The Ladybug port suffers too much from system limitations. The revolving doors look just like the fixed walls. (In the original, the doors were a different color and even had a visible center "post" that they revolved around.) The flicker is pretty bad. And if it couldn't better copy the original's clock, it should have done something a bit less faithful, but more clear while being less visually distracting.
These are always MY FAVORITE episodes of JMM. Them just shooting the shit playing random Atari/Coleco games. Which is kinda funny because 2600 and Coleco aren't even my favorite consoles. Just something about the episodes feeling like sitting around with friends playing random games. Keep up the good work guys
Ultra SCSIcide isn't simulating guitar hero, it's simulating a hard drive read head. The 8 tracks are the 8 bits that you have to read in the correct color order on the hard drive platter. It's basically fast food with more complex color matching. Instead of avoiding purple pickles you're avoiding bits that are the wrong color.
I don't know why, but I love the atari 2600. It has a unique thing to me, its charm or something. I really loved this video, i'd even want more. Keep our mondays awesome you two.
The Zelda Hack is Tutankhamen. They just reskinned stuff; the map layout, item placement, enemy AI is completely the same, right down to where enemies get stuck.
Shawn P. It's honestly because the name was too long. Tutankhamun was just too long to fit. I guess the logo they made had the text too large so they omitted the letters? Or the font and size in the attract mode only works by calling it Tutankham?
The Lady Bug multipliers work according to the color. You need to collect the hearts as long as they are blue if you want the score multiplier to rise. The letters need to be collected in yellow or red, depending on which word you want to spell out (EXTRA or SPECIAL, see the words on the top of the screen). If you spell out Special, you get to play a bonus level. Extra gives you an extra life and lets you skip one level ahead. The vegetable in the Bug hideout freezes all bugs for a few seconds.
Is that the refresh rate or capture stuff that makes Ladybug flicker like that? Secret Quest pretty much is Zelda on the 2600. They should of just made a hack/mod of that. Its still cool to have any new stuff for the 2600.
Harry Warburg .. True, but modern tools have made it a little easier for programmers today. Also they don't have the memory limits that the programmers of the past had.
The flickering probably has to do with the tricks required to show that many sprites on the screen, much like with the NES. Lots of Atari games had flicker like that.
rifter rifter ... True, I noticed this during my latest stream of Zelda on NES... the later levels seem to be choppy due to the amount of enemies on the screen!
That motion control looks like it works about as well as the Power Glove too! Wouldn't it such for Nintendo if the Atari Per Glove actually worked better than theirs lol
I'm guessing 1 or more 'tilt sensors.' A ball bearing rolls between sets of contacts depending on the orientation of the sensor. It would make sense if there are two sensors, one for each axis, and the bearing is stuck on the X-axis sensor in James' controller, which is why his character can only intentionally travel up and down.
Hi, It is kontaktron switch and magnet on swing, unfortunately I forgot to cut one track on pcb and I realized this few months after shipment;P I’m shock that this even work like that. Only 2 paris of this was made... I have the working ones;D
Zelda on Atari = Rom hack of Tutankhamen. Ultra fast enemies, no shooting up or sown, only left or right, and poor handling going around corners. Still I`ll give the programmer credit for the sprites at least looking like original enemies and treasures resembling classic LOZ items. :-)
You know what I've always been waiting for? Something very SIMPLE & EASY to make! I wish someone can make a hack of the original Legend of Zelda but with the ability to move in eight directions like all the other top view Zelda games!
Hard to believe that the 2600 was able to do anything considering its specs. For example, it only had 128 BYTES (yes, bytes) of memory. It also had no real "video memory". Basically the programmer was responsible for changing the data to be displayed as the video beam moved around the screen. The programmer did 99% of the work. While this is certainly a limitation, it also allowed the 2600 to last for quite a while, as programmers became more familiar with the hardware and learned to stretch its capabilities. Some of the games that have been released in the last 10 or 12 years (home brews) for it are very impressive.
if Atari didnt show how much the Home Console Market could originally bloom, we wouldnt have Home Consoles, therefore we never would've had the Genesis or Nintendo, etc.
I was making a play on the "Genesis does what ninten-don't" commercials that used to air, given that Mike found the Genesis control pad preferable to the Atari joystick. It's a bad pun. No need for a crusade.
Not sure if you read it in a previous comment the color of the letters or heart will determine wa happens the hearts when are blue you get the multiplier the letters in red or yellow will be used to spell out extra or special both advance the level one gives more lives The zelda is a rom hack of tutankham Also love your guys shows been watching from your hummble beginings
I thought Crazy Balloon was an original game, but it seems it's a 1980 Taito arcade game. I'd love to see it on other 8-bit systems though, like Apple II, C64 or the ZX Spectrum. EDIT: It's on the Speccy afterall. Gotta check it out.
Apparently Crazy Balloon was an obscure arcade game by Taito. I just looked it up. Imagine how many quarters that monster would've eaten! Though it definitely makes for an awesome 2600 game!
For the hardware timeline, this was pretty damned advanced. Why couldn't Atari do this?! I mean they were heavily mired by then in corporate culture and all, but they seriously underestimated their own tech.
I played ladybug on cole co vision and mastered it. The secret behind the letters is to eat them when they are the correct color to spell "special" and "extra" extra earns you an extra life, and special earns you a bonus level. The hearts are score multipliers and should be eaten when blue.
