warriors should've used pocket sand on Dusty's eye instead of the spike. Would've been far more devastating.
Sha-sha-sha
I loved Dusty's promo on the Roadies not too long after this, promoting his and Sting's tag match against them.
Dusty Rhodes was still good in the ring in his late stage in career and after his in ring work
all Dusty could do in the later stage in his wrestling career was the elbow, so cant say he was all that great in his late wrestling career...Tremendous booker throughout his career except all the dumb shit he did...
I remember seeing this and when the Road Warriors turned on Sting. I was confused as a kid lol I didnt know wether to boo or cheer...so I just stared
Atlantic Grand Prix Wrestling reference at 0:14 made my day!
Damn, one of the few times Jim doesn’t say “if that is your real name.” Because Rusty Shackleford was100% Dale Gribble’s alias on King of the Hill.
why is Dale Gribble writing Jim Cornette?
jd wii no no he's just trying to order a pizza.
because it is real to Dale
What if it's the alien that impregnated Nancy impersonating dale?
Wonderful old school Wrestling VIOLENCE!!!!! 😀 👑🏆
the warriors turned on sting in a six man match they were pissed dusty wasnt there!! setting up the starrcade match vs dusty and sting.
And duthtay eye patch
I remember this when I was a kid. It didn't get more "real" feeling than this.
No doubt! 😂
I believe, in my honest opinion, that the downfall of wrestling on the superstation can be traced back to this moment. What did Dusty think would happen? Dusty was his own worst enemy.
I just read about this situation in JR's book.
TBS got what they deserved for trying to ban blood on TV. How the hell can you ban blood in a combat sport? How naive could they be to think they knew more about how to run pro wrestling than Dusty Rhodes? They didn't have any idea about how the wrestling business worked. Clash of the Champions, I remember this.
Rusty Shackleford ?!?!?
Dale Gribble is not only still alive but also watching classic wrestling & sending emails to the greatest Classic Wrestling Historian of all time !
Love to hear Jim Cornett speak. He tells it like it Absolutely is Lmao.
I'd like to know Cornettes view on Ronnie Garvin turning on Dusty Rhodes during his match with Whindam.
I Believe that It Was a TBS Executives Trying to Censor Dusty, & Dusty Saying that You Don't Tell Him What to Do ...
I was done.
I remember when 4 horsemen broke Dustys arm.
Road Warriors were so over that Dusty got more heat over this than the Warriors.
When They Made Dusty Come Out in That Polka-Dot-Outfit on TV...That Was Instant Burial.
(Dusty Shoulda Wrestled in His SKOAL Jacket...Over-Top of The Polka-Dot-Outfit They Made Him Wear to Bury Him.)
That was when he'd switched to the WWF after this. McMahon had a bad habit of trying to humiliate wrestlers he didn't like.
King of the hill. LMFAO
Brian really won't let go of disliking Dusty for continually putting himself over at this time. It's a major irritant to him and he keeps harping on it.
Jeffrey Riley Flair did the same shit
And both guys should have. Dusty was still huge and Flair had almost ten years left in him.
Jeffrey Riley: I think it was partly security but also it was because of a "If you want something done right, gotta do it yourself" attitude. Dusty groomed Magnum to be his replacement somewhat and Flair did the same with Sting and according to Cornette- wanted to also do the same with Pillman.
well, Dusty needed to step back a little at this time..you gotta remember fans CHEERED the Roadies spiking him.
The dirt sheets buried Rhodes if you go back and read them from this time. It's hard to tell who Meltzer hated more Dusty or McMahon. Bookers always had heat but by 88 it seems Dusty was very unpopular with the boys. Fast forward a few years to 91 and Dusty is back as booker and Flair finally decided it is time to go.
As a kid this was so weird to watch. I had to go with my boys though Road Warriors for life.
The booker never should be wrestling to.... cause they always gonna put there self over most of the time
Road Warriors were so over, they had to do something horrible to turn. They should have come in the ring during a Rhodes vs Flair title match and burned them... too much?
Nope. Hell idve had them doomsday device on a female Face valet.
Damn I remember this as a kid
One of the Saturday nights Dusty is doing a promo and you can hear this kid yelling “BIG FAT WHALEE.”
The idea of a wrestling manager is hilarious I think. It seems like it's mostly for when you have a wrestler that can't cut a promo without looking like an idiot.
Not always. The horsemen could talk
A little disappointed Jim doesn't know King of the Hill
Who had the better spike-to-the-eye spot, Dusty or Terry Funk?
Blast Action "My eye my eye! Lawler! You pig! Lawler's yellow..."
Terry. His voice was so haunting because he never begged. I was convinced he was blind.
I can remember some really piss poor WCW shows during this era....so much so that I watched maybe every other week
I bet this shit was horrifying back in the day watching Dusty get stabbed and shit 😶😶😶
It was, I remember seeing that as a kid. That and the Ron Bass getting Beefcake with the spur were the 2 most horrifying angles.
Sandbagger300 I remember both as a kid in the 80's also and yes it was very violent for that time especially
Master Knowledge Road Warrior Animal said it was Dusty's idea. In the Road Warriors biography, he said that all three got chewed out and almost fired for it
Master Knowledge it fooled my mom. almost didn't get to watch for a while
Ronald Gray the Road Warriors were cheered for it, and they were on their way to the WWF.
Rusty …. Shackleford
What does Brian have against dusty Rhodes and the Rhodes family he’s constantly running them down.
Is he jealous because he wasn’t Dusty’s kid ?
It just seems very personal to Brian
Dusty taking himself off the card may have set the precedence for Vinces (both) to leave themselves off the card...??
I remember when the 4 horseman would take a camera and attack Dusty on the parking lot etc.. Pretty brutal stuff...speaking of Gordan being outraged
Gordan Solie on Georgia Championship Wrestling ..telling kids to not use these wrestling moves because they can lead to harm. (Bob Roop interups) .

