Yeah this was a tech showcase on the Amiga in '89. Was jaw dropping back then, but really wasn't the funnest game in the world because of the difficulty. But man did it look gorgeous on a Commodore RGB monitor.

The genesis port was actually a “port” of the European PAL mega drive version but they forgot to adjust the speed for NTSC so it actually runs way too fast. Congrats, you guys played the hard mode!
I was thinking the same as you too. What makes it worse is some elements are quite clearly running too fast, like the music and climbing animation. I believe the copy sent to them was the PAL version though
@@truxton701 Pal and Ntsc games for the most part are identical. It's the whether it's played on a genesis or pal megadrive that determine its speed. Exceptions are games like Sonic 2 which was optimised to run on the pal megadrive. So it will run extra fast when played on a genesis

Completed it as a kid. Still have the TShirt and Amiga version box! At the time it really got my imagination going and I used to sit and think of cool ways to make the stiff gameplay better.
Psygnosis is also listed as a developer as well as a publisher. The game has the same level of quality and visuals as other Psygnosis titles as well. Also Psygnosis still technically exists.
This is not a a bad game. You really need strong focus on it. I rented it as a kid and got nowhere in it for the day or two I had it. But as and adult, I sat with patience and took my time and in the end, it turned out to be a pretty good adventure game with a lot more add on's and better weapons and jet packs. Once you master it, it is a rewarding game.
+Bruno Stimulating? Great atmosphere with amazing music and a real sense of creepiness to the game and elements of puzzle/adventure game mechanics. Rewarding? Difficult games once completed offer a far greater reward than easy games. These two idiots act like spoilt little children in this video. If they can't push right and mash attack when they do these quick, ill-researched reviews they just give up and blame the game.
Well, there's some fun in seeing all nonsense Bosch creatures the game throws at you. Used a trainer software to beat it just to see everything it offers (that was like 10 years ago though, guess I'd just googled a video LP now instead).

This has probably been mentioned before but the reason Shadow of the Beast is so unwinnable (and IIRC it was literally unwinnable?) is because it was ported from Amiga, which the game was originally made for, and somebody cocked up the port. I would love for James and Mike to play the original Amiga version some time, and make a comparison between the two versions.
the main reason why its a terrible port is because it was originally made for 50hz pal, ntsc is 60hz, thats why the music speed and gameplay speed is all wrong, making the hit detection screwed up
I could never get into this game back when my buddy had it on the amiga, but the music was cool. But then we abandoned the amiga alltogether for the nes.

If you think the artwork style seems familiar it is because Roger Dean who made the art worked on Asia ,Yes, Uriah Heep, Budgie and many many more album covers , focused on fantasy .

This is a port. The original and best Beast is only on the Amiga. Beast was more renowned for it's amazing Amiga soundtrack than actual gameplay. Psygnosis. One of the great studios.
The Amiga version surpasses the Genesis and all others. The Genesis version doesn't showcase how good it really is including graphics and the awesome soundtrack.

look up an amiga playthrough, this was the kind of game you had to grow up with and spend years remembering enemy placements and working out the sequence to collect items to progress further. all points you mentioned like "at least put a wall there" were actually done in the amiga original. i'd honestly take the sms port over the genesis one, but the amiga original is still the best, the ps4 reboot is underrated aswell.
I had this game for my Sega Master System as a kid, and I did manage to beat it. For the Master System the graphics were pretty amazing... They somehow managed to do parallax scrolling on the overworld section. I thought it was great back then, but I did notice all of the problems playing it as an adult.
I had this game as kid, and I used to do what Mike says: just go to the fucking right all the time. Literally took me yeeeears until I realised that you suposed to go to the left. And by the way, the well is not an entry, but the exit from the underworld that you acess by entering the tree.
This game's like running through a gauntlet of killer Halloween decorations, love it! But the controls are assticky AF! Also the artwork was heavily inspired by those trippy YES! album covers by Roger Dean, that's what the blimp is a reference to.

Had this on the Amiga 500 when I was a kid in the late 80s. The graphics were unbelievable for the time and I still look at it fondly for the amazing creature design and the atmosphere. It's still a brutally unfair, poorly designed game world with stiff, shitty controls and trial and error play style, but it's still charming as hell.
Anyone ever seen a movie in the late 80s of a kid saving up to buy a computer and one day he goes inside a computer shop and plays this game and was so impressed with it ?

The game played looked and sounded best on the Amiga with a micro switch joystick. The graphics where about 20% better but the music and sound was literally incredible

The US version was 10X harder because it wasn't speed adjusted from PAL. So it runs 20% faster.

The art work in this game reminds of the style of artwork I did when I was a kid and preteen. The visuals as such felt nostalgic and comforting!

It's still a brutally unfair, poorly designed game world with stiff, shitty controls and trial and error play style, but it's still charming as hell.

This game was a showcase for the Amiga music and graphics. It had no business being on the Genesis 5 years later.
DMA Design who made this also made Lemmings and became Rockstar (Grand Theft Auto).
Anyone ever seen a movie in the late 80s of a kid saving up to buy a computer and one day he goes inside a computer shop and plays this game and was so impressed with it ?

quality of games like Speedball 2, Turrican, Cannon Fodder, Lemmings, James Pond 2 and Another World, just to name a few, is hard to deny
The best part is that the art was done by Roger Dean, best known for tons of Asia album covers in the 80s, and several other prog rock bands.

Morphing into the different forms in altered beast was the best feeling. And the sounds that went with it.
Hasn't aged very well mechanically in my opinion.
The game played looked and sounded best on the Amiga with a micro switch joystick. The graphics where about 20% better but the music and sound was literally incredible
This game looked hella impressive when it was new, but it doesn't have the gameplay to back up the graphics and sound...
Also, only the Amiga and Turbo CD versions are worth playing...