The arcade version of Lady bug is a blast! That looks lkke a very decent port. The vegetables in the corner are the item that appears when all the bugs are out of their spawn.
Which Atari? 1. Atari Inc. founded in 1972, defunct 1984 2. Atari Corp. founded 1984, defunct 1996 3. Atari, SA. formerly known as Infrogames, founded in 1993 as GT Interactive, renamed Infrogames, acquired Atari Inc. in 2008 and made Atari it as a subsidiary to Infrogames Entertainment. Parent Infrogrames renamed to Atari, SA in 2009.
I recently got a 4 switch 2600. The controller works very well for being almost 40 years old. It doesn't hurt my hand to play games with it. I always thought the 2600 controllers were unbreakable.
The carrot is the bonus you collect when all the enemies come out from the middle. Each stage has a different vegetable, and the points get higher as you progress.
Legend Of Zelda is just a graphics hack of Tutankham. This was originally an arcade port of the same game made by Konami. The arcade scrolled horizontally making the left and right shooting more practical. The 2600 hardware had trouble handling horizontal scrolling. It’s also why Jr. Pac-Man scrolls vertically.
You know what great arcade game I am surprised never got a home port in the 80s? Zoo Keeper from Taito. That is such a fun and simple title, even the 2600 could have done a decent version of it with the racing paddle controller. If you guys like the concept of Crazy Balloon, check out the KuruKuru Kurin games on the GBA. Its about navigating a spinning stick through a tight maze.
I know what you mean about the 2600 joysticks hurting your hand .. back in the day my palm would get sore and even swollen after hours of of play .. cheers guys!!
It's so ironic that in the past we watch Back to the Future and longed to be in the year 2020 or whatever it was, now I dream of travelling back to 1980s and visiting the arcades! (or should i say revisiting lol)
You might like to Look into the Kururin-Series, it is a Puzzle Game similar to Crazy Balloon for GBA and gamecube only released in Europe, Australia and Japan, but it is also in vitual console. It is kind of my "hidden gem" of gaming!
Well, I've also played MS. Pac Man for the 2600, that port is WAY better than Pac Man's, presumably because they spent more than six weeks on it. But damage had already been done by then v_v.
I'm sure it's been said before but it bears repeating, that Zelda game is just a hack of Tutankhamen. A game made by Konami and reworked for the 2600 by Parker Brothers. It looks like they only changed the sprites.
Those that had a rather large 2600 library know that the Zelda homebrew is just Tutankham with altered icons. It's still the same game play. It's like Doki Doki Panic becoming Super Mario Bros 2.
What's so weird is that I vaguely remember getting a copy of Ladybug for the 2600 as a kid. Only, it was defective and had to be returned. Maybe my pre-teen self confused an Intellivision or ColecoVision copy for the console? As that makes far more sense then getting a game...that probably did not exist.
Don't know if you mention it, but the letters change color as you can either spell EXTRA (for extra life) or SPECIAL, which sends you to a screen where bonus fruits and vegetables pop up (with no bugs to kill you) so you can rack up a lot of points. I would have to say that the ColecoVision version was quite close to the appearance of the actual arcade game... _this one?_ ... not so much. 4:13 the carrot is the special fruit or vegetable that is in the insect pen when all 4 come out (kind of like the pretzel or cherry in PAC MAN).
Follow Mike on Twitch www.twitch.tv/mikemateilive
Cinemassacre lmao awesome content guys
+Cinemassacre I love you James, hope you had a great Easter
Cinemassacre Awesome video :))
Confident my ass 🤣
Cinemassacre James making Mike bring home the bacon!!!
21:39 Mike's guttural scream at the end of Crazy Balloon is so visceral. Pure, unfiltered reaction there. 😂
I'm working on programming Zelda for the GBA in 3D! its cool to see it on the Atari.
Please find some way to update us about it. I would really like to see it.
Give me a link to buy a copy.
3DSage hope that turns out great!
3DSage 👏👏👏👏👏👏
SHHHHHHHH. Quiet before Reggie hears...
Well I gotta give the Polish dude credit, watching Mike it's clear his motion control thing worked a heck of a lot better than the Power Glove lol
Zelda is just a reskin of Tutankhamun, they fixed none of the games problems
Can confirm.
Yep sure is
Its Entombed for 2600 not Tutankhamun!
Good call dude
They made a Zelda for Atari 2600. It's not called Zelda its Anguna. It was made much later then that one
the ladybug game looks more engaging than pacman.
They released it on the Coleco Visoin. It is pretty good.
The Ladybug port suffers too much from system limitations. The revolving doors look just like the fixed walls. And if it couldn't better copy the original's clock, it should have done something a bit less faithful, but more clear while being less visually distracting.
I have the ColecoVision version. Ladybug is a fun game.
I bought it on ColecoVision and it is.
it's. more enganging because all the stages kinda tricked you, w
Crazy Balloon looks like a really nice game!
Arkadiusz Podsada agreed
zelda is Tutankhamen with custom items the game play, sound, pallet remains unchanged -very poor
Was going to say this :)
Yea already said too but didn't see comment..
its pretty much the exact same thing. king tut was actually one of the better 2600 titles imo
i hate poorly made hacks, but i guess they have to exist so that the best ones can shine bright.
Such a fun game, Link wasn't necessary
These are always MY FAVORITE episodes of JMM. Them just shooting the shit playing random Atari/Coleco games. Which is kinda funny because 2600 and Coleco aren't even my favorite consoles. Just something about the episodes feeling like sitting around with friends playing random games. Keep up the good work guys
21:24 The most painful video game death in Mike's entire life.
That scream was so visceral. It was amazing.
They were so close to guiding that yoyo looking thing to the end of the level.
I got a trojan commercial
😂🤣
Can't wait for AVGN vs Mike: The Game: The Movie
I can't wait for the LJN game based on that movie XD
Coming soon exclusively on Colonelflix on the KFConsole
can't waint for Shawn and Matt destruction team up with james and mike.