good old dale.
This was the first thing I thought of when Jericho stabbed Moxley in the eye here in Miami. Like Jim said, the future of wrestling is in the past😁😁😁
Same here...and yes everything gets a return...look at movies and how for the past fews years it's mostly been big hits from the past.
Dusty tried a Fritz Von Erich!
Eye gouging for the heart attack sympathy card!
I remember seeing this live and it was surprising when I saw it and it sure looked realistic enough! I think Dusty knew what he was doing Cornette is hilarious to listen to.
Ahh piss! I was born in 1978! I watched a bunch of cage matches with bloody beat downs between Flair and Dusty! The backlash was DUMB.
1988 could be considered a good year going to a bad time for nwa/wcw being arn and Tully leaving, and the Crockett sell, owners.. not liking dusty bloody booking.. literally..
Weren't the Road Warriors already Heel when they turned on Sting?
Like before they beat the Midnights for the belts in NOLA.
Tully was a cokehead. He failed a drug test in WWF in 1989.
Stan McSerr He was a little before my time but from what I've seen through DVDs & the network he just looks so small & ordinary looking. It's hard for me to take him seriously as a viable threat to anyone. Having said that I know he was a really good worker but I like Arn better, both on mic & in ring.
Stan McSerr man I was the same way, hated Tully, he seemed stale to me
Stan McSerr I always liked Tully. When I was a kid and my friends and I wrestled I took Tullys style.
I started watching wrestling in ‘82……in hindsight wrestling was great when Dust was booking. It wasn’t like he had a HHH reign of terror
6:18 haha
I remember watching this at my mom and dad's house when I was home from break in college. I know that they didn't actually stick the spike in his eye, but man this looked real when it happened. Loved the Road Warriors and this made them even seem more savage then they already were!!!
Common sense is something most people just don't have anymore
Did I not see Ivan koloff go in that ring to help run off the Road warriors? I guess this is after he turned face
Dont think so
Regardless of opinion of Dusty, I'd been watching NWA/Mid-Atlantic/whatever for several years as a teen, including going to live shows, when this came along.

Dusty did a hell of alot for wrestling but if he hadn't fired Buddy Landel i think us old school wrestling fans could be watching a hell of a lot more of Buddy's matches on TH-cam. Any Buddy Landell fans out there please reply.
Travis Harper
[tumbleweed blows by]
Travis Harper Present ☺
nah, Buddy Landel, Gino Hernandez, etc. there were a few that just thought more of themselves than they ever were.
He got his ass kicked by Butch Reed for shouting racial slurs.
I really like Buddy and I just saw his 90-91 run but thought he was hilarious.
Nowadays, this would be common place...
King of the Hill reference
Rusty Shackelford.. aja Dale gribble
Rusty Shackleford.....wait...Dale?
dat damn Rusty I thought that powerbomb put him down for good Imma find you Rusty
It was a good one.....
This is why wrestling was so great u gotta watch the reactions and the locker room clearing out. It seemed so real
I was in Carolina at the time and people were sick of Dusty.
Dale gribble is a fan of jim cornette not to surprised
I write from the Mid- South area
I like to listen to these with my smoking mountain wrestling T-Shirt on. Jim is a wrestling time machine and it's great.
I also watched this live as an 8 year old
Rusty Shackleford

th-cam.com/video/o5Q2MaUNOJU/w-d-xo.html here is the angle footage
Dirty Rhodes got spiked !
Holy shit, they actually cheered the dynamic dudes?
14 twelve year old girls, and one boy did.
@@itsterrific that one boy grew up and changed his name to Meltzer.
jim makes a lot of excuses for dusty's booking.
Dusty was known as a bleeder
You think. Lol 😆
lol jim is great
I bet that if tbs could have a do over they'd never have let dusty go
I remember that angle..
As a kid, I was about 9 years old at the time..
But, I ran outside telling my friends the Road Warriors killed Dusty Rhodes..
Lol..
Yeah, y'all got me on that angle
Dale Gribble?
steamboat didnt like dusty's booking....we wouldnt have got the steamboat flair matches in 89, if scott wasnt the booker...cornette always leaves that out when dissing scott..who -granted- wasnt great in that run
I never watched Nwa or wcw or whatever as a little kid, only wwf. I’m not sure if it even showed up here in pnw. But I still remember hearing about them stabbing dusty with a spike from their pads lol.
A Tosh.0 shout out from Cornette? Didn't know he was a fan.
That just about killed WCW
Cornette is wrong. People were sick of Dusty.
Please let’s ask him about what he thinks about having open gay men in the business and what does it do to the business and how the guys feel about it please let him answer that 😂😂😂
