I remember trying so hard to like this game as a kid. Getting a game was rare when you had no money as a child, so you had to learn to like the crap games.

The top screen literally does not need to exist. It is only giving you 2/3rd's of the information needed to succeed while the bottom screen is giving you 100% of the information you need. It should be reversed or they shouldn't have included the top screen at all. It's utterly baffling game design.
Or they just shouldn't have had a plane racing level to begin with. I have to assume most people who bought this back in the day thought they would be getting some sort of licensed platformer.

Worst thing about it is that it can't have been trivial to implement. Even disregarding the redundant code, there's so much going on graphically. Lots of scaling and shit. It sucks but I can see the work that went into it.

Yeah its pretty bad, as soon as i understand what was happening i thought that the screens should be reversed, is like in top gun where all the crucial information is on the bottom and the plane part is just for show

The cut scene art is fantastic, the game is a dumpster fire.
It's impressively bad. Usually when James and Mike throw in the towel on a game, I want to see more of it. On this one, I kept hoping that James would pull the plug. The controls on the race portion are so very bad, it makes you wonder if it was play tested.
That's an insult to dumpsters.

This is a PC port. The game was originally published by Disney Software in 1991 as PC game and then published on the SNES on 1992. I remember playing it on PC.
I can relate to this episode more than most. I had this as a kid and I HATED it. I remember being so confused by the plane race at the beginning and throwing the game near the end of my shelf with the rest of the crap.
It's a truly terrible game. You should have tried to get a refund.
As someone who's not a fan of racing games, I detested games that I assumed were going to be platormers but had racing levels as a kid.
The only racing game I liked was one where I could run over cows. My friends and I called it "Kill the Cow." LOL XD Drive over as many cows as you can before the timer ran out. Modern racing games don't take place near farms anymore. I guess racing game companies just caught on. LOL
Indeed and that is how carmagedon became a thing. I miss A2 racer more though. If you took a VW beetle and your car was damaged enough you could scoop up a cop or 2 in that luggage trunk up front. with the "Watch replay" Feature you'd have a a ball just watching you and your buddies replays.
I bought that game thinking I was going to have a fun platformer.
I returned it the next day.

Rented this with my friends in elementary school and we never made it past the races. I'm glad to see we weren't missing anything good. I hope the people who designed this found another line of work.

Those graphics with the plane going in a circle are actually pretty impressive for the SNES.
I take it you haven't played much SNES. That graphics suck. Go play any DK or Mario game, especally Mario Kart. Or Pilotwings. Or Star Fox. Or any Mortal Kombat. Or anything really. I have a much harder time finding worse graphics. It's just a digitizes photo, it looks like Hong Kong 97.
I was mainly talking about the perspective effect when the plane is flying away from and then back towards the foreground. Other than that I agree they're nothing special.
Agreed. Even though it's just pre-rendered sprites exactly as Donkey Kong and Mario Rpg did it, because there's only one background, the plane's graphics/animations could be made specifically for it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's some sort of programming or technical wonder, I just think it's a neat looking visual effect by the standard of what was generally seen at that time. (certainly moreso than I would expect to find in a game of such poor overall quality) It's the one thing in this game that looks like it had some effort and thought put into it.
Oh well the plane is kinda nice.
I remember liking this game as a rent. I was a big aviation fanatic as a kid. I loved ww2 warbirds, and flying RC and control line airplanes. So when I saw the pylon racing, I went ape shit. It was a rare thing to see real airplanes like this modeled in a game, and the photo realistic background looked awesome to me. For some reason the stores never had pilotwings to rent and I never even knew it existed until I found out about pilotwings for n64. So before then, rocketeer was a novelty to me, but still, only worth a rent.
I think Mike solved the puzzle. The game designer was probably tasked with creating a Rocketeer game and they went, "Man, I don't feel like doing that, let me recreate this Atari game that I liked as a kid instead."

Yeah, the NES version is NOT as bad as the SNES, but it has it's own flaws like pretty much you only hear about 3 songs over and over during the stages.
They played the NES version already and enjoyed it.

I had this on PC and could never work out the controls and even when you did, it was impossible to win. I'm glad you guys also agree on this.

I remember renting this from Blockbuster when I was a kid, the only thing I remember about the game was the races but I liked it.I want to say I remember being the plane and losing. Then you got the jetpack and you were significantly faster and could win no problem. But I was 6 or 7 at the time though, so my memories of it are anything but reliable. When I saw the race screen, it was exactly what I was picturing from before.

Only watch the bottom screen and stay as far left as you can without hitting the poles. Going right slows you down, going left speeds you up.

Mike mentions the Twilight Zone and the episode "Will The Real Martian Please Stand Up" Which was Episode 28 of Season 2. The first of 2 martians was the owner of the diner where the entire story takes place. He keeps his true identity hidden up until the very end of the episode where he takes off his cap to reveal a 3rd eye in the middle of his forehead. One of my favorites, and the actor Barney Phillips who had numerous roles in the series as it was in CBS from 1959-1964.