Absolutely love seeing things like this. The effort and love to original games and consoles! 😍
I don't know why, but I love the atari 2600. It has a unique thing to me, its charm or something. I really loved this video, i'd even want more. Keep our mondays awesome you two.
You don't see that flicker when you're actually playing Ladybug. It's something to do with the capture card, likely.
The game is running at 60fps (240p) but the youtube video is 30fps.
"I'm playing, doing it with one hand."
- Mike Matei 2018
How can he play with himself with one hand? That Elephant Penis is too big for a normal hand.
@@conversationtosaurusrex 🤣😂
The Zelda Hack is Tutankhamen. They just reskinned stuff; the map layout, item placement, enemy AI is completely the same, right down to where enemies get stuck.

You guys HAVE to play Crazy Balloon for a James and Mike Monday! James was killing it! It looks so fun and intense
The Lady Bug multipliers work according to the color. You need to collect the hearts as long as they are blue if you want the score multiplier to rise. Watching this Zelda game on the Atari really makes me appreciate the fact the 1986 originally Zelda is on the Nintendo entertainment system.
The original is on the Famicom floppy disk system with extra audio capabilities and interactive karaoke microphone
Agreed, cool that folks are still making Atari 2600 games. I got a copy of the Mario 3 Mix game coming in the mail here soon. That one looked great.
Zelda for Atari is litterally Tutankhamen for the Atari, you can look it up it’s the same game
It was an honor meeting you last week!!!!I still can't believe you didn't charge for a picture or an autograph. Still bought your Merch :)
James, been watching you since waaaaay back in the day (Angry Nintendo Nerd). Just wanted to say you do awesome work. Keep it up!
Zelda is pretty much konamis tutankham untouched almost..thats a horseshit hack!..pretty much a resticker
Worst than the Zelda CD-I games.
The CD-I Zelda games are at least entertaining one way or the other.
A James and Mike video on my birthday? Hell yeah!
It's amazing to see AVGN in his natural non angry state.
Good work guys. I really love these videos.
David Carter
It’s not AVGN , It’s the main actor and writer for that series
Nativ Safra No shit TIPS.
Is that the refresh rate or capture stuff that makes Ladybug flicker like that? Secret Quest pretty much is Zelda on the 2600. They should of just made a hack/mod of that. Its still cool to have any new stuff for the 2600.
you are right! Secret quest or even Adventure would make a better Zelda than a hack of Tutankham!
Harry Warburg .. True, but modern tools have made it a little easier for programmers today. Also they don't have the memory limits that the programmers of the past had.
Harry Warburg.. Oh ya! The time constraints given back then were not realistic in most cases (ex.. ET)

I would love to know what is inside those 'motion' controllers.
Love
@yadadub - Yeah, this is what I thought as well. Something simple that would have been possible back when the console was new.
Hi,
It is kontaktron switch and magnet on swing, unfortunately I forgot to cut one track on pcb and I realized this few months after shipment;P I’m shock that this even work like that. Only 2 paris of this was made... I have the working ones;D
Can we get a gif of James swaying like the crazy balloon? xD
that scream with crazy balloon x'D
Zelda on Atari = Rom hack of Tutankhamen. Ultra fast enemies, no shooting up or sown, only left or right, and poor handling going around corners. Still I`ll give the programmer credit for the sprites at least looking like original enemies and treasures resembling classic LOZ items. :-)
You always have such cool hacks thanks for sharing with all of us :)
1 Coin Only I have you on fb
AVGN didn't enjoy the Crazy Balloon one as much as James when reviewing Taito titles.
You know what I've always been waiting for? Something very SIMPLE & EASY to make! I wish someone can make a hack of the original Legend of Zelda but with the ability to move in eight directions like all the other top view Zelda games!

Ladybug was ported to the Colecovision, was my mom's favorite game...

zelda
Thank you!!
GenesIS what AtarISN'T
(My degree is in music, not marketing.)

I don’t think it’s a crusade.
“Genes is what Atar isn’t” If you actually spaced it, it wouldn’t make much sense. XD
Not sure if you read it in a previous comment the color of the letters or heart will determine wa happens the hearts when are blue you get the multiplier the letters in red or yellow will be used to spell out extra or special both advance the level one gives more lives
The zelda is a rom hack of tutankham
Also love your guys shows been watching from your hummble beginings
Anguna on the 2600 is a really good Zelda style game. You guys should also check out zippy the porcupine, its sonic on the 2600.
The dentist's office I used to go to as a kid had that Lady Bug game. That bit of music at the beginning just made me feel so nostalgic lol
I thought Crazy Balloon was an original game, but it seems it's a 1980 Taito arcade game. I'd love to see it on other 8-bit systems though, like Apple II, C64 or the ZX Spectrum.
EDIT: It's on the Speccy afterall. Gotta check it out.
Actually reminded me of "Kuru Kuru Kururin" only harder as Crazy Balloon is one-hit deaths. Nice find.
Yup seems it's on C64 too and even on the PET. They're just all different profiles on Mobygames - my initial googling only showed the Speccy one.
it will be released on switch for $80
Apparently Crazy Balloon was an obscure arcade game by Taito. I just looked it up. Imagine how many quarters that monster would've eaten! Though it definitely makes for an awesome 2600 game!
Have you guys checked out galligan, draconian, fix the donkey Kong, zippy the Sonic clone, etc.
Zelda hack is pretty interesting. If you want a top down game that is also in the familiar style you should definitely check out Secret Quest
OMG CRAZY BALLOON IS BEYOND EPIC!
For the hardware timeline, this was pretty damned advanced. Why couldn't Atari do this?! I mean they were heavily mired by then in corporate culture and all, but they seriously underestimated their own tech.
Crazy that some homebrew developers have higher QA standards than some modern AAA games
I played ladybug on cole co vision and mastered it. The secret behind the letters is to eat them when they are the correct color to spell "special" and "extra" extra earns you an extra life, and special earns you a bonus level. The hearts are score multipliers and should be eaten when blue.
That Crazy Balloon game looks super cool! I think that game would have been legendary back in the day
The arcade version of Lady bug is a blast! That looks lkke a very decent port.
The vegetables in the corner are the item that appears when all the bugs are out of their spawn.
You could've told me that AVGN vs MIKE was actually Spy vs Spy... but I respect the sentiment & the cart art!
It must be Zelda Breath of the Wild for Atari because the sword kept breaking.
That Nerd v Mike is like Spy v Spy.
The channel gets better each day, keep up the good work
Power Strap for Atari 2600 is a shitty version of Power Glove for NES!
I think Atari predicted an asteroid that will end the world through their game Asteroids. Investigate Atari.
Our Founding Liars look into it
Our Founding Liars waste of breath
Steven Glansburg False.
atari is an anagram for A-I RAT
Which Atari?