From what I remember when I was 8, you’ve gotta watch the window at the bottom and keep the plane in the middle as best you can....
Seeing how neither of you ever noticed the amount of LAPS needed to win at the bottom, and constantly saying "Did I won?" "I don't know", was both funny and discomforting.
I remember there being Game Genie codes where you can skip the races and automatically win them. Now I know why those codes were added haha. Damn Mike is a hell of a good gamer.
I remembered liking this one as a kid, although the last time I played it was whenever this originally came out so I don't remember a lot of details. I do remember being stuck on the races at the start though. It's actually not nearly as hard as James and Mike make out once you know what to do. The key is to ONLY look at the bottom screen. Nothing on the top main screen in useful. Just stay all the way to the left except for moving right just enough to dodge the pole. Just do that and you'll crush the races easily. It's still shitty design there but that's how you do it.
The intro flying scenes were my favorite. It was painful to watch them not even try hitting left and right on the Dpad. Let play - Old people can't figure out a kids game.
The subtitles at the very beginning say superintendent when James says Super Nintendo and I think thats hilarious princeskiple skinner

My favorite piece of trivia about The Rocketeer is that the movie starring role was offered to singer/songwriter Richard Marx, who turned it down.

A SNES game to surpass The Wizard of Oz.
Sometimes you guys sure take a little long to figure stuff out. Your objective is to keep on the left side of the bottom screen while dodging the poles. You are flying in a counter-clockwise circle after all and you can see that the yellow plane goes faster than the other two as you stick to the left side of the bottom screen. The two screens have literally been switched out, which is hilariously dumb.
As a 10 year old boy I remember thinking to myself, I don’t know if video games are for me.
I remember try to play this game when I was 4 years old and being frustrated to tears! You have to fly as far to the left as possible and duck out of the way of the poles right when you approach it. It definitely takes your hands to cramp city!

This is the main reason why you shouldn't make an AVGN review for this game, because we now already know that the game is terrible. Unexpected jokes and humor (from before you started J&M Mondays) made the reviews a lot better in my opinion.

I'm so glad you have a new video out to enjoy. I'm having a bad day. Someone broke into my house and stole all my gaming hardware and computer, they even took the SNES and my copy of E.V.O. 😫. That one game took years to finally be able to even afford it and now it's gone. I fucking hate people and especially the useless cops that basically called me a nerd and to grow up. Blah.

When the Rocketeer loudly exclaimed to no one,"Hope I'm not late for the race!" I was filled with dread. Moments later my fears were confirmed.
I rented this game as a kid - 5 mins later I was playing super mario kart, which I had owned for months.

The top/bottom screen problem makes me feel like this game was designed for other people to watch people play it and get frustrated.

Most Movie games back then were basically just a bunch of mini games.
May not be read but the control scheme makes sense.The control scheme mimics modern aircraft games with multi axial inputs. up and down are reversed as when you pull the yoke or stick. Shoulder buttons are the rudder where left foot is left rudder and vice versa. left and right for left and right roll. The displays should be reversed though with miniature map on top.

Actually the more you play it the more I want that tiny 3D window to be the real game, like some Mode7 action. It sounds like a DOS game and it turns out it was ported from that. Definitely falls into the early "cinematic" games on 16-bit hardware platforms, rich graphics but not a lot of levels and stiff gameplay.

Ok....I had to look this up after Mike had to do the race AGAIN after winning. Apparently, the developers of this game were mainly a flight simulator developer and they were asked to make a game based on the Rocketeer....and this is the best they could do.
It sounded like Mike was about to rip the controller apart on the level he won.
You guys have to use the tiny screen in the lower center to align yourself with the track. How'd you not notice it?
Guys, come on...Yes, this is an awful game, but the flying levels are quite simple. NEVER look at the top screen. You're playing on the bottom screen, and that's it! Keep your altitude up, turn in to the curves (and stop bothering with the L and R buttons) and it'll be over. It said in the beginning that you have to win two races.

"Here's the thing, we might be doing this wrong." As James just holds down the button to bank a turn....the entire time. **facepalm**
me and my friend called this the thumb practice game, really made my thumb numb from all that tapping the shoot button.
People who play this game just want to be the Rocketeer, and instead they have to do an airplane race, and then they have to do the exact same race with the same opponents on the same track again, and then they get to be the Rocketeer and it's god awful, and finally they have to do _the exact same airplane race a third time but your plane is reskinned as a Rocketeer._ This is so bad it's hilarious, it's like a prank game you give to someone who likes The Rocketeer.
So this also came out for DOS around the same time. You needed a joystick for this part on the PC, which was a giant pain in the ass. The PC version came with a game version of an E6B flight computer that pilots would manually use to calculate distance/speed/time, etc. In order to play the game, you would have to adjust the E6B to the correct settings and then input the correct code required to answer the question presented to you. If you lost that thing, you were fucked. Never got past the racing portion. It was the most frustrating thing ever as a kid.