2. Atari Corp. founded 1984, defunct 1996
3. Atari, SA. formerly known as Infrogames, founded in 1993 as GT Interactive, renamed Infrogames, acquired Atari Inc. in 2008 and made Atari it as a subsidiary to Infrogames Entertainment. Parent Infrogrames renamed to Atari, SA in 2009.
Atari's still living in my heart
forever...ever
The Zelda hack is originally Tutankham on Atari.

This was originally an arcade port of the same game made by Konami. The arcade scrolled horizontally making the left and right shooting more practical. The 2600 hardware had trouble handling horizontal scrolling. It’s also why Jr. Pac-Man scrolls vertically.
I hella laughed out loud when Crazy Balloon cut to an It background! Nice one.
Would love to see these guys play Medievil on PS1. Please make it happen!!
I miss AVGN
What do you mean? It never left
Glenn Fales I need new AVGN episode
He's a busy man now. He has a wife and two kids plus he's in his 30's almost 40's so he doesn't have much time with it as he use to.
It's probably coming soon.
+Mary Anne same here! :(
You know what great arcade game I am surprised never got a home port in the 80s? Zoo Keeper from Taito. That is such a fun and simple title, even the 2600 could have done a decent version of it with the racing paddle controller.
If you guys like the concept of Crazy Balloon, check out the KuruKuru Kurin games on the GBA. Its about navigating a spinning stick through a tight maze.

E'ry day, all day!
Love these home home brews. That Mario game is amazing.
An actual ladybug landed on me like 2 seconds after you said you guys were going to play that game lol
The balloon game looks legitimately good and challenging.
You should play nes zapper games in James and Mike mondays!
I know what you mean about the 2600 joysticks hurting your hand .. back in the day my palm would get sore and even swollen after hours of of play .. cheers guys!!
You should try Halo 2600. It’s actually pretty fun for a homebrew.
Can’t wait for the HD remaster of this Zelda game on the Atari VCS.
Why does a 1988 Nintendo version look better than a 2006 version on Atari?
Funny to see you playing and commenting Atari 2600 hacks. Why don´t you play some commodore 64 games for Mondays!!!
Hey guys! Try playing Battlekid for the NES. I would love to see that
We might have reached peak Mike: Zelda on the atari 2600! :^
Edit: and then you get Mike in a game at the end! XD
when someone will put a Metroid game in Atari2600?
... maybe ... NEVER BECAUSE THERE IS ONY ONE BUTRNNS YU 12 YEER OLLLLLLD
Jk. I dont know but it would be very limited to just attack and move
maybe something like this 'atari zelda', but with better controls I think.
Only Sprybug could do it, we should send to him petition
Lack of RAM is a b*tch
It's so ironic that in the past we watch Back to the Future and longed to be in the year 2020 or whatever it was, now I dream of travelling back to 1980s and visiting the arcades! (or should i say revisiting lol)
As if you aren't busy enough... But if you made a new series about you two playing hacks I'd absolutely watch every episode
You were very calm in this video and that's very surprising knowing you and how is no one confused about that
You might like to Look into the Kururin-Series, it is a Puzzle Game similar to Crazy Balloon for GBA and gamecube only released in Europe, Australia and Japan, but it is also in vitual console. It is kind of my "hidden gem" of gaming!
That zelda game is not a homebrew, guys. It's just a hack of Tutankham. Not comparable to the mario game, etc.
Well, I've also played MS. Pac Man for the 2600, that port is WAY better than Pac Man's, presumably because they spent more than six weeks on it. But damage had already been done by then v_v.
My favorite was Pac Man Jr.
Crazy Balloon is a fan-made conversion of a Taito arcade game, for those who don't know.
I'm sure it's been said before but it bears repeating, that Zelda game is just a hack of Tutankhamen. A game made by Konami and reworked for the 2600 by Parker Brothers. It looks like they only changed the sprites.
Fuck! That ending to Crazy Balloon made me yell hard enough that my dad had to check to see if I was okay !
I'm working on a special Zelda fangame right now... I hope that you'll like it when it eventually gets finished!
zelda is just a king tutenkamen clone
I loved Lady Bug on my Coleco (Still have it).
My all time favorite on Coleco was the Mr. Do games.
I had Lady Bug on Coleco Vision when I was little. That and Mouse Trap were my favorite Pac Man clones
Go fish, wolfenstein, and reindeer rescue are my favorite Atari homebrews.
